What position do you it the ball from, do you hit the ball from the same position for every club, or do you move it towards the front sensor for driver and towards the rear for low irons etc

Im finding so many innaccuracies with the turf top its unreal. I cant believe more people didnt flag up issues during the testing phase when we doing the guidelines

Im finding if I hit every club from the same spot, which is the spot marked by the tee on the original turf top, and also the the inserted tee on the monster top, with no lighting on other than projector reflection, then all irons read the same with monster top and they do stock, ie no difference between the 2... this is a good thing lol

However, if I hit driver using same height tee, from same position on stock and then on monster the swing speed is probably on average.

Even stranger is if I then mover the teeing position closer to the front sensor on the monster top (obviously cant do this on stock top) then i can make the swing speed reading climb.

Im assuming this is because the follow through is then closer to the front sensor than it would be if hitting from tee position further back.

As much as its a joy to hit from, its creates a hell of a lot of variables

Hey John, I.hit about almost center between the sensors ( an inch towards the center from the original tee. I tried hitting closer to the front sensor but it didnt do anything different to my speed or clubface. The good news is DD knew these problems and made the software tweakable.

      Good luck Mate,

      Cheers

Hey guys. Don't know if this will help or not, but here are the two tees I use with my jagmanjoe thick turf. I took 2 normal tees and cut them down. I then sharpened the bottom so they would go in to the turf without issue. As you can see, they measure around 1 & 3/4 inches. It's possible the stars just aligned on my lighting, but you can see in my videos that I get very consistent swing speeds. I've also included a pic of the ball tee'd up on the turf to show it in relation to the club head. I tee it up higher than this in real life, but it hasn't bothered me so far. It might be a different story if I was using a real ball, as it might feel "thin" when making contact.

Hey Vinny, can you select driver and hit a 3 wood off the deck and see what happens ? I find the lower I get the more speed it reads . Driver teed up " normal" I maxxx out at 85 mph and if I hit a 3wood off the deck get a maxxx speed of about 104. Good luck bud and stay away from the unplayables 😂

That's definitely odd. I'll test that out and see what I get.

Hey guys! So your readings are very strange. I have the thick 3/4" Thick Monster Tee Turf. See pick attached. I don't have any problems with speeds decreasing with driver. I tee up with a 2 3/4" plastic tee. I don't get slower speeds if I tee it higher.

I have a CFL bulb very high up on the ceiling shining down. This setup works perfect and never get slow readings. I place my ball in the center where tee goes all the time. This is where you are supposed to be hitting. I wouldn't place it anywhere else, because that's where Optishot designed their system to be hit from.

Since we all have thick turf, I think the problem is lighting and direction of lighting. I see Maxxx has a lamp very low and shining down at an angle to the censors. Not sure if this is creating shadows or the close direct light interferes in some way. But like I said, mine is on the ceiling above shining down and perfect with no issues on speeds.

Also another possibility. Make sure your thick turf is cut out very large and provides a lot of space around the censors. What you don't want is it being restrictive and maybe interfere with the sensors.

Maxxx, are you hitting "Foam Ball". I think I saw that in your video. What happens if you change it to Real Ball? (Even if you can't hit a real ball and only foam, try swing on Real Ball setting while hitting foam ball. Curious if you see better speeds.

Bottom line: Don't think you need to worry about teeing it super low or moving the ball position. Test your lighting. I'm sure its lighting and/or the cut out sizes around the sensors. See if you can get a CFL bulb high above you and see what the results are.

Also my picture showing the lighting, I only have one on while playing. I don't have all the lights on as shown in the picture.

                Mike

My turf top is way thicker than yours. I'll take some pictures today but thinks it's more like 1" 3/8

It's the jagmanjoe one. It's so deep it creates a tunnelling effect around the sensors which I think is part of the problem

The other is it's just too thick. During the club settings testing I proved with Aurin that raising tee height very very high causes issues with swing speed readings.

Lighting I don't think is the issue as is exactly the same as when I was hitting stock turf, and had no issue what so ever.

Heres the link of what ive got, as you can see it seriously raises the height above the sensors.

                http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1515438526...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

However I must admit with a bit of tinkering I have got it to read the irons OK most of the time now, however unless I push the tee right in so its just above the turf I do get some crazy driver readings.

                Vinny,

I think me and you have the same product, I notice you are hitting as bit forward of the original teeing spot (i.e about an inch closer to the front sensor than the standard position.

Do you play all your shots from that spot?

Also did you mark the spot with anything,if so what?

Finally do you push the tee is so it pushed into the rubber at the base of the turf or just have it sit in the "grass" part

Could you post an over head angular shot of your sensors, same sort of angle as mike posted of his just so I can see the difference and how it compares with mine.?

Ill keep playing with it, sure ill find a way to get it reading right

Thanks for your input boys, Mike,I have tried all sorts of lighting at the beginning when I had only the stock turf. After much testing I found that the low spotlights with cfl bulbs work best for me my buddies. Also I don't want the whole room lit up as the courses look much better without much light in the room.So with my old setup with stock turf I was getting faster than normal swing speeds for me (105 -110 with driver and 75 with SW)when I hit irons or teed up a driver. The day I installed the thick stuff, I lost about 10% CHS with irons and with a Driver teed up I need to boost it 28% to achieve normal speeds ! I
The only way for me to get somewhat close to real speed is if I hit a driver or a 3 wood right off my turf. This sucks as I would much rather tee it up and practice hitting my driver.

