  • Garage Build Finally Done - First 18 holes on TCG 2019 completed today!

I've gotta give a shout out to this site and the many members that unknowingly helped me as I lurked this site for a couple of months while I was putting this together. My initial plans were building around a Skytrak, but in the end I jumped for a Uneekor QED. That LM is amazing, especially when it comes to putting / short game and for training / game improvement.

The sim is in the back of my side ('boat') garage that is physically attached to the house, but there is no entrance from the house. The garage is about 33' deep and 14' wide with 10' foot ceilings. I was contemplating a radar LM in the beginning, but I have too much stuff in there to eat up 2/3 or more of the space for the sim area. I ended up putting the sim area at the back - it's 12' wide and 14' deep. The screen is about 10" off the wall, so the actual depth is ~13' deep.

As the floor is pretty sloped (about 1" over the 12' width), I had to come up with a way to level the hitting mat. I didn't want anything permanent, so I came up with an idea after beating my head against the wall for about week . I built a frame from 2x4's that is the same size as the 5'x4' fiberbuilt mat and then lined it with some thick plastic I had laying around. I used about 3 bags of self leveling concrete to fill it along with some rebar (the thin stuff used for block walls). I filled the concrete enough so that I had a bit of concrete all the way up to the front. It really worked out well, and after removing the frame and the plastic, it sits on the floor perfectly level.

As the QED was a last minute change, and the putting / short game is great with it, I needed a way to be able to putt in there. I ended up modifying the stance mat by cutting a 6" strip out and inlaying some wood and some left over putting grass I had laying around from a recent putting green project in the back yard. It really worked out well and putting from there is great. Not as great as the floors many have that are level and have the hitting mats sunk in, ect, but this works for now.

My wife wasn't going to be left out of the build, which was good because the area definitely has a touch to it that I wouldn't have matched as I'm just wanting to hitting balls . I knew I was looking at 10-12 weeks from the time I ordered the Skytrak and that gave me plenty of time to really do the room right. If I could have ordered one and got it a week later, I would have never put the time, energy and effort into the sim required to get it where it is now. I'm glad it worked out that way, TBH.

The screen is the preferred from Carl's Place and is 10'x10'. I used Uni-strut and tarp clamps to hang it up. The black side and ceiling walls are just 4x8 sheets of sound board from HD painted black. I put that up for looks and screen contrast and it's pretty soft from a golf ball impact perspective. There is a good bit of golf netting used to create some baffles across the top of the screen to catch lob wedges and some side baffles. It was a bit of a pain to cut as I had to singe the cuts with a torch so that the material didn't fall apart, but it worked really well.

The flooring is just the cheap carpet from HD - I think it was about 50 cents a square foot or so. Under that is the interlocking foam/rubber flooring tiles. If you go that route, they're way cheaper at Harbor Freight - I think we paid about $75 for the whole area. The TV on the wall by the screen is a cheap $40 TV my wife found on FB marketplace - I just wanted something there to leave the Ignite software running on for the club and ball data. The TV over the entrance to the room is another $40 tv I got a garage sale a while back that we weren't using. It's connected to an old Roku I had laying around so I can have my NFL games on while I'm playing around

If you don't have or haven't seen the black box with the large buttons on it before on the back side of the hitting mat, it's the best thing since sliced bread for playing TCG 19'. It's basically a nice wood box with large yellow buttons on it that has a small pcb in it that is a keyboard / joystick emulator. You map your keyboard keys to the buttons on there and never have to walk over to the keyboard. I bought it on Ebay when I was searching for QED related 'stuff' there recently. I saw it, and having never played TCG 19' before but seeing video's of people doing it and needing the keyboard fairly handy, I thought...this is a no brainer! I just played my first 18 holes on TGC and I had to find the mouse one time because the drop button didn't work. Didn't figure out why, but I had a few drops after and had no issues.

Thanks for your time! Any questions, comments or ideas for improvement are more than welcome!

That's a great looking sim area! Nice job! Very creative with the leveling of the stance mat. Also, great job on going with the QED - that's an investment with a great return as it seems like such a great LM.

Any suggestion on how to check the level of a garage floor? And subsequently address like you did?

I just started with a 4' foot level. I placed it on the mat and saw it was pretty unlevel. I also have trim board at the base of the sheet rock on the walls which starts at the concrete at the far rear of the garage where the sim is and within a couple of feet, you can clearly see the floor moving down away from the trim board.

With the level alone, I would have just had to trial and error (guess) until I got the mat lifted enough to get it level and then calculate the slope from there. Having that trim board on the wall (which is level) made it really easy for me to measure the gap between the floor and the trim board where the sim area stopped.

