OK, not finished yet and just showing a wide open aperture, needs the detailed cut-out for full ball protection following testing by Wev (happy do do some testing too if you provide me with the cut-out dims Wev?). I need to put some location pegs in the base to locate in the tapped holes plus some toggle clasps to hold the lid on. Other major thing is to add some wings on the base plate to take adjustable feet. I may put a row of smooth bore holes in the top to stack some tees along too. Last thing is I might set in a steel strip in the lid for a magnetic level and laser (I know the level calibration will be invoked soon, but best to get it as close to a possible I would've thought) Thoughts from the guys that are using theirs on a daily basis (i'm not currently).

I was planning on all 6mm thick Lexan (at least i think thats whats leftover from my Macquarium project). It machines nicely and will take a thread. All fittings/fasteners will be stainless. I might have to fit a SS bush for the feet as I dont think an M6 thread in Lexan will stand up to too much adjustment.Comment

In that case you should not copy Wev's design. He uses 6mm steel and has to leave the LED flash area open. He can also afford to have the hole bigger then required because of the strength of the steel plate. I will send you the original drawing via PM. That is more optimized for a transparent front made of plastic.Comment

I haven't copied it at all. The only openings (other than for cameras/sensors) are for power button and USB connection. I'm pretty sure than 6mm lexan will take a golf ball as hard as you can hit it at point blank.

Wow, you've put some work into that! I just used davray's measurements and altered them to suit the steel plate cutting process. Still not had chance to put it together yet.Comment

Well, its not taken me too long. I just need to finalise a couple of bits so I can make sure dims are correct and then I can produce 2D drawings and start machining. The main thing I am concerned about is the relative position of the lasers and IFR/Camera array to the base threaded holes, since these need to be tied together to align it. I want to check that my Skytrak model is correct first with the positions from the edge I guess.

Great design bennyg211! Are you concerned that mounting a level to the exterior of the case may measure whether the case lid is level more than whether the unit itself is level? Are you able to machine/assemble the Lexan precisely enough to ensure the top of the case is identical to the level of the unit? With the top being clear, perhaps a level on the unit top would be a fraction more accurate yet still visible.
I am building a hybrid Lexan and plywood case, and I can't get the tolerances close enough to be sure the case top is identical to the unit. I am planning to put the level on the unit, beneath the Lexan lid. Admittedly, I am no craftsman.

Thanks, it should be plenty level, this will on be done on a calibrated milling machine, I have no worries on that score. I will check the level with and without the top to see if there is any offset that needs to be calibrate out, just in case.Comment

Without looking back I would be hesitant to make or buy anything out of acrylic. A poorly struck golf ball travelling at 100mph that hits that enclosure will undoubtedly shatter it. Lexan would fare much better that is why a sheet of Lexan is substantially more expensive than a sheet of acrylic.Comment
