    Putting and JNPG

    I have noticed that putting isn't all that accurate. I've read a bunch of threads for TGC, but couldn't find much for JNPG. When I test some straight putts on a ruler and the readings seem completely random. I even will hit some drastically left and as often as not, the ball will go right and vice versa. Same with short chips. Is there a setting that can make this better or just something that comes with the territory of the Skytrak.

    Not a deal breaker for me as Im having a ton of fun playing JNPG.

    Also, what reading in Sim console determines the left/right putting line vs straight putt.

    Skytrak doesnt read horizontal angle very accurately. So it just comes with the territory. Protee is working on an integration to remedy this in TGC, but JNPG is a separate entity. They also have their own forum, so you can check that out for the answers youre looking for.

      I don't believe this is a SkyTrak issue because the Fitness Golf software reads putting direction and distance great and this has been extensively tested.

        Depends on what is considered great.

        A very good test of putting is the Putting Combine on the JNPG tour—as the three attempts you get at each putt somewhat takes green reading out of the equation.The Putting Combine was led by a guy with a SkyTrak before he upgraded to a GC2 (and still leads it). I am now the leading SkyTrak owner, in 4th place, and find it a very enjoyable experience because the balls launch as I expect and I'll know the moment I've hit a putt whether it will be a fraction too short or too long.

        However JNPG has a good algorithm in place for scaling down the launch direction according to putt strength and gives a believable experience without making it too easy.

        SkyTrak's HLA accuracy (spec'd at ±2° but I notice it's slightly better than that with putting) in itself is unacceptable for putting. SkyTrak themselves say the device isn't meant for putting and from what I've read, TGC has a patch that zeroes launch directions from 0° to ±3°.

        fitness golfer What was the standard deviation you found you were reading from SkyTrak?

          I am guessing that what you meant to say in your second last statement was "TGC has a patch that zeroes launch directions from ±3° to 0°."

          No - but I could have worded it better. 0° to ±3° I meant as a range (minus 3° to plus 3°).

        In SimConsole there are two Horizontal Direction readings - the large one at the top and one in the log scrolling up down the bottom.

        The bottom one is the value SkyTrak delivers. The top one after SimConsole has scaled it down to deliver it to JNPG. The faster the putt is hit, the less scaling it gets.

            There are 2 different solutions implemented in TGC. One is the straight putting (settings file: Putting Straight) that zeroes launch directions to 0, and the other is Putting Correction (settings file: Putting Correction) which corrects degrees like this:

            4+ => 3
            3/4 => 2
            2/3 => 1
            2- => 0

            Apparently according to fitnessgolfer there is no issue, so we can remove these options

              Is the same putting workaround going to be used for tgc2? Any thoughts on using jnpg's speed dependent putting correction instead?

            If you have a skytrak it's a must to use the straight putting fix in TGC IMO. Otherwise you'll be dealing with random 3 degree readings on putts thst will drive you crazy. It's a skytrak issue, not any of the software. It doesn't happen every time but just enough to make you want to smash a club through the machine

              Really was responding to the OP about the putting inaccuracies of JNPG. We don't have JNPG so we can't really test this. I will say that after hitting thousands of putts with the SkyTrak and Fitness Golf, we have never seen a putt on a flat green that is hit with a closed putter face end up right of the hole and vice-versa as the OP is seeing in JNPG. I just went out and hit several hundred putts with the SkyTrak and Fitness Golf. I found a course with a perfectly flat green and hit putts from 10 feet in the software and from this actual distance in my simulator set-up. I putted the ball on a slotted ruler that was visually aligned with a rod in my SkyTrak case to make sure they were both parallel. I then placed a marker at the bottom of my impact screen exactly where the ruler/putt would hit. I hit putts with a closed ruler/putter face, straight ruler/putter face, and open ruler/putter face. Not once did a ball that missed my impact screen marker to the left end up right of the hole in the game and vice versa. If I am doing my trigonometry correctly, if I am putting from 10 feet and the SkyTrak can be off 3 degrees this should occasionally cause the ball in the game to be off by more than 6 inches compared to IRL. I never saw this after hundreds of hit putts. Was it accurate to the inch?- hard to say but probably not. Does it allow for a great round of simulated golf to be played?- I think so. To be fair, I used the same ruler testing in TGC software with putting correction off and I got the same results- never had a putt miss on the wrong side of the hole when it shouldn't. Could this putting problem vary from SkyTrak unit to SkyTrak unit? Could it be related to where your ball is placed relative to the laser dot, and the exact height of your unit relative to the mat? For the record, I always place the ball for all shots directly on the laser dot and have essentially zero no-reads.

                you must have the best skytrak ever made. lots of people here have tested theirs. there is a long thread somewhere on here if you want to search for it. the slower the putt, the more trouble skytrak has reading the horizontal angle correctly.

                I'm just calling it as I see it with my SkyTrak. I've read the entire thread you are referring to. The reason I question whether the putting problems may vary from one Skytrak to another is that Gary says in that thread that from day 1 his SkyTrak has had a 3 degree right putting bias. If the SkyTrak randomly can be off +3 to -3 degrees why do his putts always go too far to the right?
