  • SkyTrak - USB or WIFI - which is better for a PC sim setup

I've seen bits and pieces around the forum, but haven't found a firm position.

My sim is set up and I have little cause to take my ST anywhere other than my basement. I've had it connected via USB, it just stays wired all the time. I've never had a battery issue.

I do get non-reads though - maybe 1 in 20. (always seems to be that pure hit!) Room is dimly lit with halogen wall sconces. No big deal on the range, but a PITA when in TGC.

Two issues, shot drawing speed and non-reads - any comments?

Yes, I have been wondering about this as well. I have some non- reads but I also have what seems to me miss-reads. That is in particularly with spin and perhaps other parameters, resulting in distance variations. I have tried to orient the ball's logo towards the unit and that seems to help. I have not taken any measurements yet, but there is a wide variation in drawing speed. Normal iron shots draw within a couple of seconds or so, while drives take what seems to be at least twice that long. I hit a near shank the other day and it must have taken 10 seconds to draw. Not really what I expected after reading a lot of reviews and comments. It would be nice to know how others are seeing this.

i have had 3 different units in my possession and have never once witnessed a unit register a shot while connected to any power source, pc or wall.

WHAT???!! Any comment from the manufacturer on that?

Wifi... Mine is connected via wifi and is constantly plugged in to a power strip and I have maybe 1 no-read out of every 100 shots.

Wifi seems like the way to go. It's working better for me than the USB connection did.

What happened when you were on USB?

The device would lose connection mid round.

USB would always go dead once every 10 min or so. 3-4 non reads and then all of the sudden it works normally. Can't figure out why it does this.
WiFi is more consistent, which is quite surprising to me. Going in I thought USB would by far be more accurate.

There are a ton of power saving features that windows has included that automatically shut down USB hubs to save power. No matter how many little options you tweak and set the original ones seem to keep coming back!

I started with USB and recently switched to wifi. Seems a bit quicker and more reliable.

Well I measured time to draw and it was 4.5 to 5.5 seconds for a normal iron shot and 4.5 to 8.3 seconds for driver shots. Longer than I thought. I am using USB connection.
I am trying wifi, but unit will not recognize the network even after reset.

Make sure you are not using a 5g network.

So you can not use a 5g network with skytrak?

I just received my skytrak. I tried to connect it my network wifi and run the software on my desktop pc which is hard wired to the router. I didn't have any luck. Has anyone else tried this?

I'm on usb right now and TGC was pretty much unplayable...I had shots taking up to a minute or more to register...Pretty devastated at the moment

See if you can ping the Skytrak from your PC.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by ping it. Are you referring to connecting to it through wifi on the desktop pc I have it wired to?

It does work on my ipad but my sim room i have setup has a TV in it connected to my desktop which does not have a wifi card in it. I do have a usb wifi dongle on another pc in the house if i must but i figured a wired setup would be the best.

I run both my Skytrak and TGC Gaming computer both on Wifi. It seems to be the best option for me so far.

My computer is hardwired to router and ST on wifi.

I was able to test the skytrak and let it charge a little longer last night and tried again. I think I may have had the ST still connected to the USB into the computer that was hardwired the first time I tried which may have been giving me fits... But a quick test last night and putting around showed quicker shot feedback and a pretty flawless setup... I'll be giving it a better test through the week
