  • SkyTrack - Full Metal Jacket protection shield

Finally had a chance to finish a prototype of my SkyTrak protection. (I had my last unit take a ball to the IR lens while IN the protective case from SkyTrak - it didn't work again.)

Being lucky enough to own a business with a good bit of sheet metal equipment, and finally the time. (having a party this weekend and need to protect my unit!) The leveling feet need a bit wider spacing, and I need to test that the unit still reads shots. I went with a minimum of openings to try to keep balls from sneaking through the front. I popped off the IR lens so that it's easy to see the parts that need to "see" - I'll obviously be putting it on before testing. Still unsure if I'll screw the unit to the base and leave an air gap, or use foam on 5 sides to isolate the SkyTrak from the steel.

I added a lip in the front so I can drop an alignment rod in for a visual reference.

Holes on bottom need adjustment, and maybe slotting to allow the SkyTrak to be adjusted to the base for alignment.

  • FMJ always in stock - and still requires no tools to adjust the unit with the included bubble level.

Just spin the leveler with your fingers.

Looks great, waiting to order when new version comes. Any idea when?

  • Not sure - there's almost 500 of the current model working well all over the world - kind of reluctant to make a major change and get surprised. We have been making subtle changes with each manufacturing run in an effort to continuously improve. (increased the height of the LED window on the last - helps make it easier to see from a standing position)

Some days it's easy to get jealous of people who make products that can be modified with a firmware update!

True about the Firmware, I was just looking for top protection. Right now, till the fall, I'm hitting into a net. Sometimes the ball cycles up and out.

Got it - I know a lot of folks have just put a piece of foam on top. The wifi radio is just under the white plastic and there's some concern the signal can get degraded.

  • Great job on the FMJ case awisnia. There are times where the legs of the case will rotate when I move the case across the floor to better position my skytrak. I was think of adding a nut on the underside to prevent this. Do you know what size nut I should go with?

doublebogey - Really, higher and higher..just like that? Can you give a little more detail as to how you use the FMJ? The guys at my Gofltec have thousands of hours on theirs and they say it's never happened.

i guess every time I move the ST w FMJ (the way I move it I guess) the legs would turn a bit and after a while I realized my ST is higher vs. the mat than it was before so I just re-screw in and everything is fine... Not a biggie as I actually like that you can adjust without tools (but I guess the downside is it will be slightly loose in this case).

  • Just twist the feet without using tools to make adjustments.

The rivet nut in the base provides 6-7 good threads worth of engagement to keep the sensitive SkyTrak stable.

Originally, we tested just putting a hole in the steel and sandwiching a nut on each side to save cost, but it really had to be snugged down to stay in place.

    • Hi awisnia
just received my Sky Track and FMJ. My question is has anyone experience lower launch angles and about 75% less distance with the Sky Track?
Every single shot has very low launch angles < 10 certainly affecting the overall distance!

      any comments????

You have the ST w FMJ too high vs. the top of the mat?

thefooddr - Never heard that. Can you describe the conditions? Where is the FMJ / Skytrak (floor, mat)? Is the unit properly leveled such that the bubble is in the center of the ciricle? Is the unit at the same height as the hitting surface?

    • Guys,
      Thanks for your comments.
To doublebogey - The unit is flat on the hitting mat. I did not use the legs that came with the FMJ protective case.
Here are 3 pictures of my set up. (FYI the tape did not affect the launch angles)
I did place the level bubble directly on top of the Sky Trak

I am pretty certain if you have the unit sat on the mat it will be too high. My hitting mat is about 10mm higher than the surrounding area. If I place the FMJ on the surrounding area with the feet wound right down it is too high. I have had to removed the feet and use a peice of foam to bring the FMJ to the correct height. will try to upload a pic

He said that he has taken the (legs) leveling feet out. That should work fine - exactly as I do it at home. Forgive if it's a silly question...What happens without the FMJ?

    • My neighbor just shanked a ball off the FMJ case so hard that the ball hit 2 walls and the ceiling. The FMJ doesn't even show a mark and the Skytrak never flinched. Worth every penny! Thank you!!

Further to my comment.........Here are some pics. If I leave the feet in the unit it is too high. I believe the bottom of the sky track needs to be level with the hitting surface.

Thanks for the photos. There's about 3/8' of wiggle room on the level-to-the hitting surface. Indeed, the leveler's zero height can be above the limit. All you need to do is turn over the levelers and use the threads to adjust the height/level. (Or, foam!) Before the foam. did you see ball fight issues with the levelers all the way down? With no levelers? Thanks in advance.

awisnia - I did actually try with the levellers turned right down, just saw that the Sky Trak was higher than the mat so just put the foam on. Works well so haven't bothered changing back.

        Great case though :-)

        Perfect - cheers!

    • To awisnia: I did hit a few ball without the FMJ. I was pretty scared though!!!! The launch angle was not affected by the FMJ. I did contact Sky Trak but they could not come up with a reasonable explanation of why all my shots has such a low angles. The primary reason for my purchase of the ST was to practice / monitoring my ball flights, and not to play golf with the simulator. The fact that the launch angles are low only affect the shot total distance. I can still hone my swing!

That's good news/ bad news. Are you hitting everything at a low launch angle, or is something else wrong? What angles do you get for a 6 iron versus a 9 iron, for example?

    • I have used from a 7 to my driver. 80% of my launch angles are less than 10. Fortunately on the course my ball flight and distance are right on what I am expecting to be. The monitor / simulator has help me groom my draw and allowed me to kit ball every day which keeps me in the groove! I can honestly said that it has help me to develop a consistent approach to hit the ball. the FMJ is a life saver. I would have broke the Skytrak the very first day!!!!!!

Good words on the FMJ, but I'm still concerned that it reads everything at low launch angles..

    • OOPS - let the eBay availability get to zero (we've got plenty) It's been relisted.

We're at 499 now, will you be the one to order #500?

Only needing Vermont, New Mexico and Alaska for the full 50 (Saskatchewan would be a bonus, too)

          Sweet! Enjoy.

      • I ordered an FMJ case and received it yesterday. I made an account on here simply to say thanks and comment about how impressed I am. It looks awesome and I haven't had any issues at all. It definitely puts my mind at ease when I'm swinging. I'm glad I didn't buy the plastic one and found this one instead. Great job and thanks so much for your work on this!

      • what is the difference between the FMJ case sold on ebay and the one that is now available on skytrak's website which also has the FMJ initials on it?

Our is much lighter weight steel and doesn't have the handle.

      • HI awisnia, I have a question about your units. My mat area is the same height where the hitting area is and where the ST is set up.
If I use your unit it will the ST not be too high? It doesn't look as if I can lower it enough to be level with the hitting area have there been any issues with this?
Also is there a picture of the back of the unit?

Just use it without the legs and set it on the mat - works fine. (see photo a few posts above)

Nothing to see on the back - it's wide open. ST screws to the base.
      Working...
