Face angle reading not matching horizontal cam reading

ok. I have been trying to get my face angle reading to match my hcam streak and no matter how I adjust the club face angle correction it seems really inconsistent. Sometimes it matches up great and other times it the hcam streak is right 1 degree and the face reads closed 2 degrees. This is especially prominent with the driver. Am I out of line thinking I can get this to be consistent within + or - 1 degree consistently. I don't mind random misreads but this is driving me bonkers. I switched my lights and plumb bobbed then again to make sure all was good there. Nothing on my sensors either. Any help would be appreciated.

Your horizontal camera will measure the ball path. It won't be the same as your face angle which is measured through your club sensor. They really shouldn't match.

I was kind of thinking they should be in the general same direction (not an exact match or anything). For example if my clubhead path is inside out 1 degree and the hcam reads right 1 degree it doesn't seem like I would have a 2 degree closed face. Doesn't the face account for quite a bit of the initial ball direction?

Club path is the direction the ball would start. Club face is the were the golf ball will finish.

Over the last several years, golf instruction has gone through a unique transformation. The advent of 3D motion analysis, video, and ball/club flight launch monitors have proven to golf instructors that some of the “fundamentals” we were taught by our mentors were incorrect. With the advent of Trackman and Flightscope, advanced Doppler radar launch monitors […]

thanks inorkuo, I was actually using that exact article you linked to when examining my protee set up. Ball should start in the general direction the face is pointed, which was why I am concerned with some of results I am getting where the face is reading the opposite direction that my hcam initial ball direction is going. My path is pretty consistently square more or less which I can confirm with my down the line camera so that shouldn't be affecting the initial ball direction too much. Any recommendations or suggestions on tweaking my system other than what I have tried?

This article is a bit clearer in my view:

If you are a golfer over the age of 25, you were probably taught the old ball flight laws. You know, the one stating that club path determined the starting direction of the golf ball and that face controlled the curvature. If so, you were probably shown a ball flight law poster similar to the […]

However, Bubba22 is absolutely right when he points out the the HCam angle generally shouldn't match the club face angle.

The HCam provides a measurement of the ball direction. The ProTee sensor provides a measurement of the clubface angle. The two are not directly related and will never be if you understand what the "ball flight laws" are implying. There is an inter-relationship between the two, but it's rarely 1:1.

You are kidding yourself if you think that your "down the line" camera is proving that your path is "consistently square".

The ProTee sensor also measures the club path (as well as the club face angle). It is telling you what is really going on. Those aren't misreads.

There is nothing to "tweak", certainly not on the evidence of a down the line camera.

i spent a lot of time tweaking my protee system and i went about it the same way as the op. unless the circuit board is mounted perfectly straight, there is some amount of tweaking that should happen. i eventually got mine pretty dialed in and my path and face settings were not all zeros. i agree that face and hcam direction will not match 1 to 1 but if you swing pretty square and hit close to center face, they should be close. i use foot powder spray to see where on the face i'm hitting.

if a camera is positioned correctly, why do you say you can't determine your swing path? i have a dtl camera that i use with kinovea. i draw a line on the shaft at impact and if the club head is below the line coming into impact and above the line after, then my path was inside out. the opposite for outside in. if the club head travels along the line, the path should be close to square. if the ball hits the middle of the screen, and my path is inside out according to the camera, gc2 will agree and show draw spin. i can do the same with fades, pushes and pulls and the results i get from gc2 and the video analysis always make sense. with driver, i have to account for gear effect and a tilted setup in order to swing up at the ball but the same principles apply.

Thanks for the additional article Aja that one is nicely explained. I definitely understand face angle isn't going to match my hcam exactly. It just seemed weird to me that they would be in opposite directions, face pointed one way and initial ball direction going the other, especially when I had a clubhead path that was reading square or inside out a degree or two on the protee data. To clarify, you guys think it's feasible for a ball to start right of target with a two degree closed club face and square or inside out 1-2 degrees path (both these numbers measured by protee). If so I will stop messing around with my system and return to working on my game instead 😀 Thanks again for taking the time to help me.

That is possible. I Will throw some impact tape on there tonight and see if the bulge of the driver face is playing a part. I didn't really think of that before. Again thanks everyone for the help feel free to chime in with anything else I may have forgotten.

I have been through this extensively. If you could post some screen shots I can help with your settings. Post one of your driver hit with a relatively straight path, face. one with an in to out say 2-4 degrees and straight face with whatever the path is. Do you have a copy of your Alt-e settings in .txt format? If you want to send them through a PM I can look at the and set it straight. When I get home I can post what I am getting as well.

Boerdoc, i didn't get a chance to hit balls last night. Hopefully today. Will send you settings and post screen shots once I do.

Boerdoc, here are three screen shots. The first two seem pretty normal, but then the third seem out of whack. I will say after hitting a lot of shots I didn't get too many of the crazy ones, so maybe I am overthinking. I PM'd you my settings.

Ok, more help here please. I turned on the sweetspot and gear factor which was suggested to me by Boerdoc and have been making adjustments to the driver SS so its reading fairly accurate now. Here are some screenshots, am I wrong or should these shots be curving to the right and not the left.

After watching hours of video on club path, face angle and what happens to the ball, in the first pic it looks like a path pull, meaning the club path was over the top (slightly) which results in the ball going left. Second pic looks like a face slice, path straight face slightly open.Third pic you hit it on the heel which could result in the ball flight. The last pic is a pretty good example of how to make the ball draw you see the ball going out to the right but coming back to the target line, it didn't quit get there because the numbers were not exactly right. So to get the ball to draw you have to hit it to the right one or more degrees than your face is open ( to the path) because then the face is actually closed to the path and will impart the correct spin on the ball to get it to move. So all of these examples look good to me.
