  • Winter Match Play Challenge 1/29 - 3/2

18 holes double elimination/consolation match play tournament. Month long but no real deadline. Will run concurrent with other tournaments.
It will be seeded by the current points standings. Starts after the Abu Dhabi Championship. 6 different courses will be used, one for each stage.

    Here's how it will work:

You will set up the game as stroke play, because the game does not figure in our hdcp's.
Enter your scores in mleaderboard as usual.
We are playing all 18 holes. Stroke play, one on one match.
If there's a tie after 18, then use the scorecard to figure out the winner. Start with hdcp #1 hole.

Or if you and your opponent choose to play your match as match play, subtract your hdcps. Then give the strokes to the higher hdcp guy, starting with #1 INDX hole. i.e. a 10 is playing a 5. 10-5=5

The 10 hdcp will get 5 strokes starting with #1 INDX hole. On the scorecard, the winner of the hole will enter a 1 for that hole. The loser of the hole do

I wouldn't say it's normal but there are a few courses with strange stuff like that. I try not to pick them but with so many courses, it's hard to keep track of the problems with each course.

Also, for those that don't know, when you hit into a hazard that clearly has a red stake, try to take a drop instead of a rehit. If you accidentally select rehit, just adjust your score accordingly.

Just a quick note on match play and using each others HC.

When we play at our course we compare our handicaps and subtract them. So if I had a 10 HC and played a guy that had a 15 HC he would get 5 strokes and they would then be on holes ranked from the hardest 1 to 5. So this would mean on the front 9 he would get 3 holes where he would get a stroke and then 2 on the back 9. Holes are ranked starting with the hardest 1 on the front and then 2 would go to the hardest on the back, then 3 would be on the front and 4 on the back and so on.

If anyone would get 18 strokes you would have one on every hole. If you had 20 you would get 2 on the hardest and second hardest holes and one on the rest.

We would of course play all 18 anyway.

I am not sure which course it is on but it is one that is coming. the tee boxes have a outer edge that looks like a different colored grass. and I hit a wayward ball that hit a tree and it bounced up on the tee box of another hole and it rolled to this grass edge. Then it dropped off the map and when it was my turn it said I had 21 yards up hill to go and no LIE label. that happened once on Augusta right in the middle of a fairway one night too. that time it said 63 yards up hill. the camera points straight down when your ball rolls into this anomaly. and on your next shot your ball is not visible. It also happened on a course right on the green. that was when I first got my Protee. Not sure what goes on there but I choked it up to a Red Chain thing. As far as the water hazard I have seen that on more than one course. We just played a course that had that problem, water was on the left and I played with a guy who hit it in the water and it clearly was not in. And then I did it the next

If this is what you guys want, then we will do it this way. Even if we play all 18, I don't know if I would trust the scores to use for handicapping. And if we don't trust it, then no need to use it. Then if we don't use the scores for handicapping....Well, I think you know where I'm going with this....

you guys blew my mind. If I am correct there is no match play online in the system. So are you saying we play match play but keep track of it ourselves? If you are afraid of a higher handicap winning against a lower handicap it is not true. I have the highest handicap of all of us and Rick beat me by 4 strokes with handicaps. So I do not think it is unfair.

I understand that match play is for each hole. So there is a good chance the round will not go 18, heck it could be over in 9. But there is no way to do this online without a lot of ground rules and understanding on both sides.

Am I wrong?? I just don't want to complicate this too much. I just want to play and have fun. I thought tonights matchup was outstanding between Rick and I. I am not sure what Rick's handicap was but mine was 20 coming into the match. I do notice that Zmax adjusts it after each round. I have dropped 6 strokes in a week. But we were 1 stroke apart through 15 holes. It was very exciting. T

I have played In leagues that do it that way as well. Either way works for me. I think since some first rounds have already started we should stick to the stroke play for the first round. We could then use match play rules for rounds 2 on. I've never tried the match play game in ProTee so I don't know if that could be used. If a match ends early it can be up to the players whether they want to continue. The end result is one winner and one loser. Score doesn't matter

Match play adds another element of giving putts and getting away with blow up holes. If you are having a back and forth match it's a blast. With stroke play if you blow up on hole 8 you are pretty much out. With match play you just conceded the hole and move on with only a 1 down. I know a lot of people don't know the rules and it's a shame. Match play is a ton of fun

There are pro's and con's to both sides of which way we play this event. I agree it has to be fair. But win loose or draw it better be fun for the masses. So do what you want with my scores just keep it fun my friend.... keep it fun.

So far every match has ended up the same as if we played Match play. I agree they are different and that matchplay is very fun, but I don't care either way. It's fine the way it is to me. If matches are close and fun, its good.

No one is saying they are afraid to play a high HDCP. Not in match play. I am very afraid to play you in stroke play. If I screw the poooch in any way shape or form I am done. But in match play I loose one. Its all a mind game that we all play on ourselves. Going into a match 20 strokes down is a heavy burden. even for a scratch golfer. Nothing personal here bro I have fun golfing with you. And I see your game is improving and I am happy for you. That is what HDCP is for to even the playing field and its working. And it will continue to work. the rules of golf are pretty clear its like mixing

OK. How about this? I'll let you guys and your opponent decide before the match on how you guys want to play it. You can play it the way we've been doing it and keep scores for 18 holes or you can play it as a real match play after subtracting the hdcps. You let me know who won.
