  • Question about horizontal ball direction

I have noticed when looking at other people's data that some players have horizontal ball direction rounded off to the nearest degree. I am wondering why that is. Is it an advantage sometimes and sometimes a disadvantage?? What I mean by that is .... a putt that is 0.6 degrees left..... if rounded up to 1 degree will be way off over 30 feet. Is this a forgiveness setting? I have noticed this on ProTee, GC2, but not skytrak or GSA. Any ideas?

All of my recorded shots are rounded for both HA and LA. The GC2 display on the unit is not rounded for either measure. I have no idea if its a GSX setting or not. I am curious to the answer. I don't think I changed anything from the defaults.

Yeah, you want to make sure that the TGC gets the accurate number and not what is shown in club data. Not a big deal on most shots. But putting accuracy would suck if TGC was using rounded off numbers.

I am going to dig into it next time I get on. I think it reports the reading in a log on the GSX screen and and maybe in the pro-tee interface. I haven't paid much attention to that but I am curious now.

Here are my screen grabs GSX shows the decimal, protee is showing a rounded number. Not sure if that means anything.

Maybe it's nothing to be concerned about. I see that your system measures to the 1/100. GSA also measures to the 1/100 but TGC displays to the 1/10 in shot data. If the data used by TGC is rounded to the nearest degree.... that would make putting and chipping somewhat inconsistent. That would mean that a 0.51 and 1.49 would register as 1 degree and those two putts would be quite different IRL. It would also help the golfer to not have them rounded off..... you may be thinking that you are dead straight but are always 0.49 left. It is weird that they round off ball path but not ball speed.

GC2's horizontal azimuth reading is a +/- 1º measurement. Because of this, all GC2 users should have their putting forgiveness set at 2.

That means that any putt that is measured less than 1.5º offline left or right, is sent to TGC as a straight, 0.0º putt. If the measurement of the putt is over 1.5º left or right, the displayed value of horizontal azimuth is sent as measured.

That means that if I hit a putt that ACTUALLY was off 0.4º to the right, GC2 could measure it as 1.4º to the right, or 0.6º to the left...yet in both cases (since the measurement is less than 1.5º left or right) the putt is sent to TGC as a straight 0.0º putt. If I hit a putt that was ACTUALLY off 0.6º to the right, GC2 could measure it as 1.6º to the right, or 0.4º to the left...which, for the 1.6º measurement would be sent to TGC as is, and the 0.4º to the left measurement would be sent as a 0.0º straight putt.

That's how I understand it, but I could be wrong.

That is only applied to putts, as far as I know. And obviously only applies to GC2 users.

That's my understanding as well. We set 2 on gc2 2 years ago I think.

Is putting forgiveness a TGC thing or a GC2 thing?

It's in GSX which is used for GC2's

So what happens for us skytrak users? Does ours get the same relief somehow, if so how? We have a little wider tolerance at +/- 2 deg

So, is this a limitation of a Launch monitor then? If so, not much that anyone can do. Within a degree is still pretty good though. To give you an idea of what 1 degree difference will make on a 10 foot putt....... if you putt 10 feet and are off by 3 inches left or right, that equals 1.43 degrees off center. I have a GSA system that uses HCam to measure speed and direction. I have a flat surface with a piece of tape 11 feet away showing center. Even though my system measures to the 1/100 of a degree, it rounds off to 1/10. I was just curious why some systems were rounded off to 1 degree.

I think that it might be worth mentioning that launch monitor users would be well served to try to putt straight and aim within the game. I am sometimes too lazy to walk to the keyboard.... so occasionally I will aim with my putter and not the game. I can aim 4 inches left over 11 feet and make it work. I would still rather have a GC2 even though it seems that camera systems are more accurate for putting. When I bought my irons at Golftown, I hit hundreds of 7 irons on a GC2. It even reproduced my slight draw when I swing a little too hard. I am just waiting to get hit with a bag full of money.

I think I have my forgiveness set to 1 or 0. So, what is that going to do? I haven't been changing my aim in the game and instead try to simulate the putting angle I need. This rounding could explain the occasional putt I felt I should have made based on the GC2 reading. I guess I'd be better served by aiming in game and trying to putt straight.... Hurts realism a bit though.

It's a real toss up with TGC users. Some prefer aiming in the game (I do) and some prefer to aim by hitting left or right of target. (I do that when playing bad)

For me it was just easier since I don't have to touch anything. I tried moving the aim stick on my last round. Reading the green is a little different so I'll have to get used to it. I did have one putt that lipped out. I was 0.7 R which I assume the system changed to 1 R so I missed the putt. I had the forgiveness at 0 or 1, I checked it after the round. I changed it back to 2. I'm still curious what the 0 and 1 settings do.
