    No Reads (dot remains)

    Hey all,

My skytrak is 2 years old, and I am getting an increasing amount of "No Reads" lately and its getting frustrating. I want to talk you through what is happening and see what you guys think. These happen while playing TGC2019

I get two types of no reads, the more common one is when the ball is struck, the dot vanishes like normal, and while waiting for the shot to appear on the screen, the dot will reappear and nothing happened. The golfer then needs to re hit his shot. This happens perhaps once every 2 or 3 holes (assume two players are playing at a time).

About two weeks ago, I started seeing a different type of No read, where the ball is struck, and the dot never vanishes. This happens less frequently than the other type, but often when it happens, it will happen 3, 4, 5 swings in a row. On occasion, when this happens, I will click ESC to watch a replay of a shot, then return to normal play and it will read the next shot. Not always, but about 70 percent of the time.

From reading this thread, we do the following:

We use a ball with markings on it (Chromsoft with little spades, clubs, etc).
No reflective items behind the golfer
We try and place the ball slightly behind the dot for lower lofted shots (woods, long irons) and a hair in front of the dot for higher shots (wedges).
There are two lights in the garage, both are above and slightly behind the skytrack.
Its perfectly level and the base of the unit sit flush with the fiber built mat we hit off of.
Before we play a round, I take it out of the case to wipe down the glass, and laser dot area (I do feel that fibers from the mat fly into that thing a lot so we clean it a lot).

There seems to be no common theme to the no reads. It can happen to me, or my buddies at any given time. So I dont believe its the shoes, clubs, etc.

My laptop is not the greatest, but I have used it since December and there used to be full rounds where I might have 2 or 3 no reads, which wasn't bad. I cant imagine the computer would matter anyway.

Its getting worse, and very upsetting. I am wondering if you guys have had this type of thing in the past, and what can be done about it. Maybe it needs a "tuneup" or something like that. I read that some of you feel like you get a no read once every 100 shots. Which seems impossible to me when I seem to get it once every 10-15 shots and sometimes multiple times in a row.

Attached are some photos of the set up

Please, any advice would be appreciated.

When that happens (dot never disappears) it's because no shot was detected in SkyTraks camera window at all. I saw it a lot if I tried to hit a flop shot because straight up always managed to elude the camera.. even with a forward ball position.

If this isn't the problem you are seeing I would try removing it from the case for a little bit and checking that the lens is clean. You said you did this, but try keeping it out of the case in case that is the obstruction. It looks like the SkyTrak is level with the hitting surface in the picture so I don't know what else to suggest. Make sure if you try it without the case that it remains level.

Sounds like you tried the obvious.
      • Is it the exact same in ST range?
      • Have you tried a different connection method?
      • Have you tried without the case (be careful)?
      • If you have any lefties in your group, is it the same for them?

When this happened to me it was the laser curtain starting to fail. It gradually got worse with no reads and then one day failed to register any shots. Had to send it back to be repaired.

I have that happen occasionally as well. I have my set-up outside and I usually find there are more misreads before dark. Not necessarily when the ST or ball is sitting in direct sunlight as I don't usually play in direct sunlight (although I have played rounds when the sun was directly behind me with no issues at all). I tend to find this happens more frequently with either chip shots or puts. I generally just use plain white balls and don't really bother too much about which direction the logo is pointing. If it starts happening too frequently with puts, I will sometime try changing to a new ball and that sometimes helps.

I have had my ST for about 2 years and it doesn't really happen all that often to be too frustrating (yet).

Other things I have tried have been to switch to the ST software and hit a few shots there (I don't seem to get too many misreads with ST interestingly). It is not just isolated to TGC 2019 though as I did get occasional misreads (both types that you describe above) with ES and WGT as well. I have also shut down the ST and restarted, reconnected, and it seems to help sometimes.

To me, unfortunately this sounds like the laser curtain may be starting to fail. I'd suggest setting up a return to have the unit looked at.

Thanks guys for your input. I have never hit with it out of the case, and I dont have any leftys in the group. I do think it happens more in the TGC game than on the skytrak range. I can only think of a handful of times I saw a no read on the ST Range. But that could also be because 90 percent of the play is me using TGC.

I should note that it happens on all kinds of shots, not just flop shots. It can happen with the long irons and woods as well. Its very random. One thing I havent done is play in network mode, I normally just leave it plugged in to direct mode, so I dont have to worry about the battery.

              • USB can have some static issues. So try direct connection via wifi. Use a phone or ipad or whatever. If you think ST range works better, use that when trouble shooting.
              • Sometimes it does not sit well in case, and this can lead to more no reads, but mostly for low trajectory shots. Still worth a try.
              • If none of those do the trick, right hand laser curtain is the most likely. The quickest way to test laser curtain is to have a lefty hit a shot. If you have no lefty friends available, put in lefty mode, place the ST between your feet and ball, turned 180 (so sensor faces away from you). Be careful. If it reads perfectly, yes, laser curtain.

If it's mostly while using TGC sometimes the Rapsodo/ProTee interface looses the connection between the ST and TGC. You have to close/exit the interface and then reconnect. If that works you can just click on TGC, (left open), after reconnecting and it will take you back to where you were in the game.

I have hangups in TGC all too frequently but almost never a misread in the SKyTrak app.

If this is fairly recent it could be your ISP is getting swamped by all the people staying home. Have you noticed if your internet is jumpy or slow?

I will try all of that. However, I am already playing in direct mode. So would internet even matter in TGC once a round is started? And I also live alone, so there is no additional traffic on my internet at the house.

When there is 2 or 3 swings in a row and the dot doesn't vanish, I have had some success in going to the menu, watching a replay, and going back (not as far as closing the interface). Its not 100 percent it will work after I do that, but it works sometimes.

Can you lose the connection with the interface in direct mode?

You can lose connection in any mode, but the top two lights will go red on the unit.

Just so it is clear, are you connecting in direct mode (wifi) or USB? My understanding is that you were using USB, so I suggested a switch to direct. If you have been using direct mode all along, then I suggest switching to USB. Regardsless of that, in order to determine whether there are hardware issues or not, I wouldn't worry about TGC at this point in time. On that topic, there were server issues kicking people off TGC around the world recently

Hey guys, I guess I didnt know the difference between Network Mode (I thought that was wifi), USB, and direct mode. To be clear, I always use USB mode (which I was calling direct mode in previous posts). Next time we play, I will try out direct mode and see if that is any better.

On a related note, I hit 35 shots today in the ST range, not TGC at all. It read all 35 shots with no problem. I know thats a small sample size compared to 2 or 3 guys playing 18 holes of TGC but I found that interesting.

What mode do you guys play in, and why?

You don't have hardware problems.. Sounds like tgc specific connectivity issues.

I've barely had mine a year and it does this mostly when I'm playing TGC2019. I have to quit out and come back in and resume play. Then the camera seems to track shots again. Quite aggravating. Last time this happened to me I was playing with my brother (two players) and when I went back in to resume play his player was gone. So we shut the game down and said f.. it.

Just push the off button on the SkyTrak then push it again to turn it back on then reconnect the Rapsodo/ProTee interface.

DON'T exit TGC. After the Rapsodo interface is reconnected you can resume your game in the TGC course window.

I was having a lot of problem with misreads on puts the other day and tried the fix that someone above mentioned which was to watch replay one time, and then go back to the game. Somehow, that seemed to eliminate the misreads for me for the rest of the round.