Good idea with the real ball setting . I did it before and I reduced the distance to get realistic results. Not sure how much but I will try it out and see later if I can.
I'll take a few pics of my cutouts and turf as well.

                  Cheers boys

                  I will

Yeah, I'll take some more pictures this afternoon when I get home from work. I play the ball in the middle and even just slightly forward of middle on my mat. I just don't like hitting the ball that close to the back sensor for fear of damaging it. I've never noticed a difference in swing speed however as far as where the ball is tee'd up, but I'll double check that as well. I don't mark anywhere, there is just somewhat of a depression in the turf from hitting from that same spot. So the ball just naturally finds that spot when I roll it around on the turf. I don't believe my tee makes it all the way to the rubber, but I'll make note of that as well this afternoon. I've never had any issues with irons that you are mentioning, so not sure what could be causing that. The only irons I tape are my wedges. I too initially bumped the speed up on my irons, but now the only thing I boost are my wedges as well. I was actually starting to notice all my iron distances were long, so I lowered them back down to 100.

I moved the teeing position forward as you described and remarkably all is now good. In fact I did have to reduce the % down on my irons by 5%, other than my PW and GW.

                      Its all very odd,

Below is the email I sent to Joe regarding the outcome of my testing, regarding moving the teeing position forward approx 1" : -
It did increase swing speed reading across all clubs too other than wedges which stayed roughly the same.

In our testing we did prove that increasing height the club passes above the front sensor did reduce swing speed, but only once we got over a certain height.

Im guessing that by teeing forward just that little bit the club is in a lower position on its arc when crossing the front sensor and therefore give a better read, in line with my stock turf

I think it really effects the driver more and the ball is teed up, so ball is the 1 3/8" higher due to your turf plus the extra 2" or whatever the tee is, plus if hitting ball on the up, as you would with the driver the club is a long way away from the front sensor on that swing. I found this decreased swing speed by around 20-25%

Irons however obviously your hitting down so I would imagine but the time the club passes the front sensor its still within the area where swing speeds are not hugely affected, only the 5-10% as indicated by your testers guide

Moving the tee forward obviously moves this arc forward so its closer to the front tee... it think

i did find however that moving the tee forward it obviously mean there was no hole in the urethane, and even if you were to make one the tee would hit the opitshot unit

I think if moving forward you were to modify your design (not syaing you should but if you were to) simply reducing the thickness of the urethane by say 3/8" would probably remove all problems.

It would give the unit a lower profile, so not so much stance platform modification required, and also I think would improve reads, especially on driver.

As it is Im happy with the mod Ive made moving it forward and so will give it a try in the tournament tonight and see how I go.

Thanks very much for your help

Its a weird one really, but think in the email I've described what I think is happening, and as well as the thickness, as we said with Mike, your swing can make a big difference. If flat or hitting down then will obviously be closer to the front sensor on the follow through, if steep and hitting up, will be further away, and if too far away, will get a low speed misread.

Will be giving it a go in my 1st Round at Kiawah tonight so will see how it goes. May not score low, but at least my wrists and optishot will be safe

Hey guys, I tried switching to real ball setting in various conditions with driver teed ,not teed off the deck, three wood and SW.
With the real ball setting I get about 5to10 mph too.much with driver and 5% further than it should with my SW. If I want to get a 98-104 mph swing speed with a foam ball teed up with my turf I need to increase the speed to 128 !!!

My turf is just under 2 inches from the sensors. Here's some pics. I hope this helps someone out.

Maxx, with regards the portion of your video around the 3 minute mark where you changed from real back to foam those were the exact kind of speed under reads I was getting.

You were getting some crazy tempo readings too when hitting foam on real setting.

I think if hitting a foam ball you should stay on the foam ball setting, but I would try just moving the tee position forward, I think it will make a difference.

From your video I think it pretty much shows than when using foam ball on foam setting, if teed up its kills your speed, but if off the deck it works fine.

This is obviously because the club is going to be further above the front sensor when hitting a teed up ball on the up as oppose to hitting it downwards or flatter off the deck.

Blue is the Orignal Tee Position, teed up Driver arc
Purple is the Test Forward Tee Position, teed up Driver arc
Pink is the flatter off the deck arc if hitting from the original position off the deck

Obviously these are just estimates but shows my thinking as to why it may work and gives the results

I really would try just moving the teeing position further forward and see how it goes

I just marked mine with the bottom of a broke off tee pushed in deep, so creates a bit of an indent in the turf, and then can just put the driver tee in the same place, so I hit irons and drive all off the same spot.

I didnt have to alter any of my offsets either which was strange as i would have thought would have made clubs read more open, I think only one it really affected was my gap wedge, which is always a pain anyway for some reason,k and just needed a minor offset adjustment

Ahh just read another of your posts and you said you already hit it forward of original position, that is weird... only thing i have different to you is i have my light points more directly down on the front sensor, rather than angled facing the rear, as i think its the front sensor where the issue is.

I am also using a real ball and real ball setting though, not foam

Hey Guys, got some time so I can chime in here.
I play with the same turf as you John from - jagmanjoe. Been using the same turf for almost a year.

I have built up my platform with 2 layers of OSB - my mat is 4' x 9'. I use real balls too.

Irons and woods are perfect at 100%. I place the ball about an inch before the front sensor (I hit down on the ball).

I have 3 CFL bulbs in a dome fixture directly above the centre of the opti mat, my ceiling is 11' - 8". Room is 15' wide by 20' deep.

I use a movable plastic tee, but still have some mis reads on driver (I think due to the thick turf). Here are some pics:
