  • Simulating divot when hitting off of a mat

I am curious if anyone simulates swinging through a divot by creating a hitting surface on the mat that allows the ball to sit 1/8-1/4 inch lower than the actual mat surface. problem is that this may cause too many thin strikes when using the sim.
Or if there is a better way to simulate divots.

    That’s not actually a divot
thats more akin to a ball below your feet

Different Matts give different feelings after contact with the ball
but good clean contact and ball compression only feel one way
what happens after that is academic

find a Matt that’s forgiving enough that you comfortable hitting down into but not so forgiving that it lets fat shots feel good
and concentrate on clean contact and compression of the ball
    you’ll be taking a divot

i took a three day class at pelz in florida
they had us hit some balls off the cart path ( with their clubs)
    to bear this point out
the hitting surface is irrelevant because when proper contact is made the balls gone before the club hits the surface

Or are you trying to simulate hitting a ball out of a divot

I don't think you'd want the ball to sit lower than the surrounding surface, because a proper divot occurs after ball contact, rather than before. If your divot begins in front of the ball, as would be simulated if the ball were below ground level, you'd be hitting fat. Instead, you want the sensation of your club striking the ball first, with the lowest part of your swing occurring just after that point, so that the divot extends a few inches towards the target.

Divot simulation is an attribute of DivotAction and TrueStrike mats, as well as of mats like Fiberbuilt which have fairly tall yet sufficiently dense and flexible "grass" that the club can work through. Thinner or more tightly woven simulated grass mats provide less "give", and could consequently be considered less realistic in terms of the feel of taking a divot.

If, as Tony asks above, you're actually asking about hitting from a simulated divot rather than having the feel of a proper strike which results in a divot, that's something else and I know of no product intended to provide such a simulation.

My handy foot wedge is what I use when my ball is sitting in someone else's unrepaired divot.

Me too unless it's a tournament. It should be a rule remove from divot in fairway. It would be a better rule than dropping a ball from knee height.
