  • Online Video Lessons

    Hey Guys

I'm just finalising my Skytrak sim build with a couple of cameras for DTL and FO views as well as incorporating the feeds into Kinovea. This got me thinking about online video lessons.

I am currently a 12hc with the goal of getting down to 5. I have been getting regular lessons but the coach is over an hour away and i've stagnated of late.

My question is has anyone had good results getting from teens into single figures using video lessons and do you have anyone you'd recommend to get them from?

    Thanks

    AL

I have gone from a 20 to a low of a 13 index with online lessons from https://www.shankygolf.co.uk/

these are live lessons over Skype/FaceTime and he has access to my ball/club data. Works awesome!

How does he access your ball/club data live? Do you have a Skype cam and are screen sharing with him or something?

I have two web cams. One face on and one DTL. We have done it a few ways. FSX live works as I just give him the credentials and a swing video comes in on that. We use facetime for DTL usually and FSX Live. One of the times, we used team viewer and he took over my computer so he could setup the conditions and swap views and let me just worry about hitting the ball. That worked really well too. EDIT: When using teamviewer, you can use any software you have, skytrak range, TGC, etc and he sees what you see.

I'll second what Stingreye said. I've taken 2 video lessons with Shanky(Shane) and it helped immensely. Sent him a video of my driver swing and he knew right away what we needed to do to fix it. Using what he taught me I've dropped 9 strokes in the SIM since last season and I'm now hitting the ball way better than I ever have. Most importantly he's a great guy to deal with and the price can't be beat.

Nice feedback for Shanky Golf (possibly the worse name for a golf coaching program ever!).

It's much more cost effective getting these virtual lessons rather than in person. I could get 3-1 at those rates depending on the exchange rate of the day. But do you actually get the same level of effectiveness or growth as opposed to physical lessons?

Very Nice, Inorkuo. Have you seen your hc drop much from this and over what time frame have you had these lessons?

Alwayzlearnin. The first introductory lesson is pretty inexpensive to find out if the format and if Shane is a good match for you. Then if he is, the 6 for 5 lesson pack is what i usually get.

I had my first lesson in July, then August, September, November and January. I don't have a handicap yet. I'm into my 3rd year of trying to learn this game. i have made much better progress with Shane than I did on my own.

Just a quick update on this. I decided to try out this whole virtual lesson thing with Shane (Shanky). Him being in the UK and i'm in Aus I wasn't quite sure how well it would work out. There were a few technical issues that we had to work out which should be sorted going forward with my new upcoming internet plan and a wireless extender.

As a refresher, I'm a 12 hc and have had face-to-face lessons every 3-6 months since I started playing 3 years ago.

After getting my cameras setup with Kinovea I had identified about 10 different flaws I wanted to change in my swing. A few swings into the lesson he had pinpointed an issue in my backswing swing to focus on (not one of the things on my list) which he believed would be creating a chain reaction of issues in my swing. This was on a Friday evening and I had a game booked for the Sunday morning so I had pretty much resigned myself to shooting well over 100 as having a major swing change 36 hours before a game is not a great idea. Well it turned out to be quite alright. I hit the ball much better than expected and in some cases much better than I had been. I dropped 2 birdies in a row and finished the front nine with an decent 41. The back nine killed me however as the swing thoughts and changes took their toll. I won't talk about that nine again

I've been putting in the work and I am seeing quite a difference in my swing as a result of this change already. So far it's looking very positive and i'm looking forward to having it ingrained so we can move to the next thing.

If you don't mind me asking. What is a good price for a FaceTime/Skype lesson? I had a gentleman offer to give me an hour lesson for $80 and I didn't want to commit due to not knowing anyone who did these kind of lessons. I am close to trying our a PGA instructor at the nearest GolfGalaxy, it is $129 for 3 lessons. The closest GolfGalaxy is 30-40 minutes away from me. Also, I only have iOS that I use with my Skytrak, would that hinder my lesson?

Shanky the person mentioned above charges 50. I obtained 2 lessons from him, but decided to go with one of the local pros and my course - we setup a barter arrangemen and he comes to the house where I have the skytrack, etc. We will also use the outside when weather gets nice for short game and sand traps.

Never a fan of golf galaxy and those places. Takes to much time. So, I would contact shanky if I was you.

I had my first lesson over FaceTime with Shankygolf yesterday and I thought it went very well. I am impressed on how much someone can do without physically being in the same location. I had my iPhone set up to look DTL and had my iPad in front of me for the Skytrak data. The time difference may be a bit of an obstacle since he is 5 hours ahead of me. However, I am going to try a series of lessons with him. I felt like my swing was better by the time we were done. Too bad he is banned from GSF.
