  • I don't think you would need an i7... an i5 would do just fine and should save you some coin. The main advantage in an i7 is the virtualization components, so unless you need them... don't waste your money

      Ok great
      Thanks

  • Ok, im sure this has been answered but i want to make sure im not wasting money as well as not going to regret my purchase. I will really only be using this pc for TGC, with that being said it seems as if i5 with a 970 graphics card is really all i need correct? I dont want to spend more but if someone were to tell me that in the next year im going to need to upgrade the PC i would rather just spend the extra money now. Or if the experience is going to be much greater going with a better graphics card i would rather spend the money now. If someone can let me know their thoughts that would be great. Again sorry if this has been answered but ive read this whole thread and it has not become clear to me (although im not the sharpest tool in the shed)

Yea I have and i5 and 970 and it works beautifully. You should be good to go with that. Not sure when those new super powered graphic cards are coming out exactly and what the prices will be but if its similar prices and coming soon it would probably be worth it to wait and get one of those. But still looks great and runs smoothly with the i5 and 970

      • my thoughts. You are about to buy a PC to run a software package costing 1,000 dollars and you want to go cheap on the PC? I can only suggest what I did. I went with this PC and been using TGC for about 3 weeks now. Running the at highest graphic setting and maxed out all the detail (trees, water, etc) and it has been great.

Hope not coming off as rude...just hoping to save you a mistake by saving a few hundred dollars.

Not rude at all. I just want someone (computer guru) that know computers and TGC to say build something beyond i5 w/970 card because the experience with be soooo much better with say i7 w/1080 card and worth the money. Or someone say its a total waste of money to build beyond 970 card because TGC wont run/play any better.

          • Currently the 970 is the best value/performance for the $$. I have played the game with a GTX 680,970,980ti. It is not worth upgrading if you already have the 970. The 970 will not play the game with everything at max unless you are okay with 20 FPS @ 1080p. The 980ti will not play with everything at max with more than 30FPS. My advice is to buy the best video card that you can afford. Don't go below the 970. Max settings = High, 1080p, object detail 5, trees at 10000,2000, water detail 2, and everything else turned on. TGC is a game that requires 50FPS or more to be smooth. CPU and memory don't really mean a whole lot for TGC. I have a 2nd gen i7 and 16 GB DDR3 2133 Mhz ram. TGC never uses more than 50% of either. So you can get away with an i5.

It is disappointing that the 970 has not come down in price. Many sites are selling the 1070 and 1080 above MSRP. This means that there is plenty of stock left of the 9 series. The 1070 was supposed to be $360-370 USD and = to 980ti performance. In Canada, the 1070 and 1080 are backordered and selling for about $600/$900 cnd. The 970 and 980ti are selling for $400/$800.

You have a tough decision. Wait for the price to come down or buy whatever you can afford. In my opinion, the money I spent going from the 970 to the 980ti was not worth it. Now, if I were you, I would either buy the 1070 or the 970. Here is a video with the 980ti at 60FPS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkF1oSIgyzo watch it in chrome or windows 10 to get 60FPS.

im not saying money is no object but ill spend an extra grand if its worth it. So based on the suggestions i should build around the 1070 card? or the 1080 card?

              • If I had to build..... it would be the 1070. TGC is awesome at 60 FPS. The 1070 is an incredible jump from the 970. about 50% higher clock speed and uses less power. Choose the 1080 if 4K is in the near future for you. That may be the only card around that can do TGC at 4k with some good FPS. If I was hit with a big bag of money, I would build a 1080 rig to go along with a 4 k projector.

                • Ahhh, one question for elliotallen - What kind of projector do you have or are planning to get? If you don't get a projector that is capable of showing all the pixels (put out by your graphics card) that you might be spending extra money for, then you are kind of shooting yourself in the foot.

im sure great point! i all ready have (well just purchased and installed) the benq ht1085st 1080p. This will be mainly for golf sim but kids can watch movies too (there kids they dont need 4k, lol) so if you guys thinkl that im wasting money and wont regret it in the future ill build the 970 platform.

building computers is not very difficult but you do need to get comatible components. list out what you plan on buying.

Hi, I'm assuming you mean to build the PC yourself? If so, take a look at the corsair 540 case... it looks big, but is really just a wider version of a standard case and gives you loads of room for cable management.

There's not much to building a computer... just take your time and follow the instructions the come with the components. Any good gaming motherboard will have a decent network port for Internet, but some also come with built in Bluetooth and wifi... if not, you may want to consider an aftermarket pci card for that.

I just built a system for other purposes, but will run TGC when the time comes with a Gigabyte Gaming Plus board, corsair vengeance ram, an i7 4790k 4ghz, GTX 980, 750w power and liquid cooling. The ONLY reason for the i7 was virtualization... in most cases, the i5 is a better choice.

Any questions on the build, just ask.

                    • You definitely need to be able to connect to the Internet. TGC is played while online.

That is a good looking case. I am running Antec 1200 V2. They come with 5 140 mm fans and one 200mm. All fans are 3 speed controlled. If you find your fans loud, swap them out for 3 speed fans. That's a cheap upgrade to make the rig quieter.

Thanks keither5150. This came with 3 x 140mm fans, but I added another two with the gtx110i cooling. I'm planning on replacing them all with noctua's at some point, but it's not too bad... everything is set on quiet lol... much the same as my Mac Pro

                      • im so bad at computers i cant upload the stuff i want to order.. so long and short (assuming i pick stuff that mates) i5/6600, 1080 or 1070 card, windows 10, 750w power supply, 16gb ram, 250ssd, 2tb HD, msi z107a mother board, cpu cooler and tower..anything else? like bluetooth/network card crap, sound card? My router is super close to where the tower so i just ethernet it with a cable? then run hdmi from tower to projector? If anyone lives close ill be more than happy to take them out to my club for some help
