  • Spin misread question.

The more and more I play TGC2019, the more importance I put on my approach shots, especially when using my wedges. One of my major bugaboos is when my SkyTrak misreads my spin... How would I know that the spin is wrong... Lets say I hit a full 54 or 60* wedge... Feels good, nothing out of the ordinary with it. Ball flys the distance I would expect or maybe a bit more, but literally hits a green and just keeps on going... Recap screen says sub 6K spin. I look down at my wedge and I see white paint on the face. I mean come on... I'm ripping the cover off the ball here... It has to be between 10K and 11,500!

Similarly I hit a small chip from 10-20 yards, and i'll get a ridiculous run out on it and I see a spin of 937rpm... I see 937 as a number more often than any spin number when I'm making those chips...

Frustrating when I'm playing in a tournament for sure. This kinda reminds me of how on Uneekor there is a common mis-read spin number that will populate... So I wonder... is 937, that misread number on chip shots for Skytrak?

SkyTrak rarely misreads spin. Are you facing the logo of a nice clean white ball towards the camera on every shot? What kind of ball are you using? (low-spin distance surlyn-cover balls will max out at 6-7K spin with wedges).

Ripping the cover of the ball like that is also likely not good for the longevity of your screen.

I agree. The Vice ball is starting to feel like sand paper... That one is out of rotation... I'll try to attache a picture.

I will confess that I am not regularly facing the logo towards the unit every shot. I use Vice Pro Plus and Srixon Z Star. The Vice is a bit beat up but I have observed this phenomena with any ball.

I wish that ST would misread my spin on my drives lol.

here you go.. .You can actually see it looks like the Srixon is starting to split. There is a very uniform seam on it. Click image for larger version

Those balls would be removed from my rotation well before getting to that state. With your wedges that roughness would really wear the screen down.

The logo or the line absolutely has to be facing the camera, otherwise the SkyTrak looks at the two pictures, sees only a white sphere in each, and has NO WAY to know how much the ball has spun between images. So it guesses, usually wrong. And agree with Dax that you need to stop using balls once they're scuffed that badly.

Got it... These balls will go in the shit pile that I give to my brother when he ultimately loses his tee shots.

I keep a few and use them once in the range to judge how different the range balls are.

Or you could bring a couple fresh range balls home with you and test them on the SkyTrak - might be easier. In general range balls will launch with lower spin, higher launch angle, and lower ball speed.

I think I would get funny looks at my course for taking balls from the range. I have a paper box of balls full at home for testing purposes though and don’t mind donating a few to the course.

Either way, I think there is a use for these garbage balls. Either I give them to my brother, use them for sand practice at my local course, or in some charity matches, use them for the bomber shots once a safe ball is in play. This is kind of similar to how I use my Kirkland balls. I used to use those all the time on my Simulator, but noticed that they lose about 10 yards for my driver and 3 woods, but are fine with everything else. Since I can't change the balls out on the fly in real life, its easier to just use them as a dedicated practice ball for certain kinds of practice.

I think the Kirkland balls spin a bit too much with the driver.

Agree. they do, but there was a test that Rick Shiels did and I think TXG where they measured on Foresight the performance characteristics of the Kirkland Ball, and concluded that with Driver the ball is compressing too much which in turn is reducing the distance of the ball (and as you stated) spinning too much. The ball is perfect for someone with a low ball speed though, as it gives great spin and feel for everything up to 130mph Ball speed

Personally I think TGC2019 greens are way too fast and many have more slope than real courses.
