  • Importance of gap between screen and net?

I'm building a net in my garage (which is located below the nursery for my 2 month old infant). Because of which, I'm trying to ensure the sound coming from my netting is as low as possible. I was told that having a gap of 1-2" between the impact screen and the backup net would result in a decrease in sound. Is that true? How much louder would it be if I just hung the screen & net from the same frame (so they are touching each other) rather than having a gap?

    Thanks!

I don't have an impact screen and net, but notice most of the sound comes from impact of the ball and driver/woods. My impact screen PR20 doesn't make a lot of noise. Its more ball/driver contact. My daughter sleeps through the sound each night. Now my wife says it sounds like a gun going off in the basement when I play.

I have my net and screen touching and it is below my son's room (20 months). I hit every night after he goes to bed.

Finding a quiet driver might be needed. I seem to recall Titleist drivers being more subdued than most.

Having a gap between the screen and net will make no difference in the sound. In fact the gap will increase wear and tear on the impact screen as it has to absorb more of the impact.

The other posters are right about sounds from the driver, which depends on the individual club, but also a big factor are the acoustics of the room itself. Garages are difficult to modify in terms of sound absoption because of their use, the concrete floor and large size.

I am working on building some acoustic panels for my garage. I will let you know how big of a difference they make after I install them
