    1st time

After months of researching options I finally got a Skytrak. Set it up with a Country Club Elite 5x5 mat and Net Return Pro. Yesterday was my 1st time using it and I need some help.

    1. Does distance from impact point to net matter? I'm not sure if it was just me getting warm but 7i only had 150y carry. Backed mat up from net a few more feet and got distances I'm used to seeing with 7i (173y). I'm hoping it wasn't distance because I don't want to be too far from net in garage with a nice car nearby.

    2. Driver. WTF? I've scoured this forum and can't make sense of driver issues. Some say no issue, others report issues. I was getting 200y drives that probably didn't go higher than 25ft. Never do that in real world. Also having issue where Skytrak on edge of my mat means with driver I have to stand off the mat. What are best tips to getting semi accurate results? I'd like to use Skytrak to compare different settings on my driver.

Thank you in advance to any and all help.

I can comment on the carry with the 7 iron. We all have had issues with swinging indoors. It takes a while to get used to it and there is a tendency to not swing as hard. You may have swung more freely or just connected better when you moved your mat away from the net.

From what I know of SkyTrak, it does not care how close or far you are from the net. In your situation, I'd move closer to the net so the Lambo or Ferrari doesn't get hit.

Driver distance issues, join the club.

I'm guessing that you need to have the skytrak on a firm surface and especially not on a cce mat. The mat is great but it's soft so you have to hit your irons clean or it will take off your carry yardage. As far as the driver, high swing speeds and lower body torque could shift the mat enough for a ball to slightly shift so the sky trak, or even a gc2, to cause a misread.

Before you conclude that the irons are short with skytrak - take it to an indoor range and have an honest go with your irons. You may find as I did that you are 10 yards longer at the range than you are at home. Overtime I started swinging freely at home and now I see no difference. You really need to test it. As for the driver - 200 yards (assuming like most adult males you're 240plus) sounds very short. But again - have a go at a range to be sure.

If ultimately you can't get the driver to register more than 200 yards, you, like several others, may have a defective unit. Return it and have skygolf send another. Good luck - its a solid launch monitor especially for the price.

About 60% of all users have initial issues. Unless you've used an indoor simulator before, your not going to go at it as hard as you would on the course.
2 Things - don't put the skytrak on the same surface your hitting off of........put it on something that's 100% level (2x4 - with some 3/4 plywood).
2nd - your distance is fine at 7 feet. Swing free and don't hold back, jump out of your shoes if need be.

As for the driver........what's your spin number? I'm getting about 40 yards more on my GC2 then I got on my skytrak and I had a good unit. Granted that was before the last update.

Lastly, make sure your on the current firmware. Good luck, have fun and enjoy. Sim should be out soon.

Luv, interesting to hear you say you're getting about 40 yards more on your GC2 then you got on your good ST unit? Able to share or maybe shed any light on why you think it's the case? Thanks.

I'm not sure doublebogey, I had issues after 1.80 with distances. It was hard for me to get driver past 220. Again, I never had version 2.1.1 so maybe that version was better. Tough to say cause I don't have a skytrak to compare to my GC2. I get carry on my GC2 over 250. Never, I mean never other than when I first got it did I get ball flight like that.

First and foremost, thank you so much for all the quick responses and great feedback.
Session 2 was already much better.

          - Moved closer to net, no holding back, distances much more accurate. Wish I had Ferrari to worry about hitting....
          - Moved Skytrak onto a few stacked tiles. They are next to mat and are as close to same height as mat as I can get. Felt numbers were very reliable.
          - First great moment from having this.... Made some adjustments to my R15 3 hybrid based on numbers and voila 15yds more carry!
          - Very pleased with the practice session with 56-3hybrid. Those that felt flush showed as expected. Pulls pulled and a shank shanked. Can't ask for better there.

          Negative:
          - Can't get anything reliable with anything involving a tee. Hit 3w flush off the deck 230-240 carry. Hit 3w flush off short tee and it shows about 200-215yds.
          - Driver? Forget about it. 200-235yds with spin under 3,000.
It's brand new non demo, so I would hope it's not a bad unit. Maybe stack a couple more tiles based on height of tee? I'd love to have some discovery with 3W and Driver like I did with
          3hybrid.

Overall through 2 sessions, despite issues with driver, I'm quite pleased. Again, thanks for all the input.

