  • TGC2 Upgrade question/projection

Sorry to beat a dead horse here, but, I was doing a thorough amount of research here on the forum regarding upgrading to TGC2, and I came across a reply from Protee which basically stated that license holders from the original TGC would not likely pay full price (or anything at all) to upgrade to TGC2. I believe this remark was said in or around August of this year. Since that time, there has been a bit of silence on this issue concerning pricing and the software in general.

Is the consensus among the members of this forum still that any upgrade fee to TGC2 from TGC will indeed be minimal or has the relative radio silence from Protee on this specific topic undercut such hope with a bit of uncertainty....?

I am planning on it being no charge....but I have that on no authority.

It is annoying that they won't say, but there will be an uproar if it is much money at all. They won't want to get bashed like Skytrak over poor pricing communications.

I am not attempting to be the bad guy here but how can you expect pro tee (or who makes the software) to get nothing for a major upgrade? I want them to keep making TGC better since I have a 1,000 investment in it. Now, to charge 1000 again I think would be high, but 250 to 500 if the product is that much better for a new number it would seem reasonable to me. just my thoughts.

I also agree. I would love them to give it away for free, but I wouldn't blame them at all for an upgrade fee between $100-$350. I think we should all be reminded that foresight and others sell their software and courses for crazy amounts. Protee has done the community a service to bring us great simulation at a reasonable price. Not trying to attract torches, but they have development time into this and I want them to continue being a great company.

Your ok with a 500 increase? I'm not a software guy, but i don't believe their reinventing the wheel here.

For me the decision was jnpg 250 a year versus $900 tcg license. Only had tcg for 1.5 years when tcg 2 comes out so sinking any significant amount of money for tgc 2 is going to make me feel I might have made the wrong choice and might affect my decision on whether to upgrade.

I bought TGC almost 3 years ago, and it was free with a purchase of ProTee - which I paid $1995 for (discounted from $2840 on a special offer).
I bought ProTee purely to get TGC. A few months later, they made TGC available as a stand-alone purchase for $1000.

                Gutted, but shit happens eh?!
I’m sure lots of you bought Christmas presents a few weeks ago that’ll be half price in the January sales. You just have to suck it up!

If you spent your life waiting for the right time to buy, you’d never own anything. There’s always a new / better version round the corner.

TGC2 should be a major upgrade, and as a result should have an upgrade cost. Why should the developers put all the extra work into it for nothing?

If there is a cost to the upgrade, I feel many people will not upgrade. I have TGC2 on PC, and its really not any better than TGC1. The focus of TGC2 was entirely on things that I dont care about, and probably most sim golfers dont care about. Its all about online societies, building a virtual clubhouse with money you earn from winning and stuff like that. The physics and graphics are very similar to TGC1.

The only features that matter are multiple tee's and pins, which will be nice.

So my hope is that the upgrade is low/no cost, and that if the sim players here fragment between TGC1 and TGC2, there is some way to continue the GSF tour with players on both versions.

TGC is the best sim software available, its too bad that it didnt improve that much between versions 1 and 2.

The graphics and ball physics are greatly improved in TGC2! With that said, you are right about the other upgrades, but that isnt the Sim version. If Protee wasnt changing much, it would be released already imo. Will have to wait and see whats customized for us SIM users. Hopefully Protee has been been reading our TGC2 features threads.

Graphics are OK, but still behind the curve as far as what is possible. Yes its better than TGC1, but TGC1 was pretty dated looking to begin with.

Physics still feel wrong around the green. Rock hard greens are still an issue, there are apparently only 3 firmness settings in the course designer and none are realistic. Putting and chipping feel really bad to me. How much of this is due to bad physics, I am not sure. Maybe when using a launch monitor instead of an xbox controller it will feel better.

As far as protee adding major features, I dont expect that to happen. In TGC1 they added some hotkeys and menu options. No new features. I would not expect that to change for TGC2. Software development is pretty expensive, and golf sim software is a tiny market. It likely doesnt make sense for protee to spend tens of thousands (at least) to add new game features. I think they nailed the current product...take the best golf game on the market (TGC), and add launch monitor input to it. They did a great job, and I am very happy that they are continuing to add support for TGC2. But outside of some sim-related menu and configuration options, I would not expect changes to the base game.

I guess opinions will vary. If theres a sim out there with better graphics, I am all ears, but havent found it yet. I agree with ya that on TGC1 there wasnt much customization, but that was then. There is a better understanding of what is wanted now. Ya the market is small, but it has grown considerably from where it was too. Your concerns are valid, but Im gonna remain hopeful! Fingers crossed

Can anybody tell me how to set gimmies on TGC2 for PC? I just can't find out how to do it. (Very dumb I know)

I don't think you can. They only have gimmies in the Sim version of TGC because some hardwares won't register very short putts.

Exactly. Especially when what they're most likely adding is available in pretty much every other software already abailable.

I'm with Shardak on this. If the price for the upgrade is high there will be definitely fragmentation of the user group. Especially because a lot of us already have TGC and are quite happy with it.
Sure we want improvement but not at any cost. There was attractiveness in paying so much initially with no yearly licence fee. With another charge on the horizon every couple of years, I wouldn't do it again. I'd rather pay a yearly rental, as in JNPG, keep the original TGC as an option and then keep a look out and be able to try new things as they become available.
There have been a few add this year and more are on the way i'm sure.
