    Skytrak Inside vs Outside

So I haven't been able to get my Skytrak working in my basement. I was sure it was defective, but when I took it to the range, sure enough, everything worked fine. I have had a couple of theories about why the basement isn't working, but none of them have panned out so far.

One theory was that the lighting in my basement is somehow effecting things. But, I have tried in normal light, just CFL, just Halogen, and almost total darkness. Nothing seems to make a difference.

Another theory was my mat. I have a mat that I hit off of with some anti-skid stuff underneath it. I thought maybe the slight twisting of mat when I swing was the cause of the problem. But, then I hit straight of my padded carpet, and that doesn't seem to change things either.

I am by no means a great golfer, but I know when I hit a decent shot. In my basement, my farthest carry with a 6 iron (19 shots) was 111 yards, with an average of 95 yards. At the range, my shortest carry was 117 yards with a six iron, with an average of 139. Looking that the numbers, the launch angle is reading at 2.55 degrees higher in my basement, the ball-speed is averaging 20 mph slower, and the backspin was 1000 rmp's higher in the basement.

I understand that sometimes it takes some getting used to swinging inside and that could be the cause. I have been using my basement, with an almost 10 ft ceiling, for 3 years to swing in. I am pretty comfortable there, and I would like to think it isn't me changing my swing from the range to inside. But who knows? It could be that I am. I might be trying too hard in the basement, which could be throwing off the swing. Since I am not a great golfer, I hit plenty of bad shots. But, when I hit one pure (and I did a number of times in the basement), I know my 6 iron should carry a lot more than 111 yards.

The numbers just seem so different that I am hoping that there is some outside factor that I can fix to make things work. I attached the numbers from the range and basement if anyone sees anything there that could be helpful. I'm going to keep working at trying things out, but if anyone had any suggestions, I am all ears.

    Thanks for the help!

Those are big differences....when hitting outside, is that off grass or a mat? If a mat, is it one of the typical hard rubber mats that bounce a club through impact a lot? Skytrak is leveled and at the correct height?

The spins numbers are really low. Spin should ideally be 5400-6500rpm. I understand the mat will generally cause a decreases of 500-1000.

If skytrak is up to date, and is preoperly leveled, and we look only at the data, and only having that as a reference, I would consider the following:

The strikes are fat, and you are seeing the effect of the mat at home greatly decrease the ball speed and its not as forgiving as the mat at the range. The spin numbers don't equate to clean strikes, nor do the ball speed numbers.

Both of the numbers (range and basement) were off of a rubber mat except probably for the last 7-8 in the basement that were off of my carpet. But, basically the hitting surface was apples to apples. I have played around with the height of the Skytrak unit. I have the protective case for it, and everything seems to be at the correct level. I have the latest version of the app on iOS and installed the firmware release that came out the other day.
      Thanks!

your getting higher launch off your mat at home, are the 2 mats the same? is it possible to bring your mat to the range to use?

your mat at home might be affecting the performance of the ball and club interaction. I highly recommend the CCE mats, I have a stance mat and hitting strip.

Getting a CCE mat will do the opposite. It'll reduce your yardage indoors even more. As soon as the clubhead starts interacting with the turf, it grabs real hard. CCE mats are better for practice, but not for sim use.

      lol this guy ^^^

what the CCE mat does is teaches you the importance of hitting the ball not the turf before the mat, so my question to you is, do you want to get better at hitting the ball or hitting the mat before it. so if you hit the mat before it right now it doesnt matter if you have turf grass or concrete

That's why I said CCE was better for practice. I have one, and use it every day for practicing ball striking. I have another mat that's similar to the Dura-Pro for use with the simulator.

Do you have any friends who are pretty decent golfers (10 handicap or better) that could hit in your basement and give you some feedback on the numbers?

I don't think so unfortunately, but that is a good idea. I will see if I can come up with anyone.

I noticed the same problem from start. I was absolutely sure that I didn´t hit it fat. During last week I used a short tee avoiding the club to hit the mat.
I´m surprised, + 10 meter! And saddly Indoor swing is a bit shorter than outdoor, the follow thorugh aint the same since the target is to Close. Takes time to get a powerful swing Indoors.

Rubix, your write up sounds a lot like mine from last june: http://golfsimulatorforum.com/forum/...oblems-indoors
I doubt I can solve this, but I can add to the discussion. In the end, I spent too much time trying to figure out why this was happening and too little time on my game. My conclusion is that there is nothing wrong with my Skytrak. To complicate matters, I've been working very hard on swing changes that have probably added 25% to my carry (I quit playing for years and started back up last year. I'm 54 - it's been a real challenge. I had around 4000 shots on the unit last year.

