  • Greenside bunkers vs fairway bunkers.

I am using Protee and TGC

How do you know if TGC or Protee for that matter will respond with a "greenside penalty (40) vs a fairway bunker penalty(0). We have had erratic readings on this. For example, If there is a giant greenside bunker and you are say 50 yards away, still greenside, how should you play it? On some courses, it reacts as a bunker blast going the 40% in the penalties, Sometimes it goes full distance. Is the determination, Position of the bunker greenside? Or is it the distance from ball to pin that determines the "greenside penalty effect".?

We have TGC greenside penalty at 40 and all other penalties at 0. Is this correct?

Do the chipping and pitching distance settings affect this?

    Does club selection affect this?

What other settings should I check to be more accurate?

Also, We had a fairway bunker from 155 yards or so that we took 15 shots and could not get it to go more that 40 yards, different clubs and golfers alike. It was landing back in the long bunker. We ended up playing the shot sideways just to get it out. (I think this was in Protee, not sure, I can ask my kids if need be).

I want this to be consistent. When I hit what I think is a bunker blast and the shot goes full distance, I will rewind. During friendly rounds, No big deal. During online tournaments, I face a dilemma with fair play.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Sand within 40 yards from the pin is considered green side bunker. If the ball is in the same GIANT green side bunker but 50 yards from the pin, then the fairway bunker penalty will apply.
Interface penalty goes on top of integrated penalty which for green side bunkers is approx 20% ball speed decrease and 10% backspin decrease.

Pitching and chipping distance probably have an effect on this as well. This is a good point. Maybe these effects should be switched off when in a bunker.

The only way to test is to play a ball into a bunker within the 40 yards distance and turn on auto rewind.

Thank you for the great answer.

When you said " Maybe these effects should be switched off when in a bunker", were you meaning that it should be a software/code change or something we should do each shot?

I will do some test shots at various distances.
