  • If you aren't a computer guy then I highly recommend buying one prebuilt. Even guys that like building computers sometimes have a hard time getting it to work at first. I bought my computer from CyberPower and I'm very happy with it.

    • If you have a computer store like Memoryexpress in Canada nearby, they charge a small fee for building and installing the OS. Memoryexpress charges $70 cnd to assemble and load the OS. There are more than a few guys that can help with parts selection. If you live near Calgary Canada, I will build it for you for a round of golf. Plus you will have to spot me a few strokes. List your location.... maybe somebody on the forum lives close and is willing to help. Most people here would do it for a round of golf.

      • I second a store like memory express. Also, they will help you compete the build. Just let them know what you are doing this for and then will get everything right.

        • I live in california so canada might be a bit far lol. there i a place called micro center, i think they will build it for $150. Might be the best way to go.

          • Hi All,

I have read through the forums and would like some feedback on a pc build i am planing for TGC.

I would like to ensure Good Visual detail, Good FPS (without freeze is good enough). Does not require 1080p but i would like a decent resolution.

My current thoughts are: My question are:
Would the build give me what i would like? or should i upgrade components?
If i should upgrade components, should i stick with AMD (higher powered AMD processor), or will i5 give me a substantial increase in usability for the price increase?
If i need to upgrade, given what i would like to achieve, would i be better off updating processor or graphics?

Upgrade options (dont really have the money to upgrade so if the above spec will not suffice for what i would like achieve i will save a little more and purchase later, but obviously dont want to be saving forever)
Motherboard Asus H170 PRO GAMING Intel H170 S1151/4xDDR4/2xPCIEx16/HDMI/DVI/DP/USB3.1/ATX Motherboard
Processor Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz 6MB LGA1151 Skylake Boxed CPU
Processor Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz 8MB LGA1151 Skylake Boxed CPU
Graphics Card Gigabyte 6GB GTX 980 Ti G1 GAMING VGA CARD
Final question, There are multiple GTX 970, GTX 980... cards at different online stores, is there a specific one which i should be looking at?

            Thanks in advance

Apologies for double posting (editing the post), I have just seen a pc available on an ebay like site which i could potentially get at a good price. Does anyone know if an i7 4790 with the GTX 970 will acheive what i need from above?

            Thanks again

Intel chips are far better than the Amd processors. The FX 6300 is a weak processor compared to what is available for a little more money.

Go here for a gaming processor hierarchy chart. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...rchy,4312.html

Notice that the FX 6300 is on par with first generation i7. 2nd gen i7 is on par with AMD's top processor. Save money on the CPU as TGC is not that hard on the processor or memory. I am running 2nd gen i7 with a GTX 980ti. The processor maxes out at 45-50% usage. Spend as much as you can on the video card. I don't think that you will see a big difference between a high powered AMD compared to a mid level i5. Make sure that you stay above 3.4 GHZ for intel and 3.8 for AMD. Disregard what they advertise for turbo. You don't want your CPU throttling up all the time any way....

As for your final question. I like EVGA's GTX cards with ACX 2 or 3 cooling. ACX cooling is the best that I have seen for video cards. Also EVGA offers some superclocked or overclocked models for pretty much the same money. This will give you a few more FPS for the same price.

If you want to buy right away..... just upgrade your CPU by about $80 and the machine will be fine for TGC. I also just noticed that the 970 are becoming scarce. It looks like the GTX 1060 is replacing it...... from the specs of the 1060, it looks like a good card for the money. It seems that from the specs, the 1060 should be on par with the 970 or 980

i7 4790 and the GTX 970 will run TGC just fine.

An i5 with 4 gb gtx 970 is all you need to run TGC. Spending more is wasting money.

          • Thank you all very much for the feedback.

            • i5 4460 3.2 gig, 8 gig ram with a Raedon R9 200 series 4gig video card. Any problems with this running TGC? I have TGC and play it without any problems, didn't know if it took more to run the simulation itself.

upgrade your video card. You will find that the GPU is your weak link. The new minimum is GTX 1060 6GB or GTX 970. Although the game will run on an R9, you will have to turn the graphics down for it to run smooth. TGC is a game that looks great at 60FPS..... not so great at 30FPS.

            • Has anybody used the Radeon R9 390 8GB Video card? It has Frame Rate control so you can adjust to the best settings for TGC (60FPS). Trying to keep my costs down on the pc for my setup, let me know if any of you have gone AMD over Intel. Are their any gotchas?

              • I don't think very well. Look for a comparison of video cards and compare this to the recommended card.

                • From my own research, I would say you need 1060 card and poss even 1070 to be future proof, but 1060 should be fine. Msi and asus would be good options.. but more expensive than Dell.

                      • Anyone else having issues with Nvidia geforce GTX cards? specifically the 1060? I am setting up my sim and "almost" have everything (skytrak, CCE mat, benq projector, TGC, new comp), just waiting on the screen from par2pro which arrives tomorrow. I bought a brand new PC: CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Liquid Cool GLC4200A Desktop Gaming PC (Intel i7-7700K 4.2GHz, NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 2TB 7200RPM HDD, 128GB NVMe SSD, WiFi, Win 10 Home). Started it up and it is blazing fast but would crash trying to play video, and I mean ANY video including TGC, youtube, random websites that have a pop-up adds running video. I tried clean installing different GPU drivers with no luck. Several hard re-boots later, the GPU is toast. It no longer shows up in device manager and comp crashes everytime I try to download a driver. I am returning it. This makes me weary to try this again reading about all the crash issues people are having with nvidia cards. I guess I just got a bad one.

Yes, sounds like you got a bad card. Should RMA it with no problem tho. Electronics have these things happen. I've built many computers and I go maybe every 3 builds with something needing to be RMA'd. Most times, if it's the case, they come dead on arrival.

Was the card super hot to touch?

I never opened the case to touch it but the temps on the afterburner software never got too hot. It never really got a chance to work tho as it would crash instantly when trying any video. I was trying to underclock it to see if that made a difference but never got the chance before it died. I am returning whole comp, got it from amazon. It was an MSI GPU board. likely try a different brand.

I've got the smaller 3gb 1060 card and it runs TGC just fine. I stumbled across a gaming pc deal at a stupid price that had this card in it so I said why not expecting to pull it, sell it and buy something more powerful, but I haven't found a need to yet. Definitely just a bad card.

                      • I have the below graphics card in my computer. Wondering if I'm missing out on anything in regards to TGC. The card came in the computer spec'd for my engineering software. It does seem to work well with TGC, just want to make sure.
