  • i5 required for TGC

    Hi!

I've been looking at this forum for quite a while now, and finally decided to take the leap and go for TGC. I am building a simulator computer, but I am a bit on a budget. I do not need to play it at the extreme highest detail. It has too play fluently on a good detail level.
I allready bought a year old second hand GTX970. I think I am pretty good with that one, I am just looking arround for the rest of the system.

Is an I5 processor really the minimum required? Does TGC really benefit the 4 cores? I always heard that most of the games do not use all 4 cores. (I am not going to do anything else then play TGC on this system)

I am looking at a system like this :
    - Intel Core i3-6100 Boxed. (2 cores at 3,7ghz and hyper threading, so can run 4 processes)
    - ASRock H110M-HDS
    - Crucial CT8G4DFD8213
    - Samsung 750 Evo (retail) 250GB
    - Corsair CX450M
    - Sharkoon case

Total build cost would be arround 600euro's. So quite a bit less then most of the systems I saw here.

    What do you guys think?

    Thx!

I'm a bit curious about this as well. Gearing up next week to remotely configure my old mans setup for Skytrak and TGC. He is has a 720p projector, Core I3 Quad Core @ 3.5GHZ, 8GB Ram, GTX 750ti. Is anyone else running a Core I3 for TGC?

Here is a cpu gaming hierarchy chart. Each level down represents a noticeable or measureable drop in performance. I am currently running a i7 2600k 3.4GHGz and never use more than 45% of the cpu's power. Upgrading for me would be a waste of money. If you are building or buying a new machine, you would be well served to stay within the top two or three tiers. And just because your processor is 2nd gen i7 doesn't mean that you will benefit from an upgrade. New processor would mean new motherboard and perhaps memory as well. Take that money and upgrade your video card instead.

We've run thousands of CPU benchmarks on all new and older Intel and AMD CPUs and ranked them.

i3 vs i5. i5 generally have turbo boost and more cache. Meaning that they will easily outperform any i3. Clock speed is only part of what people should look at. I am also interested if an i3 can cut it with TGC.. Based on how little my cpu is used during gameplay, I would guess that it may be ok but would be working very hard to get decent FPS.

I just broke down and bought a used Dell Inspiron desktop with Core I7-4790 with 16GB of Ram and 1TB drive from EBay for $400 shipped. He asked $500 but took $400. I then went and picked up a new EVGA GTX1060SC and an EVGA 500 B1 Bronze 500watt PSU. This should put the old man into the game!

In this case since the hard drive is used that is the one part I prefer to replace. It's not necessary but hard drives are prone to failure and by replacing it with an SSD it will not only improve performance but also extend the computers life.

erikh5014 The CPU and Memory are pleanty but the graphics card and PSU aren't going to cut it.

Anyone know with what mainstream games we can compare TGC for FPS? There are a lot of reviews and tests out there cliaming the i3 6100 to be a very good budget gaming cpu.

For what its worth, TGC has been optimized to use the graphics adapter for processing and rendering. This allows you to use the max CPU power available for simulator hardware processing purposes. Systems such as ProTee, SkyTrak and GSA run image and data processing on CPU only. TGC uses on average 1.2GB of internal memory.

For the best experience follow the hardware requirements from the hardware manufacturer (eg SkyTrak, ProTee) and install a fast graphics card (GTX970, GTX1060, GTX1070 etc) for TGC.

Most people on this board go crazy with their builds and live at the other end of the spectrum, so I doubt anyone has tried a lesser cpu especially with a 970.

I have the absolute bottom end Skylake i5 (2.7ghz) with a 970 and just tried a few holes on a few different courses. The peak loading reached 52% when running 60 fps. So my gut feel is your i3-6100 will work.

I'd be interested to know for sure though! You have the chance to push the boundaries of our collective knowledge so go for it and let us know!
