  • Skytrak Armour

Ok, I'm starting this thread to see if protecting the Skytrak box is still a must for some people.

I have read countless posts on this subject and generally feel that this is a need for users. I have owned the Skytrak for a couple of months and agree for the most part. Honestly, it doesn't seem an issue for myself, however I couldn't possibly let my kids, favorite friends, or even a touring pro use it without completely freaking out!!!

My question is this. Is this a need for users that still exists for a reasonable enough amount of people?

I am a manufacturing engineer and have all the available information and software to develop a legit protective case that can make the Skytrak bulletproof. I can integrate leveling devices, locating devices, and alignment aids into the case. Basically whatever a user wants.

I can have these produced at a reasonable cost and shipped to a user. This is what I can do.

I have a desire to this, have started on a prototype for myself, but am really looking for more interest than personal use. Time is a huge motivator for me as I'd rather be hacking away on the TGC. LOL!

If you are interested, please PM me or just reply to this thread so I can get an idea of the need.

Disclaimer: yes I have the Davray sketch and will use some of that information in whatever design I come up with. My plan would be to optimize and improve overall function of whatever case I come up with. I see location, leveling, protection, and consistency of setup being the utmost importance.

  • Hey guys, I've had my original prototype in the shop for an overhaul to the window. I should be able to test it tonight.

    • DirtyGarry24 Hello... I am late to this dance. Is the a cad file or photo of a prototype I can see available.

Hey Wyzyguy - I assume you are wanting to see the latest window? Nothing has changed other than that. I'll post that once I get the order placed. Really just wanting to get the prototype back and test the window so I can get the order placed. Guys have been very patient while I have worked thru some issues. I'll probably up the order so I'll have a few extras in the first batch if you decide to jump on board.

    • This is the original prototype. I've removed the vertical bars from the middle flash area. Those cause bad reads.

      • Hey guys, just got done playing some TGC holes with my proto with the new window in it. Really good stuff. Feeling like my golf game again. I'll continue to test, but I'm confident at this point that this is the one.

I know I'm not the only one that wears their golf game on their sleeves, but between shooting crappy scores in the last tourney and then realizing that my case was contributing, I was beaten.

I've done a lot of research now and am certain that the LED flashers should have no coverage. Going against the old davray sketch was a bad idea. You live and learn.

          • Gary...How has that changed with regard to protection removing those vertical bars? Is the device more vulnerable now?

ST lens still fully protected Kevin. Ball can't touch!

          • I'm not sure what type of cage/net you have, but I have a side return net from the Net Return on my cage. This has helped catch hosel rockets before they hit the walls.

I have the 7' x 5' Net Return. I traded the 8' x 6' (I think) for that one. The bigger one was just too hard to store when not in use as the room is not dedicated.

My brother definitely could use the bigger net! I guess we'll just work on his swing a bit and have him hit foam balls for awhile. At six feet away he was hitting my sheet rock and it wasn't a shank! Wife not happy!

          • Starting the order tomorrow guys. This window is the one!

Played 36 holes of golf this evening. Can now hit all shots and know what is coming. I have no doubts about sending this window and case out to people. Very pleased.

It's a great feeling to be able to play "your" golf game again (good or bad). There are no doubts...

            • Awesome news Gary! Can't wait to try the case out! Putting the extra time in testing and refining definitely was worthwhile.

I couldn't agree more 93civic. I'm actually grateful to have had the issues. Knowing what I know now, I could have caused some real issues for people. At the very least, having that material in front of the flashers is playing with fire. Some people could have issues and some may not. The issues are subtle too so I'm glad I caught them. I'd hate to have cases out there causing people grief and them blaming it on their golf games when that isn't true.

            • Count me in as someone who would like to purchase one of these if you're finally comfortable with the design. I just ordered my ST yesterday and hope to have it next week.

              • Just an update guys. I played a tourney round in TGC this evening and shot 70. My 3 tourney rounds last week were 81/80/80. The difference? Not having to fight the case giving bad reads. Ball flight back to normal (relative) and putts that are not all over the place. I made a few this round which is normal on the sim and in real life. Before it was a 3 degree miss to the left followed by a 3 degree miss to the right. Just not accurate.

                • You can see the proof on my findings about material in the flash area of the ST affecting reads on my latest tour shot recordings. It's all there guys and I encourage you to look.

Tournament of Champions (page 8) was the tourney when I was having all of the bad read trouble. This is proven easiest by looking at HA (direction) on putting. This tourney I had my old window with material in the flash area. I need to add that I always aim with my cursor and essentially hit a straight putt for every putt. A 3 degree miss right followed by a 3 degree miss left putt just isn't reasonable given this setup. Actually having witnessed it, it will drive you crazy. There are many occasions of this during that tourney. Awful.

Sony Open Hawaii (page 1) was last weeks tourney and I played both rounds with my new window. I've removed all material from the flash area. The window is still fully protective. Again, looking at HA (direction) on putting is the easiest way to compare. Over the 36 holes, there are no 3 degree misses in either direction. There are many zeroed out putts through the 36 holes. If I recall correctly, there are only 2 or 3 occasions where I missed 2 degrees in either direction. Also, they aren't back to back. That is acceptable. That is the type of human error that we all see when playing golf. That means the new window isn't affecting ST readings.

Maybe the holy grail for a protective shield is an armour like yours with enough distance/gap between the SkyTrak and the back of face of armour (to be able to absorb all shocks) but an opening in the lens area that can be covered by replaceable cut-out lexan cover - kinda like iPhone case with screen covers?

You may be right doublebogey. I've really tried to stay away from the lexan as that complicates the manufacturing process. I don't know that I'd call it the holy grail, but I feel that people are going to be very happy with my case with this new window. It's 100% protective and doesn't cause bad reads. Also, the ST sits .100" inside the case and I feel that, coupled with the heavy mass, makes it as shock absorbent as it can be. The case weighs approx. 8 lbs.

My daughter toe shanked one into the face of the Armour yesterday and it would have been a death blow without the case. That is what I'm trying to accomplish and am very comfortable with that aspect.
