  • Archery netting as impact screen

I've taken he plunge and bought 4m X 2.7m heavy duty archery grade netting to use as an impact screen, since the net holes are small (they have to stop an arrow). I have also thought I can also hang a white sheet behind it if the projected image bleed leads to shadowing. I plan to install in my garage at the door end as a curtain that retracts and goes along the wall, so on a right angled rail or wire. Has anyone had any experience of doing this?

Yes, that's what i do. I have PR20 from west coast netting which is considered archery netting. It has a ton of bleed through. It's mounted to a wire and slides out of the way like a curtain.

Thanks. So does the net slide along wire it's suspended by? I was thinking of sticking a hem with a chain along the bottom and hanging it just long enough to drag along the floor, I see you have just tensioned at either lower corner. Am I right in thinking that you are a fellow UK bod as well?

Yes, the net slides along the wire it hangs by. Some people just leave the bottom of their screen loose, others put something to weigh it down, due to the size i have and that i wanted to be able to rotate it for longevity, i use a bungee on the bottom to help smooth out some of the wrinkles. I'm in the US.

I think I'm going to use some industrial curtain track, like this
Niko Ltd manufactures of lifting equipment, overhead conveyor, sliding door track, lightweight overhead crane, jib crane, fall arrest track and scaffolding runway system.

Looks like a nice option and will definitely look more finished/polished. I had to use the wire due to the pitch of the roof and nothing to mount to.

The screen I bought from GolfTechSystems in the UK uses the same idea, but they have sewn the net onto a black piece of material, stops all the bleeding and shadowing. They also sewed a length of Kedar header to the top, so it fits into a really neat track that attaches to the ceiling. Only had it up a couple of weeks, but I am really pleased with it. I am not sure if you can buy the track and header in the states, but it is a really neat solution.

black backing? I would've thought a white backing would be best, would love to see a picture close up with and without a projected image on. It must be one of these industry secrets that the uninitiated (i.e me) are unaware of.

Can you share a pic of how it looks? Sounds like a nice option with the black backing and track system.

Will do, I have been away, will sort some pitctures and get them up here soon as I can. The guy I bought it from said to me that with the net type screens you get light through which creates a double image type effect, with the black backing it takes that out. Others have commented that the nets give too grainy an image, but I can only think that is due to how close they are to their screens. I am using mine with a flight scope so am about 11/12 ft from screen when hitting and more like 20ft when watching movies and in both cases I think the image is very good. The other thing to say is you get zero bounce back, the ball literally hits the screen and drops to the floor.

The track does make it look a lot nicer. What material do you have on the ceiling above the screen?

Thanks for the comment, I am still very pleased with how it is looking and working. I bought the net and black screen together from GolfTechSystems it came already sewn together and joined to a Kadar(?) header that allows it to slot into the rail at the top.

Fellow godfather - that looks great. What is the material on your ceiling? Is applied directly to drywall?

After first few miss hit drives punched holes in the drywall we put up sheets of 6mm plywood and then stuck 14mm white interlocked foam tiles to the ply. They are the tiles you use to create kids play areas, they really work well at protecting the ceiling and director into ball to screen if miss hit or chipped etc

Wow I love some of the net setups they have on GolfTechSystems. Godfather68 do you happen to know if they ship to the US?

I don't know, but the guys there are very friendly, I would drop them a note or give them a call and see what they say. They were very straight forward to deal with for me.

My only caution on reflection is they were a little too generous in the length of the white part of the screen, the black backdrop is almost exactly right in terms of the height I ordered, the white is a few inches too long, not a major deal and I am sure they would adjust it if I took it down, but that is a bit too much agro for me given how well it is working otherwise right now.

Godfather68 Can you please comment on how loud or quiet the archery netting is as compared to a traditional impact screen? I'd be willing to sacrifice a bit of image quality if it meant getting rid of the loud thud that occurs when the ball strikes the screen.
