New Skytrak alignment and calibration help needed

    Hello All,

I just got my Skytrak today. I set it up and am having trouble getting it to read my 7 irons to be anything but a hard left draw. I do have a normal draw, but not that hard left and I know balls are starting a little right based on where its hitting in the net. I can adjust the angle on the skytrak to mitigate the start angle, but the left side spin on this is big and I don’t know how to fix that part. Or is it the mat that I am hitting off of that is causing that hard left spin? I am using a fiberbuilt flight deck as my hitting surface.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

On the Skytrak driving range many others have also seen this. Fades and draws seem ‘extra’. I think this is caused by the flight calculation not accounting for the spin reducing as the ball is in the air. Curious why you just see it in your 7-iron. Do you plan on adding on to your setup? The ball flights on TGC 2019 seem more real to me. The Skytrack reports the numbers and TGC has it’s own calculations.

I doubt this is due to spin decay. It sounds to me like maybe the mat could be grabbing the club head and closing it down. Do you usually take a divot outside?

When did you order you Skytrak brdgolf1? I'm still waiting on mine... how is your 7 iron shots in the range? Maybe the exaggeration is a good thing so that you can work on it? I would love to know if I'm also drawing or just hitting left. It's hard to tell in real life sometimes.

Follow these steps, in particular make sure unit tilt is zero'd out: https://gunghogolf.com/articles/how-...n-your-skytrak

On a properly aligned and leveled SkyTrak, it's just as easy to hit a draw as a fade. Sure, the lack of spin decay in the ball flight model might exaggerate curvature slightly, but the difference isn't extreme (perhaps 10-15% further left/right distance than without spin decay).

Also, note that there are many factors at play indoors that can lead to a pull/draw bias: https://gunghogolf.com/articles/indo...ndrome-skytrak

Indoor Swing Syndrome is a real thing. It does take time getting used to it. My mat does grab the club and if I hit it a tiny fat, the draw is exaggerated. I have holes in my mat and I use a rubber tee that places the ball just above the mat. That gives me a clean strike and a more realistic ball flight.

Most likely a setup or mat issue. Reading spin axis photometrically is fairly straight forward, and likely accurate. Lack of spin decay wont turn a draw into a hook. It will turn a big hook into duckhook., however.

So I have an update on this. its nothing wrong with the Skytrak and everything to do with me. Yes, I was closing the club face down with outside in swing path. And yes, I do take a divot when out on the golf course. The device was reading everything correctly.

As for the order date, I ordered it on Sept. 18th and got it on Oct. 12th. Basically a little less than a month. This thing is awesome. can't wait to log some hours in on this.

Joe35thAve, what rubber tee's do you use? I have seen BirdieTee's out there. Are they any good?

Birdie tees are very good, please note that I have not used them with a Skytrak.

                  More like this: https://a99golf.com/products/2-sets-...1-2-1-3-4-long

It's designed so you can use it to hit off a mat with your own wooden tees. It's flush on the mat so instead, I just put my ball straight on it with no wooden tee and I can get a cleaner strike.

Wow, that's great news - thanks for reporting!! Getting used to swinging indoors is certainly a challenge, but it will pay off in the long run. Glad you got it figured out. It will only get better from here and start to translate into real results on the course.

So the only thing that is still confusing me a little bit about aligning the SkyTrak is, if it is on the right side of my hitting mat do i point it towards the center of my hitting screen ie: 45 degree angle. Or do I point it straight at a 90 degree?

It's best to hit perpendicular into the screen, so the SkyTrak unit will also be roughly perpendicular to the screen (while following the alignment advice in the link I provided above).

The skytrak is aligned when shots that travel down your target line read straight, of course. As such there is really no right and wrong. But as Ron recommends, perpendicular to screen is best. First of all, subconsciously it feels wrong to hit at angle to perpendicular, and may cause you to pull your shots. Its a bit like when you are on the driving range, and the mat is aligned to one target, but you are aiming at another. Second, not aiming perpendicularly, means that the ball flight generated on the sim will go off at a different angle, which ruins the immersion.

If your room is small, you may have significant offset, but it is still the best way to go.

Hi everyone. I am a recent Skytrak owner. I also noticed an immediate improvement when I changed my offset to be perpendicular to the screen. I was also getting baby draws that turned into 30 yard pulls. However when I then also switch over to using WGT, I get strange shot shape results. I think WGT expects that you need to hit to the center of the screen as that is what you are presented when aiming your shot. I noticed that wehn I went back into skytrak and removed the offset, and went back into WGT, the shot shapes were pretty normal. Does this square with what others have seen?

Neither Skytrak unit nor WGT app knows where you are aiming, so all that matters is that your target line is parallel to unit (or maybe at a slight angle if internally miscalibrated, but that is another story).
