    Swing Advice? (Video)

    Hello All,

I wanted to get some thoughts on my swing. I've had a terrible time correcting my slice. I just can't get it right. I've wanted to take lessons, and will when I find time that isnt dark and I can only hit in my garage.

I've tried everything. Turning my forearms over, bending my wrist at the top (like DJ), all those turning drills, all the drills from the Golf Channel, Youtube, everything. Just can't get it. So I took my Gopro and recorded my swing and I can't see anything with my untrained eye.

So I thought I would ask here. Skytrak numbers are in the video.

Wow - super flat takeaway to upright follow-through. Not sure if it's something you're doing intentionally, but had to comment on it. I don't really have advice on the slice from what I can see in the video.

You obviously have a very low back swing, I've done this before (not that low, but lower then I'm used to) a bit too until recently moving it a little higher because it takes less full body turn to square it up with a higher back swing. I would fight the big hooks or the pushes to the right (being right handed).

A couple of little things you might want to try is try keeping your left foot flat on the ground a little longer on the down swing and moving the ball a little more forward in your stance to give you more time to square up the club face.

For me, once I would push my back foot/knee out towards the ball on the down swing or get onto my toes, the right (your left) arm would tend to get stuck behind my right hip and I wouldn't have the room to square up the club and the end result was a push or push slice if I left the club open too

Just something to try if you haven't already

I will start with what I know. Which is not much. I would start with the grip. To me that is a very weak grip. keeping the club facing the target line, remove your right hand and rotate it counterclockwise until you can the top three knuckles,re-grip. Then re-grip with the left. This will feel really awkward at first. Try that first. You have a push slice. Starts out left of target and goes left even more. This means that the clubface is incorrect at impact and you are coming over the top.

I also think your swing is a bit flat. Since you come back very low, you have nowhere to go but come down over the top. If you start back coming up higher, you can come down lower. The feeling you want is that you are swinging out to left field, not center field.

Hope this helps. It took me over a year with weekly lessons to overcome this.

You might want to watch this video. I'm not sure if this is even the correct way to swing but it has really helped me turn my slice into a draw (though recently a slice has worked its way back into my driver). If there are other better golfers out they can comment if this guy is correctly showing what the forearms should do.

If most of your practice time is at night (like me), you may want to check out rotaryswing.com. I think it's like $149 a year for full access, but they have tons of videos on every aspect of the golf swing. It's all based on biomechanics to help prevent injury and to get the most out of your golf swing with minimal effort. You can also send in a video of your swing once every 2 weeks and their instructors provide a virtual lesson for you by breaking down your swing and giving you specific drills to work on. Check out the free videos first to see if it is for you.

Thanks, I'll have to look into that! Even a year worth sounds like it would be worth it if my game improves.

Thank you for the feedback, everyone. Now that I see it, my swing plane is very flat. I'm going to work on getting it up. ks-man, that video is interesting. I never saw it, but he makes good points. I'm going to have to work on that. Once I get my Skytrak back from Sky Golf I'll work on it and record my swing when there is improvement!

rsuslow yes your swing is very flat, your hands don't get above your shoulder. Not sure if it's from swinging inside and maybe unknowingly trying to keep it low from the ceiling, but if you start slow (you cannot go slow enough) and work on getting your hands above your shoulder, that could help and allow you to drop the club into the slot (between shoulder plane and shaft plane). Get a full length mirror and set it up behind you so you can see what it looks like at the top. If it's not correct, move your hands to this position and then start over and try again. When looking down the line from behind, you would like to see a triangle of open space between your forearms. Regardless if you like Tiger or not he had a pretty effective driver swing at one point.

PS, i had the same issue of a flat swing, but i went under and stayed under plane so I was hitting big sweeping draws/hooks.

ust an addition, if you pause the video and then move the cursor around so you see the frames, in the 5 second frames, you can see your hands at a lower position then when you start your transition down your hands move up causing the over the top move.

Sorry, one more. I use coach's eye (coach travel baseball and softball) its an app that you can take video with and draw lines on to see your planes and where the club is traveling. I think it's only a couple bucks, but may be well worth it.

As mentioned above, alot of your problems (pushing to left) is the extreme flat swing. One drill that I would use is to place a tee or coin about 10 inches directly behind the ball you are hitting. Then concentrate on the backswing to make your club brush the tee (or coin) on the takeaway and then let the club naturally go to the top of your swing...you may not feel it, but you will have enough inside/out swing....

Try putting something like a headcover about a foot or so beyond the ball (on the target line) and work on missing that on the through swing, looks to me like your angle of attack is too steep with swing direction too much to the right. Missing the headcover should promote a more upward and leftward angle of attack. Imagine a clockface on the ground with 6 o'clock - 12 o'clock as the target line, you want to feel your swing is going more from 5-11 o'clock if that makes sense.

For what its worth I don't think you have any issues with your backswing and also believe rolling the forearms with your swing is a bad bad move imo because you'll lust end up pull hooking everything.

EDIT - just watched video 2 and thats what you do in that one for the better results! Also the left heel stays down longer through the downswing in this one and this helps big time

So this morning I was watching the PGA channel and they had this short segment with Bernhard Langer about hitting the driver well. He said all he does is rake a comfortable stance, when he makes his turn he gets the front shoulder over the back knee on the backswing, and then gets his rear shoulder over his front knee on the follow through to know he swings through the ball. I took this to the course today had all but one drive on or just off the fairway. Shot a 90 which is the lowest Ibe shot in a few months. My putting did me in, probably could have shot an 85 if a few dropped sooner.

That's actually a very interesting, easy tip to try, I'm actually gonna give this a go myself

I didn't expect much from it. Then hit my first tee shot (didn't get a chance to hit the range since I was a walk on single) and it went straight. Thought okay, that was good, then tee shot two went straight. Thought, maybe I have something here. I duck hooked tee shot three, but knew I messed up as the club hit 5 inches behind the ball. But re-tee'd and it faded a bit, but more playable than I have ever had on that hole. Then on 6, a pat 5 that eats me alive, I made par with a 292 yard drive (wind behind me) and my 3 wood landed next to the green. A chip and a two putt got me my first par on that hole.

Your club goes so far under plane on the way back that it has no choice but to get over the plane on the way down. Copy Furyk

Try David Leadbetters new swing concept. It promotes an upright swing plane with no forearm rotation, keeping the club head out front and right arm above left.
