  • HP is allowing GTX 980ti's to be shipped with 500 watt PSU...Beware!!!

The GTX 980ti requires a minimum of 600 watts. Some of them will require 700 watts. Maybe HP has a magical 500 watt PSU that will handle it. I am thinking that it is not magical and that this is a mistake on HP's side. If they managed to find a company to build a GTX 980ti that will run on 500 watts, you may not want that brand. That's like buying a Ferrari that can't break the speed limit. The GTX 980 will run on 500 watts. Hopefully HP ships all of these computers with the proper minimum PSU for the GTX 980ti. If HP's PSU's are magical, I apologize to them for this post.

I just ordered this PC yesterday. Was concerned about power supply, but I would HP has run some stress tests before making this config available. If you select 980, they make you switch to 500W power supply from the default 300W, so looks like they are aware of that.

I just did a quick search and found this: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...ti,4164-7.html. Looks like even in stress conditions, GTX 980ti only needs about 250W of power.

But would surely like to get actual feedback from people who have this PC and are running this config.

NVidia's site lists 500w as the required power so all should be good.

Remember that manufacturers are working not only to increase resolutions but also to reduce power requirements (and heat) as well. Newer cards use less power.

Exactly, some of the older cards actually use more power based on the link I posted above.

We purchase from Memoryexpress.com up here in Canada. Every 980ti I looked at required a minimum of 600 watts..... maybe it's Cnd watts. Sorry if I raised any unnecessary flags. I haven't bought an off the shelf computer since the Pentium 166mmx was king. I just recently purchased the GTX 980ti and I thought it was odd that they were shipping with a 500 watt PSU. The video card may only draw 250 w of power but everything in your computer needs power. Hard drives, DVD rom, CPU, Motherboard etc.

There's a few posts on slickdeals for the current deal thread , and the earlier similiar deal before christmas who confirm the psu is bronze certified and can handle the loads of both the gtx 980ti and i7. The gtx 980ti card they put in is the nvidia geforce gtx 980ti reference card by nvidia..

This has been discussed a lot here. HP is a pretty big company. You'd think they know what they are doing.

One would hope so. If the computer crashes during play at least you have a very good idea of what the problem is.

I bought one of the HP gaming PC's on Slick Deals with the 980ti and 500 watt power supply. I have no issues running TGC. Runs smooth as butter. So if they are running that deal again on Slick Deals for a good price, I would highly recommend it. It's the best price for the specs. Here's what I got:

Here's the specs with my upgrades:
          HP ENVY 750xt Desktop PC
          4th Generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790K processor quad-core [4.0GHz, 8MB Shared Cache]
          16GB DDR3-1600 DIMM (2x8GB) RAM
6GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 980Ti [DL DVI-I, HDMI, DP, DP, DP]
          500W Power supply
          2TB 7200 RPM SATA 6G Hard Drive
7-in-1 Media Card Reader, 4 USB Ports (Top), Audio [Top 2USB2.0, 2USB3.0]
          HP WLAN 802.11 b/g/n 1x1 MCard BT
          No Additional Security Software
          Home and Home Office Insert
          Windows 10 Home 64-bit OS
          Microsoft Office Trial
HP USB volume control Keyboard and USB Optical Mouse
          Integrated Sound
          SuperMulti DVD Burner
Total cost: $1,163 plus I still get a 90 rebate.

Just purchased the exact same as yours last night and another guy assured me that he has the same 980ti with 500w PSU and has no issues at all so I'm going to go with it.

That is a great build for the dollar. You guys will like that video card. I have a GTX980ti in my sim computer. I have detail level 1 and trees turned up to max. I get a solid 55-60 FPS on every course. Detail level really doesn't change much when you go to level 5. It just kills your FPS. On my impact screen, I can't tell the difference between 1 and 5. Tree distance is nice to have at max. That way the tree detail changes very little during ball flight. I am playing at 1680x1050 to fill my screen better.

Detail refers to the number of triangles used to make things like ball washers and tee markers and benches. 5 is a ton of traiangles and 1 is less. Anything more than 1 is a total waste of CPU/ video power.

              I agree, I couldn't see a difference in quality between 1 and 5. 40 inch monitor or projector. I have my settings at level 1 , trees 10000 and 2000. 1680x1050. Looks goods and smooth @ 60FPS

mthunt - The voice of reason. I use my sim to (try) to improve my golf game. Guess I'm of a certain age as video gaming to me doesn't register very high on my interest scale.

Maybe the rebate isn't being offered anymore. I bought this deal from Slick Deals around Christmas. If the new deals have a rebate it should say it during the sale. Worst case call and talk to one of the sales reps. The PC works great with TGC. I just need it working with my Skytrak!!! Soon!!!!

I called to try and modify my order during the build, they gave me 50.00 credit back to keep order the same. I've read other people having shipping delays and received up to 100.00.
I have this PC now, very happy with how it runs..

Mine is getting delivered later this week. Have you had any issues with the 500W?

Mine also comes in this week. I had canceled my order as I was planning to just use iPad with SkyTrak, but I got an email couple of days ago that they could not cancel it as it was already ready to ship. And now I see the news that TGC comes out for SkyTrak this week. I guess I may just end up keeping it now

Gamble Gamble There is a 30 day return policy, so you can try out out and see how it works. That's what the support guy kept telling me when I was canceling.

Got my PC yesterday. Will open it later today and run maybe 3DMark to check it's performance. I can run any other tests and post the results before I install any other software on it. Let me know...
