  • What the numbers mean

    Hi all

Is there anywhere that I can find not just what the numbers mean, but what you are doing to get them. I know all my data, i just don't know what it means. For example, if i have 600 side spin with an arrow pointing to the left, does that mean my club face was closed to the path? Or is it something else?

I would love to have a really comprehensive guide.

    Thanks
    Phil

That's correct. If you click on the side spin display number on the app, it will switch to Spin Axis, and Total Spin (instead of Side Spin and Back Spin), which is a truer representation of what's going on with the ball (a spinning ball has only one spin rpm and axis). Side Spin means practically nothing without taking into account the amount of Back Spin and doing a % calc in your head.

For example, Side Spin of 800 with a wedge will barely curve the shot, while Side Spin of 800 with driver will see major curvature.

Spin Axis, on the other hand, is very informative and translatable across the bag: 0-2 degrees - straight shot, 3-5 degrees - baby draw/fade, 6-15 degrees - bigger draw/fade, 16-24 degrees - major draw/fade, 25+ degrees - go get some lessons (unless you're practicing Justin Thomas' tee shot on 18 at The Player's).

And for a back of the napkin calculation, each degree of spin axis curves the ball 1.2% of distance travelled. A 160 yard carry baby draw 7 iron with 4 degrees of negative spin axis will move the ball 8 yards left, so you need to aim that far to the right of your intended target.
