  • Sudden crazy spin numbers

    Alright, I've browsed this forum and suddenly started troubleshooting. I was getting great reads, comparable to Foresight with my 7i (150 carry, 5500 spin) Good spin with my wedges, ~8000. Today, no changes whatsover...started showing 3000 with my PW. Okay.... I know when I hit it fat on a fiberbuilt that can cause low spin, crazy distance. I marked my club and hit next shot, with ball mark bottom few grooves, center face...good strike. carried 120 which is what I'd expect. by 3000 spin..

    I know skytrak is supposed to be super accurate with spin...not today. What changed?

    Yes, the unit is zero'd, yes i did gungho alignment. pointed logo at lens. nothing else changed. should I try against a different mat?

    Maybe try cleaning the grooves and switch to a new premium ball just to check. Wedges may look clean but you can get some residue in there and it can really affect the spin

      I dove into some older threads talking about that. I bought some Srixon z stars a week ago, but noticed the glossiness of most of the balls has gone away. Hard to believe that balls go to shit that quickly. But I’ll check the grooves in the morning

    Yeah that clearcoat can come off and don’t even notice it especially if the sim area has low lighting

      You usually don't play more than 100 shots on the course with one ball (not counting putts). So you usually don't even notice the wear of the ball. You can usually play more than 100 shots on a SIM with one ball. In addition, on a SIM the ball is rubbed against the return net or impact screen.

        You you make a good point, guess I should focus too much on the numbers. Can’t be buying new premium balls every week

      Agree on the issue of buying new balls all the time, I pretty much get the 3 piece Kirklands just for this reason, spin is close enough to any other ball. When dicks has the sale on the gamer balls those aren’t that bad either.

        Pure speculation on my part, but I am wondering if sometimes the skytrak is confused by rotational symmetry on some ball markings. For example, confusing a 1/4 rotation and a 3/4 rotation. You may recall the ridiculous TXG review where the skytrak was getting 1/3 of full spin multiple times in a row and they felt it was caused by too much swing speed. Skytrak rarely screws up spin by that much.

          I have a feeling that happens with some regularity when using balls with excessive markings, like the Chome Soft TruVis and the Taylormade TP5 Pix balls. Best to use a plain white ball with a distinct logo towards camera that is easy for software to pick out and determine whether it has rotated say 90 deg vs 180 deg.

            Yeah, I am leaning that way. Long driver Kevin Blenkhorn often commented that he would get 2000 spin on his 8 iron. It seems rotational ball symmetry is more likely during high ball speed with mid/short iron. I am going to guess that there is some type of disambiguity algorithm that tries to sort out rotational symmetry. Could be as simple using ball speed as an arbiter. Ball speed higher than x, assume 1/4 turn. Lower assume 3/4 turn. Also, note that for higher trajectories, slightly different points of view of the ball as the first imager sees more of the top half of ball, and the second lower half. And different spins present different views of the ball. 14000 RPM is a full ball rotation in skytrak, so 8000 rpm is slighly over half, so the lower half of the ball would now be the top half in the second image.
