  • My potential setup, a few questions

Been lurking for a while here, and now that my first born is due any day now, I figure I better get a sim setup so I don't lose all my skills since my golf time will be severely reduced.

I'm going to go with the Skytrak + TGC setup with a projector and impact screen (might use an old white comforter? Will that work?
Will be in my garage. Plenty of height, 19 feet long and about 9.5 feet wide (my side of garage)

Now, I read a post that I can't seem to find, where someone has TGC running off a computer from inside their house and somehow has bluetoothed it through to their projector in the garage. The wife has been on board with us getting a new iMAC desktop computer for the family. If I can use this, I won't have to buy a separate PC for my sim room. Is this doable?

The desktop will be about 20 feet away (through a floorboard) from the projector. Router sits in between the two so it shouldn't have trouble getting a strong signal.

Is this doable? I will still need an ipad right? My wife has a newer one that I think I can use.

Sorry for all the questions, just reading around here getting the most knowledge as possible before I start my room!

Looking forward to joining the tour on here in a few months, really excited!

    Thanks!

I might be wrong but not sure tgc runs on Mac. I have the same setup in the garage but have a gaming laptop Asus rig and has a wifi booster coming Ito the garage.

Ok gotcha...Yea looking on their site it doesn't look like it supports mac, just "steam". I already have an xbox 1, does anyone run it through there instead of a PC?

Don't need an ipad since you will need a good computer to run tgc. Unless you want to take skytrak outdoors or to a range, then the ipad will be useful.

My PC is located inside my house and my sim in the garage. I got longer cables to go to keyboard, mouse and display.

so you have wires from your pc in the house running out to your garage? wonder what a wireless keyboard/mouse would do? wonder if it would reach.hmm..sorry for all the questions, just trying to plan this out in my head before I attack this beast lol

Yes, my PC is inside my house on an adjacent wall, so they aren't running all that far. i think i have 25' cables to the monitor, keyboard and mouse and then a i think a 40' hdmi to the projector.

I have long HDMI and a USB cable with a USB hub attached ran from the basement where the PC is to garage where the sim is. HDMI to projector. USB hub connects skytrak and Bluetooth dongle for the rii mini keyboard. Works like a charm, but it all depends how easy it is to wire up.

What's the best route to go for a CPU on a budget? Used? Refurbed? Sole purpose will be sitting in the garage running the TGC software and Skytrak. I know it needs to be powerful but does anyone have any suggestions or deals?

I built my gaming rig by searching for deals on www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/

The CPU wasn't really the key, I use an i5, but I splurged on the video cards, there's some really good Nvidia ones coming out and it will put downward pricing pressure on older 970, 980 cards that you need to run TGC. You've starting looking at a really good time.

You really want to have something built for gaming with a higher end graphics card. GTX 970 TI or better to get the best visual experience.

Without knowing your budget here is what I use... Dell XPS 8500 with upgraded EVGA 750 B2 Bronze PSU, Intel Core I7 3.4 GHZ CPU, 16GB Ram, 256 SSD and EVG GTX980TI FTW Gaming ACX 2.0 and it runs TGC like a champ without any glitches. There are much newer and faster gaming machines out there but hopefully this gives you a baseline of what to look for.

I tend to agree with Sledge in recommending a high-end purpose-specific machine. When you consider the cost of the ST itself, and of sim software, economizing on the computer hardware might not be logical if you're hoping for an optimized experience. Consider, too, that future sim programs, and updates to existing ones, are likely to require more computing power rather than less, so you may not want to start out with the bare minimum for an enjoyable experience today.

As an aside, Nvidia recently released new graphics cards, the Geforce GTX 1070 and 1080, so-called "Pascal" cards which are significantly more capable than their other cards which are still being sold. They are currently in short supply, but may be worth considering in conjunction with any new purchase. They are expected to be integrated into gaming laptops later this year, perhaps in September, providing or exceeding what is currently top-shelf desktop graphics performance in a laptop form factor.

I'm curious to see what the new prices will be in September for 970m/980m gaming laptops that will be considered older generation.

A GTX 1060 was introduced as well supposedly giving you slightly better than 980 performance while only costing $250. The power requirements are supposedly lower too, so there's some potential for additional upgrade savings by not having to buy a more powerful power supply.

Awesome information guys. I'm in no hurry right now so maybe I'll just be patient for some deals on the pc side of things. Think I might build my pc and buy separate parts as some others have suggested to cut down on costs. That way I can pick and choose where to spend more.. Really excited to get this going!!!

Question. My wife is on board with us getting a new desktop. She wants an iMAC however and I don't think there is anything going to change her mind. First off...what are my options? Tried to do a little research on the boards and there isn't too much recent information on this. Will TGC even run on an iMAC on it's lowest settings? Saw some posts on here that it does. I want to put up screen in my garage with projector, thinking I will need apple TV since my imac will be inside. Is this doable?

imac specs are : 2.8GHz Processor
            1TB Storage

            • 2.8GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor
            • Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz
            • 8GB of onboard memory, configurable up to 16GB
            • 1TB hard drive1
            • Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200
            • 1920-by-1080 sRGB display
I will upgrade to 1TB fusion drive, and go 16GB ram.
            Will that graphics card work?

            Thanks for any help!

Another good reason to get separate machines is the fact that you wouldn't be able to play on the sim while she's using it. Isn't that the perfect time to get a round in anyways - while she's occupied?

Let me know if this is a good price for this and if I could/should downgrade anything to save a few extra $$. This is all new and he has a facebook page, seems pretty reputable. local to my area.

Looks like TGC recommends at minimum a 600W cooler. Might have to upgrade that.

Intel graphic cards are not considered gaming cards. Here is a link to give you an idea of its performance compared to the recommended GTX970:

Great, is $650 a good price for that computer I listed?
