  • Turf Install in Basement Question

Like most newbies on here, I have lurked for months and used these forums as my one stop shop for all research and ideas. I cant thank everyone enough for all the post on their lessons learned and advice. That being said, I have ordered the 5x5 CCE, putting green and fringe from JR Mats and I was wondering if anyone on the forums has put down carpet padding underneath their putting area and fringe?

My reason for thinking about the carpet padding were two fold. The first was that the padding would provide some moisture protection from my basement slab and hopefully extend the look/life of the turf. The second was that the padding would also make the putting area and fringe more comfortable to walk on.

The only real negative, besides minimal costs, was that the padding could effect the putting green somehow and the way putts roll

Has anyone here added the padding or did you just glue the turf straight onto the slab? I added the PDF just for reference. Simulator.pdf

    Thanks again!

Did you order the quick and true putting green from them? Were you able to test it out before? Reason i ask is because i purchased the putting the strip from them and it was neither quick nor true. I was able to get a piece of np50 from STI and the difference was night and day on how they performed.

Can you send a link to the NTI site where you purchased the putting carpet?

I bought a remnant at our local golf show last spring. You should be able to go to their site and find info though, may have someone local to you.

I have not dealt with the putting green material you are talking about. But the ones I have dealt with that have any carpet pad under them tend to be too squishy. The wait of my body would affect the hitting area. Hopefully that makes since. If you are worried about moisture wicking up from the concrete, you can always use Drylock paint or the epoxy garage floor paint to seal out all moisture. Both are sold at any major hardware stores. I really like my CCE mat. I built my hitting area off the floor and recessed my mat for a cleaner look. Happy sim building!

ckpope: Did you ever finish this project? What did you end up doing with the padding? Any pics you can share?

I finished the project around Thanksgiving. I decided against laying anything under the putting green and fringe, mainly due to cost. I started with a 5x5 CCE mat but after some wrist and elbow pain, I solicited some advice from some other guys on the forum and then purchased a 1x5 Fiberbuilt and cut it into the CCE mat. No more pain but I must be pretty steep to the ball because every so often I will "bottom out" on the Fiberbuilt strip.

I will post some pictures tonight when I get home. Like most projects, I am about 95% pleased with how it came out.

Here is the final product. The enclosure is a 9x12 from Carls and the hitting mat is roughly 10 feet from the screen. Overall, the basement room dimensions were 15x18x9.5.

I installed Synlawn Precision Putt turf directly on top of my 14x12 wooden subfloor. I tested it first with 1/2” foam interlocking exercise tiles under it, but that was too squishy under foot and also caused balls to bounce at least 3X higher off it. The 1/8” rubber backing on the turf is all the padding I want - feels great to walk on and firm and secure when swinging on, and balls have a very low, deadened bounce off of it.

That's really nice...these builds feel like better home resale investment than pools! Love the turf and the clean look.
