  • Finally! Starting a build, need help

After getting a golfsmith gc2 however long ago, I have finally moved into a home wit a 12ft ceiling in the garage and I have my half (per wife) to go at it. I was initially going to get a allsports mini bay narrow, however I am thinking about maybe just building one custom. Not totally a money decision, but it is hard to pay $1400 for fittings and black cover.

    so here are my limitations:

i cannot get a 10ft enclosure in my half. I am really looking at a 9'6 cage max size. 9' screen?

i am cool with 4:3, but I have the height, would it help to be 9' tall instead of 8ft for higher loft shots? I can run a black strip over the top of screen that is blank for looks.

projector is a major thing I can't get info on. I want to do ceiling, but my garage door opener is dead center and in the area(double garage with 2 doors). I will confirm my size tomorrow from screen to opener, but I may need to go really short throw

since in garage and daylight coming in with door open, what the hell is deal eith lumens? The benq 2200 throws me off. I am looking at benq2050, optima x305, and optima GT or viewsonic one. I don't want to double post in projectors section but I am really struggling with what projector to get. Again, is benq too far, I will have numbers soon.

do I just hang screen? Should somehing be behind the screen? Like moving blankets etc to dampen bounce back and help image?

how far back from screen is ideal to hit from? Having a hard time laying this out. I do have a hosel rocket miss when working on swing so I want to be close enough for that but far enough to be comfortable.

i need to be able to move the enclosure off the wall once a blue moon as my electrical panel is on that wall, it should be light enough to slide out a little to get there?

what is distance from wall screen should be? I read 18"?

i have a tv stand with flatscreen and computer to be in front of where I hit, gc2, mats, so in my mind I am enclosure, screen, flooring, and projector away from being done. Am I missing anything?

Thanks guys I am looking forward to sharing pics as it goes, probably asking a lot of questions as it goes, and finally joining the home golf sim community!

Oh yeah, if I build my own, I would get a Carl's premium screen (or whatever is recommended) vs whatever the mini bay comes with as a screen. Not sure if that matters.

For the garage door, you can always get one of these. https://www.amazon.com/LiftMaster-85...dp/B00BS28SP8/

That is on my list for my garage to remove the door opener from the center of the garage.

I installed the LM last week as the first step in my garage sim build; really opens up the ceiling area. Building the impact screen frame today....

Same here. Built my own version of a micro/mini bay with Carls premium and black side curtains since it doubles as the family movie room. With retractable curtains I can get my truck in garage if needed. All sports youtube channel has helpful build tutorials. Tarps.com has the fittings. I put a baffle net behind mine only because I already had it. Carl's premium screen stops 'em dead. 18" off wall is plenty and you should still be able to squeeze in to the breaker panel. My benq is about 9' from screen directly overhead. Make it as wide and tall as you can then fill the image height. Any left over on the sides will be hidden in the blackout curtains. Good luck.

I think I am going the Carl's and custom route, good to hear the premium stops it dead..

Big revelation in garage cleaning and layout today. Wife suggested that I put it going across the garage rather than in my bay, and basically it should work where her tire is right by end of my mat, if I am using simulator her car is out is all. This doubles on some space, allows for bikes and things to side on garage door side AND lets me go 10' screen size, and the corner it is going in is by door and will make it its own section and be better for watching football etc. oh yeah, projector is now a non issue, as is electric panel, so super stoked wife not only green lighted, but suggested what is truly the best spot for it.

So now my only obstacle is, how far from screen is comfortable hitting distance, and with that, getting the screen as close to the wall as possible. I don't see an issue with it being 12" off the wall, is that reasonable? I want to keep the sides at 5Ft and push the screen as far back in that as I can, so what is the safest shortest distance from screen to wall?

So before I wing this, I really do need help with the following:

          1. how far can screen really be from back wall?(I am currently planning on 12")
          2. How far is hitter from screen (I am currently planning on 10-11ft)
          3. How big should my enclosure be for a 10ft screen? I am currently thinking 6" on each side so 11' total outside width?

So I got the carpet down last night. I am ditching the tv stand and putting computer and gc2 in small cabinet and mounting flatscreen on wall above that. I really need to make the screen as close to the wall as possible, so that I can maximize that distance.

i am planning on no baffle net and sides and a top that come 2.5' past screen to darken the screen area and hopefully make projection more visible in ambient light.

how does the top effect projector? I am now starting to think I need dead space above top for projector mags to not be clipped by front of top part that hangs past screen?maybe not?

Got cage built and screen up. Couldn't resist playing a few holes on fs1 and hitting some range balls. Now I need to get the projector and blackout the cage and start bringing it together. The Carl's premium screen is flat with not bad bounce back at all with nothing behind it. I may hang some moving blankets behind it to deaden more and stop bleeding.

                  Thanks gene!

Just got a benq ht671st this morning with free mount...going to to make a slide mount for it so I can do both 4:3 no widescreen games/movies.

i also just tore up Joann fabrics and am going to be blacking out the cage maybe tonight. Got rubber for poles as well, then just waiting on projector to hash out the had tv antenna/Apple TV and hdmi splitters and everything on the electronic end.

What did you use to attach the screen to the metal frame?

Great looking cage! What material did you use for the black out and how did you attach it to the cage?
