preludesam, you're missing the point: nobody has zero GRF or even close. The gains to be made here are relatively small. There are larger gains to be made elsewhere. Most golfers swing slow because they work a desk job or something, don't work out, expend far too much energy "off-plane," don't hit the ball solidly, flip at it and launch it high… etc.
I agree the LPGA Tour comparison isn't the same. They swing their 7I at like 76 MPH. It's not all that fast.
It's not always how much ground reaction force is being produced but when those forces are applied and if the golfer is using them effectively. Anyone is going to get better if they work at it more but the goal should be to get better in a reduced period of time. I believe knowing is half the battle and it requires data. We use the same methodology with an LM because we want to target a specific fault and have instant feedback if our countermeasure is working. I agree I got a little passionate about a force plate but I honestly think this will have the same impact on instruction that the LM did.
prelude, I know. I disagree that it will be the "future" of golf instruction. I purchased one of the first SwingCatalysts, have worked with them for eight years or so now, and teach a bunch of people. What they can provide is limited - far too often what the golfer needs to improve is not something that can be measured on a force plate. It's the way the wrists work in transition, or how and when the trail elbow bends, or… countless other things. Force plates are but one part of it, and even the $229 SALTED insoles can give you reasonably accurate pressure maps. If I was to say anything was going to be "the future" it might be something like the GEARS (full 3D motion capture) or even, for the lower budgeted people, the Sportsbox AI.
The golfer does a LOT more in the swing than that which can be measured at the feet.
I use the JC Video system and they have their Ground Force plate for $4000. I wanted to get a comparison $ so thank you for the cost estimate on Swing Catalyst.
Salted Golf has some cool insoles that give you similar information if it's something you'd like to explore for yourself versus being an instructor, coach, etc.
