How often do you change golf balls when hitting on golf mat

Yes yes yes sirish19 - I do sooooo agree. I'm just a rubbish 61 yr old 18 handicapper, but the differences really are big enough for me to notice even with my normally mediocre hitting. I compared supersoft to chrome soft hitting full sand wedges and here's the average of my (decent) shots:

So now here's a harder question - which would you rather have? A spin of 6000 but descent of 54 deg or a much higher spin but a lower shot height and descent? Now that I come to think about it, I'm not sure! (The totals are pretty similar anyway) Views, anybody?...........

Yes skytrakali, I was thinking the exact same thing. If the end result is basically the same, does it really matter if you are getting higher spin and lower launch angle and height vs. lower spin and higher launch angle and height. Especially when there is a really significant difference in price of these balls. Someone who was reviewing balls on Youtube said something interesting though in that, if you have a much higher ball flight, you will have a more significant impact of wind and other elements. That really made a lot of sense and I agree that you can control things a lot more accurately if you have a lower launch and flight and can get some backspin as opposed to getting it caught up in the wind or landing and rolling forward.

Yes - agreed. I think that overall I'd rather have the spin and the lower shot.

I pretty much stick to the multi-layer tour balls but try a bunch of different brands (ProV1x, B330X, Chrome Soft X, TP5x, Cut, Snell, Kirkland) to compare spin and feel etc.. great part of having a LM.

Anyway, I use a hitting net instead of a projection screen (partly cost, partly noise). My net has become frayed in a few spots and I managed to punch a ball through the other day. Apparently I need to monitor my balls a little better for scuffs and change them out more frequently.

For your amusement this is what a golf ball does to drywall.

Out of curiosity, what kind of net do you use? How long have you had it before punching a hole in it? Did you notice any wear in the net beforehand?

I use The Net Return pro series. It is a great net but for some reason it doesn't last nearly close to the "200,000 shots" they advertise. It was about 8 months before I started noticing a lot of frayed netting and finally punched a ball through a month later. I emailed them pictures of the holes they sent me replacement net for free.

Pro tip: don't keep hitting into a net that is frayed.. I tried to fix it with velcro ties etc but the force of a ball is too much.

My solution to their netting wearing down too quickly was to buy their Net Guardian small reinforcement nets they sell for like $40. They are like 4' x 8' rectangles I cut them in half to get 2 smaller ones and attach it over the main netting. I still see wear accumulating on these extra netting but its much easier to replace those over time.

I'm not exactly sure why my setup causes this much damage to the netting. I use tour balls for a few days at most until there is visible wear. I stand about 8 feet from the net and my swing speed tops out around 150-155mph. Maybe its because I'm using softer multi piece balls and the high spin is damaging the net. I imagine the places that pound thousands of balls are using cheaper, harder ones so maybe that is the difference??

According to my experience, especially the high spin ball is affected by the damage to golf nets. The net was torn in the places where the impact of the strike hit the higher irons, not at the impact of the driver or woods strikes.
