skytrak - an embarrassment of riches

Reading through all the recent posts I see a lot of speculation that we are perhaps only a few weeks away from having one or more sim options for Skytrak. Indulge me for moment - if e6, pg and tgc became available for Skytrak tomorrow and they were all priced at $1,000 - which one would you buy? P!ease rank order them if you have experience with two or more. Current and past Skytrak owners are encouraged to contribute. Thank you.

Well of course I'll chime in.........

I've played PG and E6, waiting on playing TGC.

PG is by far and away better than E6.

E6 pricing (assuming no cloud) is $1600 for 16 courses if you want pebble, st. andrews, ect, those packs are extra $$.

PG will be a lease/rental running $249/year. There are 12 or so courses now (about 4 of them real life courses). There are other courses waiting to be released, I'd love to try them, but no such luck.

TGC is well regarded. I'm waiting to try it, so hopefully soon I can add my 2 cents here too. Not sure if the pricing is confirmed yet so I don't want to state something not factual. There will probably be both a lease/rental and outright purchase. I'd be curious to know if you purchase TGC if there's a chance to re-sell it down the road. Is the license transferable? I have heard if you decide to buy an ES16 or GC2 that you can transfer it to those platforms. Again, not 100% sure.

Protee said earlier, i think it was in skytrak tgc, that tgc is transferable. My fear is that there will not be a outright purchase of tgc for skytrak. With all the stuff skygolf was doing to get a piece of every cake i wouldn't be suprised if there will be only a monthly or yearly fee available so skygolf keeps getting there $. If there is a outright purchase i will get tgc Day one. Definatly better then E6. It's important for me that you can play offline as well, for that reason only pg is not an option for me. It looks great but no offline play.

.. and we say it again. SkyTrak will offer you 2 TGC purchase options. An outright purchase @ $995 and a lease/rental @ $595 per year for max 2 years.

TGC is transferable. Your outright purchase can be transferred anytime and your leased version after 2 years.

Don't forget we will run a forum-user-early-adaptor-waiting-so-long-cash-back program for a limited period of time on the outright purchase price only!

not sure you've got it Alienator? The yearly is only for two years and then you own it. Its a way of not having to shell out the full amount in one go. It works out costing you a little more overall, but is an option if you don't have the lump sum initially.

Its just personal opinion but I still feel those prices are pretty much double what I expected. I just cant justify spending that much on software for home personal use. I understand plenty of people will but Im sure they also pull in 3x plus more a year than I do. I was hoping to have some simulator option for my in home winter practice but at that price point Ill just use the total crap skytrak software and practice then go to the indoor range to play sim round. Its 15$/hour to play on a gc2 on the range or courses its just that its a 10 minute drive instead of stepping into my garage.

I guess it's how you define value. For a shop selling the aim at $15 per hour, 8 hours a day and 7 days a week they've almost paid for the cost of the software in a week. Being conservative you could say that after taking into account down time, non-booked hours etc, then it will have paid for itself comfortably in 3 months.
As a home user, if you wanted 2 hours of sim twice a week then you would've paid for the software in 4 months, plus he unit and software still has value at the end of the day. You could expect 60-70% of your initial capital outlay back should you want to sell.

TGC hands-down. Simulator friendly course library keeps growing, simulator friendly features keep increasing. Great support.

I'm up for the "forum-user-early-adaptor-waiting-so-long-cash-back". Being British I would even stick a Bloody in-between the So and the Long

ProTee United, this might be an unfair question but can you give us any sense of timing regarding ultimate availabilty? Your resurfacing regarding comments on pricing for Skytrak is very encouraging giving me some hope that TGC for Skytrak's release is imminent--am I being overly optimistic?

They are all good choices and easy to try first-hand so one can decide for themselves.

TGC/PG are less mature than E6. There's good and bad about that.

Both PG and TGC are great! Course library keeps growing, features keep increasing, great support. Who knows about tomorrow...but both TGC and PG are constantly improving.

