  • Ceiling Height - Testing

I have an 8’ ceiling in the space I have. I will proceed with a simulator if I can be confident that I can hit all my irons. I am struggling to confidently assess this.

I am 6’ with a flat swing. I can swing my 3 hybrid at about 25% speed without hitting the ceiling (feels like I am not making my swing more flat to avoid the roof but until I can go all out I won’t feel I am not subconsciously adjusting). The 3 wood hits the ceiling solidly on follow through at a much slower pace yet. No mat under foot yet.

Any insight on how to ramp up confidently without putting a hole in the ceiling in the process?

i have been trying to think of easy ways to move forward.

    Thanks

Just an idea, but maybe you could take a pool noodle float or some similar long thin piece of foam and tape it to the club head end of a wedge so that the total length is the same as your 3 iron. Then swing that. If the foam hits there is no damage, and if it doesn't you should be ok.

      Some thoughts...

I am 5’5” and have used a sim with 8 for ceilings. I occasionally hit the ceiling with driver, 3 wood. I actually think swinging with an 8’ ceiling negatively impacted my swing.

My son is about 5’7” now and he started drilling the ceiling with a 5 iron. We moved the ceiling to our great room because of this.

8’ is low unless you are very short or are going to stick to short irons. I have a buddy who is 6’2” who hit the 8’ ceiling with a wedge.

only telling you this so that you don’t flatten an already flat swing more and regret it when you get on a real course and get severe pushes or hooks. Been there, done that, and finally close to being back to normal.

Sounds like a good way to groove a tentative swing to me. Not trying to kill a dream but I don’t see that working out. Have you exhausted possible ways to gain some inches? In ceiling height of course. 😁

8' simply won't work for someone 6'. It will do more damage to a swing than good. I'm 6' with 9' ceilings and I won't swing anything more than a hybrid so I won't develop any bad habits. I know I can safely swing a 3 wood, maybe even driver, but when I record those swings, I don't like what I see upon playback even if the shot was what I was trying to hit.

Thanks for the input everyone. Definitely not what I was hoping to hear but better to avoid setting myself up for failure.

I did order some 44.5" alignment sticks and was thinking of putting something foam on the end to figure out how far I have to choke down to swing all out with lot's of space to spare.

Unfortunately I don't see a realistic way to gain height anywhere. Basement would need to be dug out which may not be possible for two reasons (my house effectively sits on solid rock/clay and it's a strata so not sure they would approve structural work. There is a bedroom upstairs where a ceiling could potentially be vaulted but I don't think the other dimensions will be large enough to work even with this approach.

Unfortunately I think you are stuck. 8' isn't going to be good for much of anything as many have said. I'm 5'5" and I can swing SW-pw in my 8' room. I don't have a very upright swing but clubs longer than those can come very close on the finish. If I'm taking 3/4 punch shots I can get away with more, but you are probably going to do more harm than good.

If possible, look into a small addition, maybe 10x10 that is open into another existing room, to get some height. It isn't the cheap route, but it is going to be better than trying 8' ceilings.

I’m 6’1” and can hit 5 irons in 8 feet. I think 9 is the min for most. IMO
