Not an easy answer, issues that factor the decision:
1)What type of system are you using. I use ProTee and most are about 10 feet.
2)I built a full width system and wanted a clean look with no enclosure. In order to not hit my ceiling on wedge shots, I moved closer to the wall at about 8.0 feet. I adjusted my lights, etc. and love it. Having a screen that is 17ft x 10ft. and I like being close because it gives me more of an immersion experience....but that's just me.
3)If you have a Skytrack or GC2, you may have to ask one of those guys if there are any rules to go by.
4)Also, I would first locate my projector because if it has to go within a limited area based on screen size and projector. If it is a short throw and you want to mount it up high, it will come in play. I think my projector is 7.5 which is basically right next to my overhead light which is right above by hitting area....so, all that comes into play.
Hope that helps.

I am at 14" from the wall, but that is because of where my studs were located to mount my angle iron. A general guideline is a foot from the wall, but I've read that some have it as close as 6 inches. It depends on your screen, what you have behind your screen (net, blankets, pads, nothing, etc.), and your ball speed.

I went 8" off the back wall with a Carls Premium Impact Screen and it is great. I bought a few packs of Bed Sheet adjustable elastic straps/clips from Amazon and used Electrical conduit plastic straps screwed to the drywall on the sides to loop them through and both clips attach to the screen. Top has a loop sleeve that is supported by 1" EMT just like a curtain rod. I have no bounce back. The very bottom 6" of the screen is looped under and extends into the room about 6 inches and I used some aluminum 1 3/8" by 1/8 straps and screwed them into a 1 x 12 plank and it lays on top of the subfloor. I wrapped the part being screwed into the plank with white duct tape.
We built frames from 2 by's and wrapped them with speaker carpet. I have two side pieces that are set on brackets on the side walls and the top piece sets on top of them with gravity. Then everything can come apart with out unscrewing anything if you need to get behind. It looks like a movie theater and we use it for that too! I also used a Fiberbuilt 1' by 4' hitting strip and it is awesome on the arms. I would recommend them for that. The rest was sub flooring plywood on 1x4's and HD contractors carpet pad(orange) over home depot artificial turf for the hitting area and a real nice plush piece of carpet for the back of the room where the bean bag chairs live. Benq 2150ST projector on a track I made from two pocket door tracks. When we watch TV we go 16 by 9 and move projector forward, golf sim goes 1600 x 1200 and the projector goes back a few feet. Got a Alienware refurb beast from Dell for the CPU graphics system. The Benq was refurbed too. Everything but the GC2 was less than the GC2 and software but I did a lot myself. I really appreciate these boards and just hope this helps someone else as much as the others helped me in their posts!
Have an amazing golfing day!