I used self leveling concrete to get the mat level - so in the end, trying to figure out the slope didn't really matter. That concrete isn't cheap (it's about $35/bag) but it flows well and is dead level and smooth when it dries. It's actually almost too smooth. I had an issue initially where the mat would slightly move around on it after hitting quite a bit. It didn't move much, maybe 1/4" one way or the other. I took the mat off and sprayed some rubber bed liner spray on it and then put the mat back down. It hasn't moved since

Nice build! Did you follow this chart on the QED install for placement distance? 10’-12’ from screen? Click image for larger version Name:	1A6BAFE0-DDA7-4EDA-B461-B4BF9690868D.jpeg Views:	0 Size:	59.1 KB ID:	299361

Thanks! Na, originally that was steering me away from QED (as was the price - I really only budgeted initially for the Skytrak). There were a couple of posts on the site here about this and because it's camera based, you really only need enough room for the ball to fly through that blue cone in the pic and still have enough room to swing. I'm about 6'4" and this space is about as small as I can go. My driver swing is probably a foot short of the back wall and a foot short of the screen enclosure. It seems that Uneekor's documentation for the minimum space is more of a CYA for safety (bounce-back from the screen). It's pretty easy to really minimize bounce-back using something behind the screen. I have a comforter hanging behind it and some homemade insulation baffles behind the screen at the bottom.

      Nice space!

You said TGC but the photo is showing E6 on the screen. Did you get both?

Do you happen to have a link handy to the control box? I've been thinking more about those lately.

Hey 3on3putt! Thank you! Yeah, I ordered TCG last Friday but didn't get the key until early yesterday morning. When I hung the QED late last week I wanted something to check out, so I grabbed the E6 demo as I thought the base software for the QED would have at least a full screen driving range or something, but the only range is a smaller area of the application and the shot tracer wasn't visible on the projector. It's still useful for practice, I just find that I have to change the range view to overhead. E6 is just way too much money IMO. I can (and probably will) upgrade to the QED Succeed package for practice and that along with TCG is still less than the first payment to E6.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post links, but we'll give it a try here If the link gets removed, search ebay for 'TGC 2019 Controller, Uneekor, Trackman, Skytrac and other simulators'

Very clever indeed. I would like to have a pcb box like that for mulligans and replays.

Here's a link that I posted in the comment above - yeah, having the scout and flyover right there along with club and direction changes is really nice. The sheet that the seller sends with the instructions for button mapping didn't really work out for me, but it's fairly trivial to change the button mappings in the application that talks to the board. I also didn't really follow his instructions for the software install. I download the app directly from the site that developed it, installed it in Win 10 and was off to the races. The quality of the unit is really quite good IMHO, especially for the price.

Thanks! Couldn't agree more on the LM - I really wanted something that I could work on my technique as much as play golf. The Skytrak would never have given me the capability that the QED does. On some shots I'm thinking....'huh?' when I see the ball flight, but having the video of the club through impact shows me that I'm not very consistent with center of face contact. I never would have thought that would impact flight as much as it does (and I still question some of the reads) but in reality, I have basically the same flight patterns and inconsistency at the range IRL. Also, the short game on the QED is really off-the-hook accurate including the putting. When you push or pull the putt, you can see it in real-time video in the QED Ignite app on the TV screen, so you can really never say 'misread' on that

Nice build! I am set to begin my similar build this weekend, and the only problem I had not yet solved was how to hang my 9.5’ x 9.5’ Carl’s preferred screen. How do you secure the tarp clamps to the units rut and screen? Thanks!

Probably the most popular way to hang a screen is with tarp clips and ball bungees. The ball bungee loops around the enclosure and threads through the tarp clip, which is secured to the screen. It helps create enough tension for a smooth image but also allows enough give to deaden the ball on impact. You can find them at Home Depot or most any hardware store but they look like this = https://www.acehardware.com/departme...E&gclsrc=aw.ds

Thanks! When I was figuring out what I was going to do with the screen, I was first looking at GungHoGolf 's site - this guy really has some GREAT articles on his site. He has a method for doing one here with a great step-by-step and pics:

        https://gunghogolf.com/articles/diy-...reen-enclosure

I basically combined that with a video I saw on youtube where another guy had used uni-strut in his garage. I took GungHo's idea with the tarp clips and the bungee balls and just used uni-strut for the frame rather than the EMT frame as my floor is so sloped that it was just easier to use a longer strut angle mount to keep the left side of the screen frame level with the right side. I'm sure cutting the EMT properly would also net the same result