I actually don't think you have a defective unit. I think there is a good number of us w smack on iron distances but drivers or shots off tees coming up a bit short (even w latest firmware, app and on WGT).

This has been posted often and to me it's a joke that it has to be like this but.................tee it up 1" behind the laser. That might help you out.

This is a fail that is has to be done like this for some drivers.

I second placing the ball behind the laser. I too was having completely off distances and then I read about ball placement and that seems to have fixed most of my issues.
For me I'm about 155 carry with a 7 iron that is 32degrees Nike vapor speed gi irons. For me placement goes like this.
9 iron is right on the laser then I move the ball about 1/4 of an inch or so for each club after that. For shorter clubs ie pw gap wedge I move it closer to the target to about 1 inch in front for my 60degree. I get the ball about 2 inches behind the laser with my driver 1inch with my three wood and hybrid and half inch or so with my irons up to my nine. These seem to work best for me, I'm sure everyone's ball speed wil dictate their best ball placement spots to get the best consistent reads.
Tee height can also be an issue. I tee the ball with a 460cc driver to have about 1/3 of the ball above the top of my driver. A friend tees his up with about 2/3s of the ball above the top of the driver and we have to put a 1 inch price of plywood under the skytrak to get it to read good for him.

Experiment with ball placement is my advice and if you figure out how to get it to register short chips like 3-10 yard carry low bump and runs ect let me know because I can't get it to read them at all. I can practice those in my hallway I guess but I would like to get a feel for them on the skytrak before sim software hits.

Ya, it's frustrating to have to go through this. Hate to keep saying this.......but with the GC2, we don't have to do any of these adjustments. I feel for you guys, I went through it too.

Alienator, that's a good suggestion raising ST a bit if you tee it high (which I do). So will try that. But then would be pain in the @** to be raising it for driver and lowering it for other shots 14 times every 18 holes of sim.

#1 definitely do not have skytrak on the hitting mat it must be vibration free.

#2 I assume you have the R15 white headed driver apparently at higher swing speeds it gets into the picture and interferes hence the need to move the ball back with the driver so just the ball is captured.

#3 tee height, I have the ball tee'd MASSIVELY high to reduce backspin I also have the M1 driver so it has a white stripe too but I can still tee up on the laser dot. My ball speed is 140mph so I don't see the high speed issue.

Must be the angle but it's approximately same height give or take 5mm. I now use the case which has adjustable feet. I think I'm hassle free because of my regular ball speed.

That's the highest tee height I've ever seen!

And I hit up on my driver around 4-5*, but that's just crazy. I guess if you're not hitting huge push fades, go for it.

Today's session focused on driver and the various recommendations from community.

The closest I could get to accurate driver distances was by stacking 2 extra tiles under the Skytrak. Even height with mat got carries of 200-215yds. 1 extra tile got carries of 220-235. 2 extra tiles got 235-250 carry. 3 extra tiles and I couldn't get a shot to capture. I moved ball at and behind laser, but most significant data changes were from height of ST unit.

I think the issue is coming from calculation of club speed. By no means am I going to pretend I'm some long drive champion, but I know I'm longer off the tee than what is captured on Skytrak. On Trackman at my club, my driver clubspeed was between 108-117. On Skytrak I didn't see one over 104. That's even after emptying the garage and going all out. Maybe the mat is moving just enough on these swings to alter the results. Getting closer, but still not there.

Skytrak doesn't measure club speed, only ball speed. However I am interested to see what @skytak says about raising the unit for those that tee their drivers high, as I do.

ST displays club speed so it must estimate it from something? Obviously ball speed is one input - what else?

I think they just use a standard smash factor (1.47 rings a bell?) and apply that to the ball speed, that's all. There is no way to account for the strike, whether you hit it pure or thin bullet or fat. Obviously you know if you hit it off, so you have the option to delete the extreme strikes and just look at the useful average data.

Smash factor must be a variable because on wedges ball speed is less than club speed. Perhaps smash factor is driven by backspin. Don't really know. Not sure it matters either.

They used to use a constant 1.48, but now it has been adjusted per club, I believe. I think it's probably just a set smash factor for each club you select, but I don't know that for sure.

club selection does not effect any of the measurements. machine doesn't know or care what you are hitting.

Not so sure that you are correct regarding smash factor. Hit a seven iron with driver selected and one with pw selected and see if your club speed varies for two shots with the same ball speed
