  • Kindly request input re: Hitting / Standing / Putting turf material(s)

    My situation is as follows:
I have a 16' x 9' impact screen that takes up and entire wall. My ball hitting location is 11' from the screen. I plan to build a slightly elevated platform that is approximately 15' x 13' that will incorporate my 3' x 1' Fiberbuilt hitting strip (though I am open to the possibility of using something else). The rest of the elevated area will act as a stance area to the left and right of the hitting strip for hitting full shots and also the rest of the area will be an indoor putting green with holes cut into the elevated platform. As I see it, there are a couple ways to look at how to chose the material(s) for this area:
    1. 1 platform material: you stand on it, hit full shots from it and putt on it.
    2. 2 platform materials: you stand & putt from one of the surfaces and hit full shots from the second surface (hitting strip).
    3. 3 platform materials: you stand on one surface (a more durable surface), you hit full shots from the second surface (hitting strip) and putt on a separate putting surface (made more specifically for putting).

Considerations (in no particular order of importance):
    • Durability of stance area over time
    • Realistic "true roll" of putting surface
    • Speed of putting green (looking to simulate a private course level surface, perhaps in the 10-11 stimp range)
    • Affordability (Cost of material plus potential cost of shipping, I want to do it right but of course cost is always a consideration)
    • Noise factor (minimize the sound of balls landing on putting green after dropping down from impact screen
    • Relative DIY'ness of chosen material (I'm very "handy" but I'm not a professional contractor)
    • Potential color variation with final product esthitics if I use different materials
    • Other things I have not even thought of (please share additional thoughts)
Please let me know your thoughts including specific product recommendations. I have relied heavily on GSF in the past to get me to the point where I am now. I have a great set up from a functional stand point but in a bare bones unfinished basement. I am about to embark on the next stage of the journey to finishing my basement which includes my golf sim. I am a bit of an OCD freakazoid when it comes to how things look and perform when all said and done so I am prepared to sweat the details moving forward. I would GREATLY appreciate your input to help me make good decisions.

Thank you all very much in advance for your help!

Below is a short list of turf materials that I have read about at various points (mostly on GSF.com). I have listed the material and the GSF.com post & user for each so if you are reading this you can go read those posts to get some info about each. I would love to hear about any insights you guys may have about the choices you have made on your selections. Of course, would also more than welcome to hear about anyone else's experiences. From the input I get from everyone I will compile a comprehensive list of materials and opinions of said materials and tag it to the original post to hopefully help others who are trying to make similar decisions as me.

shellman19 I'v just made a good spreadsheet of things I recommend and what I used with links and cost breakdowns. Might help as it seems like you're interested in doing something similar, you've got the bones for a great setup for sure!

I used marine carpet from Menards and seem to get very true roll. I have a 12”x24” Divotaction insert in my 10’x10’ stance platform.

I’ve been recommending marine carpet to people for years. Rolls true and pretty quick for a good price.

My setup looks like this. (or will after I get carpet around my stance/hitting mat)

I've been looking for an inexpensive green carpet to put around my stance mat & hitting mat. This is mostly for looks and walking on -- but I'd like it to be a good surface for putting also. My stance/hitting mat is about 5'x7'. My total area is 18'x12'. (or may extend the depth by another 4' or 8' depending on cost -- it is in an unfinished basement.

I couldn't find marine carpet on Menards site. Could you post a link? Thanks.

I'm tentatively planning to get Home Depot TrafficMaster Vantage -- Ivy Green. The price is good -- I think $0.69/sq ft. Another option is Grizzly Grass. I'm not sure how well these will roll for putting.

To start, I was going to get 7/16" padding. Later I may add a subfloor to bring the surrounding area to be the same height as the fiberbuilt hitting mat. (2-1/2" I think)

I don't want to get something cheap that I don't like. What are your recommendations for a putting/walking area?

I used GT34 from On Deck Sports. It's for my landing zone and I could not find anything remotely close price wise if you needed padding.. its 2.49 per sq/ft. Could obviously DYI the padding if you wanted but I didn't: https://www.ondecksports.com/GT34-Pa...rtificial-Turf
The "catch" is that orders over 85 sq ft have a huge shipping cost as they're sent freight. But I ordered 12×7 (84 sq ft) and avoided that entirely.

I can't tell you how it rolls because honestly I don't have an eye for that sort of thing. I think it's fine but I think most everything is. I can tell you that it is durable and has worked great for my landing zone so far.

Hi Celeras, great info. Can this GT34 turf roll up pretty easily for storage purposes? My sim is in the garage. thanks

Divot Action insert. True strike and fiberbuilt are not worth it, in fact somewhat terrible