I have a few possible explanations in my case:

      1) wind. I noticed the range where I practice is frequently down-wind. Last year, I didn't really pay enough attention to it. In fact, this spring I was there and specifically noticed it was dead still. I thought I'd be busting irons way past what I was seeing in my basement this winter. Nope. I think some of this is because I'm putting a lot more back-spin on shots now too.

      2) my swing. I was also pretty comfortable hitting in my basement. But the mind is a complicated thing. I suspect it made a bigger difference than I thought. I was more analytical in the basement and I think that slowed my swing down. Also, even though I have clearance for the most part (my driver will scrap the ceiling sometimes), I think it may have slowly flattened my backswing. That's one of the corrections I'm making: trying to avoid a shallow-to-steep swing (over the top loop)

      3) the mat. I tend to hit a little behind the ball. The monster mat I use will eat up the club while the hard, flattened out range mats are less punishing.

Once I gave up on all this and started working on my swing and believing the Skytrak, good things started to slowly happen. I carried a 7 iron 152 this week (indoors) and I haven't been able to do that for 20 years. When I look at a graph that trends my distances, it just keeps going up

      Good luck!

Reading through your post, it seems exactly like mine issues. It sounds like over time you were able to get the readings to be accurate indoors, so hopefully I will be able to do the same I guess.

I had a very similar experience to the one dsailer described. I confirmed my ST distances were pretty close to the outdoor range, but consistently about 5 yards or so short. When I started seeing similar results with a gc2 at an indoor range, I finally admitted I was hitting a tad fat on my cce mat and on the mat at the indoor range. I worked hard to eliminate that flaw and have picked up ten yards per club. It was my swing, not the launch monitors. Keep at it Rubixcube and I bet you'll get there.

When I tested my gc2 at the range I noticed that the range balls don't spin anywhere close to my pro v1's at home. These are nice range balls but the spin rate was 3500 range vs 6000 with game balls.
Just something to consider if you were using different golf balls..

Most range balls are also reduced ball speed. Just another way they design them to reduce total flight, so that driving ranges don't actually need 300+ yards of clear space.

Ie...never judge anything except maybe shot shape by range balls. Everything else can usually be ignored....regarding launch numbers.

I agree. The problem is that Skytrak says I am hitting the range balls significantly farther than I am with my good balls in my basement.

Use a few balls that you've found or older ones that you don't care donating. Go to a range and laser something so you know the distance. Make sure both the club and balls are clean. Then test, if it reads accurately, shot shape and distance, the unit is fine and you know you have a problem indoors and it's not the unit.

I don't think it is the unit. The readings at the range were good. I think it is something in my basement that is messing with the readings.

I tried my ST at the range a week ago and it was a disaster. It was sunny and I could not get good reads on most shots. Hit some beautiful draws and the unit would have a completely different ball flight. Not sure I will use it on the range again. I know the sunlight and possibly the range balls I was using was not really helping matters much. Inside, the distances are pretty spot on, but I question the ball flight. I like to hit draws and I know my swing is in good shape right now. On the range I hit great shots and it seems in my simulator the ball tends to pull all of the time.

Yes I have had similar issues on bright days at range. I used an umbrella to create a shade over the unit and the ball area but does not seem to help. In fact I had a guy test my ST and he hit a perfect draw 234 yards but ST shows it was a slice? It must the be sun as on non-sunny days I see less of these problems.

The distances don't bother me quite as much as the shot shape. Because I tend to try to "fix" things if the shot shape is not what I'm expecting or wanting. And I don't want to spend hours indoors getting a swing that reads properly to take it outdoors and be completely off. So far that hasn't been the case. My outdoor game has improved with the use of SkyTrak ESPECIALLY my putting speed. I haven't putted this well in quite a while and definitely since I started playing again after a decade-plus layoff.

Check your mat, I had a monster mat and that thing is a POS for hitting anything realistic. I'm a 9 handicap in real life and know my distances. I was consistently shorter with the monster mat. I bought a CCE from Costco and all my distances went back to normal. Probably up 10-15%.

I'm surprised, I'm around the same handicap and have the monster mat as well and have had no issues and been very pleased with it. Distances all seem dead on and nice and long. We are hitting the ball before the mat anyway on good shots so wouldn't think the mat should effect much, haven't tried the CCE though

I said the same thing, but it made a huge difference going to the CCE vs monster mat. I think it's called the monster mat? it's the 199 mat you can get on Amazon. The CCE mat also feels like a real driving range mat with good stable foot support vs the spongy monster mat.

So you replaced this SuperMat w a CCE? Just curious as I have a CCE but this mat (as least per description) sounds just like the CCE (but maybe just a tad less thick) but at 1/4th the price.

This is the monster mat. I bought my monster mat a couple of years ago and when I click on this item on amazon it shows I bought it previously. I have both and this is nowhere near as dense as cce. Very squishy under your feet.
