** Edited: Meant no-reads, not misreads.
I had the same no-read issues that other people have noted and I worked on all the standard issues: ball position, ball height, lighting, background, network, etc.
The fact that my no-reads would be intermittent was super frustrating. The Skytrak would be unreliable for periods of time and when I was about to quit in disgust, it would magically resolve itself.
Then one day I noticed during a period of no-reads that I could hear my hard drive chugging away. I looked at the Task Manager on my PC and I could see that there was a Windows Update happening and even though the hard disk was reading/writing a modest amount (6-10 MB/s), it was at 100% usage. When the Windows Update finished running in the background and the HDD calmed down, the no-reads were gone.
I replaced my SATA Hard Disk Drive with a Solid State Drive (SSD) and the instant improvement was incredible. The no-reads are gone and the disk read/write of 50-100 MB/s hardly puts a dent in the disk usage. Windows (and all other system) can now update all they want and not have an effect on my playability.
I don't think this gets discussed enough in terms of diagnosing no-reads, especially for those that find it intermittent. Now, I'm thinking a SSD should be on the list of system requirements to run ST.
Just an FYI for those out there.