PG has had a stronger design philosophy to simulate real golf. So their game and sim version is exactly the same. TGC however has two different versions. It will be interesting to see 5-10 years down the road which approach produces a better sim.

I've found the TGC course library contains a LOT of courses not worth playing. Apparently it is easy to auto generate one and (incredibly) there is no way to delete courses once published. Even good designers can have more junk courses than good ones against their name. Even so, TGC today has many more playable courses than PG. PG will have a lot more once their user made courses come online but not sure when that will be.

Also I'm finding there is a certain "sameness" about the look of TGC courses after a while. PG courses seem more varied. It's interesting to compare the same course in both, I find PG course more visually interesting and realistic in all cases.

I also find TGC more like a video game than PG. Flaming orange ball trails, in your face HUD, dominating green grids, console type FOV, etc, etc. Fidelity to real golf isn't that great but some like it, others don't. People coming from the old Protee software probably are used to it since that always looked like a video game IMO. (I tried to talk my wife to upgrade from the Optishot to the old Protee once...when she saw the graphics she said yuck it looks like a video game! I said yeah but the ball flight is way more accurate. She said, I don't care it looks like a video game!).

Both PG/TGC have their weirdness about ball physics and stuff but both are quite playable today and will only get better.

PG runs fine on my old computer, TGC is a dog even with all settings set to absolute minimum. So there might be a hardware cost factor to consider also.

Everyone should try them all and decide for themselves. Hard to go wrong with any of them.

Probably easiest to buy the pc game of each. They are around $20 or $30 as i recall. That gives you the main features/characteristics of each and is enough to know if you'll like or dislike one versus the other. Just make sure that if you really don't like some aspect of tgc that it hasn't been changed in the sim version.

MrHogan, don't quote me on this 100%......... But I believe both will have demo's/trials so you can try before you buy.

Again, this is what I think is coming.

How about when comparing online tournament play and the different tours available? I'm totally confused about the current options available as much of the sticky content on this site is outdated. Is there a post that includes the current options for tour and online play? Old stickies that are no longer relevant should be removed before skytrak gets these sim options to reduce confusion for the masses.

Let's start with recognizing that the only software released to the public and not in beta test mode and availble for purchase, is TGC and E6. Those are your current options for tour and online play.

Please correct me if I'm mistaken.

You are absolutely correct. I have been playing the PG beta for 3 months now including tournaments and challenges. Works great.
As Faulty already stated, PG is by far the most realistic simulator software you can get today. Released or not.
If we are lucky they will keep it as beta for a few more years so we can continue to play it for free:-)

PG is available for sale and released to the general public. The "beta" nature is pure semantics and only means people get to play for $20 versus $1000 for TGC. A huge plus. There is otherwise no relevance since it is fully stable and ready. I'm hoping it stays in "beta" forever! When PG comes out of beta and a final price is established we'll all have to decide whether to stay with PG or switch over to TGC.

PG also has a thriving online community with full online tours and weekly challenge events etc. It has automatic scoring, live leaderboards, online stats, chatrooms etc. Certainly seems to have everything one would need but since I'm not into the online side of things I can't really comment further. Davray666 is active on the PG tour so if he says it works great then I'm sure it does. I believe TGC has something similar but someone else would have to comment on that. I think E6 does as well. So all three allow online play and tours.

Yes, PG is online with full tourneys, Long Drive and Closest to the Pin challenges. I have been playing since December 12th. It's only available via GC2 and you must commit to participating to being allowed the full sim features.

I have read the TGC Tours is working on cloud based API and full stat features. This is currently already available through Perfect Golf.

I would love to try/demo TGC so that I can comment on the ball physics, courses, playability, ect. Very strange that I can buy TGC for my GC2 but there's no Demo or Trial. Due to that fact, if I had to make a choice today, it would be Perfect Golf.
