  • SkyTrack - Full Metal Jacket protection shield

Finally had a chance to finish a prototype of my SkyTrak protection. (I had my last unit take a ball to the IR lens while IN the protective case from SkyTrak - it didn't work again.)

Being lucky enough to own a business with a good bit of sheet metal equipment, and finally the time. (having a party this weekend and need to protect my unit!) The leveling feet need a bit wider spacing, and I need to test that the unit still reads shots. I went with a minimum of openings to try to keep balls from sneaking through the front. I popped off the IR lens so that it's easy to see the parts that need to "see" - I'll obviously be putting it on before testing. Still unsure if I'll screw the unit to the base and leave an air gap, or use foam on 5 sides to isolate the SkyTrak from the steel.

I added a lip in the front so I can drop an alignment rod in for a visual reference.

Holes on bottom need adjustment, and maybe slotting to allow the SkyTrak to be adjusted to the base for alignment.

  • I finally got my SkyTrak in the mail yesterday and got to test out the FMJ. I had purchased a FMJ from the V1 batch with the screw alignment issue before I had my SkyTrak unit. I ended up using earthquake putty to secure it to the case to the ST rather than drilling out the bottom hole. It made it very easy to align the gaps on both sides and the front and I thought it might still provide some shock absorption.

Anyway, I must have been excited for the SkyTrak because I got the shanks for my first session. Good news is that even on my worst shank I still didn't hit the unit. I had one really bad shank that didn't read. I tried again later in the evening and my swing came back, all distances felt right, didn't notice any misreads. Hit probably 100 balls in the driving range and the GIP and from everything I could tell the FMJ had no impact to the reads. Seems like a great investment and I'm just a little more comfortable now than I would be otherwise.

Sledge0001 thanks for the feedback - was that in TGC? I've heard a few questions via the listing site if it "works with TGC". So far all I've heard is that it does, but I wanted to get more data points. From my limited understanding of the software hand-offs, I've always assumed that the SkyTrak software took the images pushed from the unit and then determined ball parameters (speed, azimuth, spin, launch angle, axis) and then passed those numbers to the TGC interface (or used the same data for its own range, challenge, or improvement ball flight creation)

In other words, one application may trace a different ball flight, but the underlying starting data is the same for both.

So, if the SkyTrak is "working" in the case for its own range app - it will work for TGC by definition...does that seem right??

Yes hat was in TGC. I have had issues with high lofted flop shots prior to using the FMJ. My feeling is the shot would have been missed as well with the plastic protective case.

Sledge0001 how was the putting? Working fine for me.

        No issues putting at all.

    • I'm very pleased with my fmj. I ended up enlarging one hole so it's secured now. Certainly no more misreads than without the fmj. I used 1/16" self adhesive rubber cabinet door bumpers to space the Skytrak off the face, worked great and adds a little shock absorption

      • Remember I am still grounded from my skytrak !! until I receive the FMJ, please keep us up to date on how the new batch is coming along.
Just jumped on board with a SkyTrak August 2015 for my birthday present to myself.

            • Anyone have any putting issues on TGC? I haven't modified my case yet but I didn't bolt it down either, just pushed it against FMJ and my putts kept going 3 degrees one way or the other randomly making me miss badly... Has anyone modified and had the issue go away? I ended up taking the skytrak out of the case the last few holes just to make sure it wasn't the machine and it seemed fine that way with no weird readings...

Just an update on the putting issues I was having, I had time yesterday to drill the holes out on the bottom of my beta case to fit properly and proceeded to play around 25 holes and didn't have one put roll unexpectedly at all.

            • Received my skytrak condom,(beta version) from the uk, really impressed with the build and finish, tried 100 shots, no misreads. Boom.

              • I received my FMJ yesterday; spent around 2 hours with it on my Skytrak and very few misreads.

Thanks for getting these out to us to us so quickly!

                • Well guys, I had my first unintentional test of the FMJ last night. My slightly intoxicated buddy toed a hybrid so badly it struck my SkyTrak right in the belly. As you might expect the FMJ said "F YOU" to the ball as it bounced off harmlessly. SkyTrak still working perfectly!

I'm interested to see a direct hit to the lens area, but I'm not willing to go out of my way to test it!

Keep feeding beers to your buddy and you might find out!!! ;>)

                • Just got my fmj yesterday. Super solid build. Screw holes bolted in aligns fine. Not much misreads. Love the alignment stick holder. Very happy with the purchase. Now what to do with the older plastic case.

try cutting the two "jail bars" out of the flash area. apparently that is what was modified on the other forum-member-designed case to prevent misreads.

They protect the lens and cause no issues.

                      • Really looking forward to receiving my FMJ case. The SkyTrak case is fragile in my opinion. I'm a PGA Pro in the U.K, Coaching on the ST Sim has been a nervy experience. The shank is a common shot with amateur golfers, but the shot that really makes the ST unit vulnerable is the toe shank. The ST units close proximity to the strike area adds an extra pressure to handicap golfers. I would love to be able to position the ST unit another 30cm's back from the strike area. For those Basement parties, beware also of the golfer with the recoil follow through!!
A strike bag provides good protection from the carefree swing.....Lamby
