Pulled the trigger - EVA GeForce Nvidia 1070

OK, I pulled the trigger and ordered a Nvidia 1070. Read tons of reviews, compared to 1080 price/performance/needs and decided the 1070 was for me. I currently have a 750 for I am expecting quite a jump in performance plus the eliminate the sluggish behavior I get when I try to record my rounds. Will see in a few days.

This is what I went with. Nvidia GTX 1070

Went through RebateCodes and got additional 1.5% cashback to reduce costs.

Looking forward to hearing what you think. I've got a 770 and I'm looking to upgrade to the 1070 as well.

What are the difference between all the 1070's, EVGA, ASUS, MSI, Zotac, ETC. Are they actually different and what do you look for between them?

Look at clock speed and the quality of the cooler. Just because it looks cool doesn't mean that it runs cool. I prefer over clocked or super clocked EVGA with ACX cooling. http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX62796. You will get about 7% higher clock speed for about the same price. I have ACX cooling on my GTX 980ti and it is very quiet and runs cool...... for a video card.

Update: The board came in today and is massive. It is about 11 inches long with dual fans. I gave it and my box to our IT guy and he is installing. He had to move the hard drive and rerun some cables but he says he can get it in. Should be able to take it home today.....will have to wait until Wednesday to test and report back.

The 1070's performance will be on par or slightly greater than the 980ti. I have had the 980ti for quite some time. 1070 users can expect to run TGC on level 1 with everything turned on and trees at max. At these settings most courses will give you a solid 60FPS. Some courses like Magnolia are a little harder on FPS. On these courses you will have to turn the trees down to about 2/3 of max to keep 60 FPS. It is best to use a saved replay with FRAPS turned on to adjust your settings. I was hoping to be able to run level 5 with trees at max but the 980ti can't get 60FPS at these settings. At these settings I get 15-35 FPS depending on the course. While some people will find 30 FPS playable, I find it too choppy especially when the ball lands near the green. At 60 FPS TGC is a stunning game. It is extremely difficult to see any difference between level 1 and 5 and trees ....1/3 of max compared to max. I currently have my settings at level 1 and trees at 2/3. These settings give me a solid 60FPS 99% of the time. 60 FPS is what you want to have rather than slightly higher detail. I will not be upgrading my card until I go with 4K. For people with a GTX 970... this is a marginal upgrade. For people will less than a 970, this is a solid upgrade.

First Report:

The card is installed. We ended up having to put in another power supply to handle to card. First reaction based solely on booting up the game is astounding. My boot up time from the moment I start TGC to menu where you choose "Play Round, Tournament , or Tour" has gone from 4 to 5 minutes to around 1 minute. Remember, I am coming from a 750, but I used to take warm up swings, grab a coke, and do other things while the game was loading......now, it flies through the various screens.....

Courses look great and I believe the card will be able to handle everything maxed. I maxed out everythiing including trees at 10,000 and the system started to lag....but I'm not sure what having trees at 10,000 and disctance maxed out even does for you. I put trees back to 500 and distance at 500 feet and there is no lag whatsoever. This includes object level at 5 (not sure if that is really needed or can be distinquished from level 3 or 4)

I take the computer home tonight and hook into ProTee and hit balls tonight. I will also test recording webcam and audio to determine the Object Level I will run at. My primary concern is to tweak the system to run with no lag or jerky movements. I will determine the max. detail level that I can do so with sacrificing performance.

So far, I am loving the the boot up speed......will write about the rest after testing tonight.

If your computer has a SSD that will help the load times. I go from first click to John welcoming me to TGC in 34 seconds.

Always use Object Detail 1. Anything higher is not noticeable (by the human eye) and just eats GPU power.

Download Fraps to display your FPS or you can use the FPS display built into Geforce Experience shadowplay. 55-60 FPS is what you need for silky smooth performance. I like rather have the trees turned up and the detail level at level 1. If you use shadowplay to record video.... make sure that you go into the settings and record at 60FPS. I look forward to your review.

Well, I tested the new card out last night and I have to say I am super impressed. I downloaded the new version of GEForce Experience and the shadowplay setup, etc. went very smoothly.

I'm not an expert, so I will describe as best I can. I had the FPS counter on and it would run anywhere from 14 to 60 FPS depending on what was happening on the screen. I'm guessing, but like on the driving range (little trees, etc) the fps counter was on like 23 - 25. On other courses it would run up to 55-60. At all times, I never experienced a lag or anything.

When recording my game, my webcam footage and audio is now clear. I set the recording at 60 FPS per recommendations.

I did not overclock my card as I don't think I need to because there is no real improvement to be had.

Will look at some movies tonight.

excuse me if this is a goofy question: i understand the graphics will be better with the better card when viewing on a monitor, but what about on a hitting screen via a HD 1080p projector?

In other words, does the improvement in speed and clarity translate into a better experience vis a vis the projector? (and I won't have a $2k projector...)
