I purchased a BenQ HT1085ST projector for 10' X 8.5' screen. I was hoping to mount it upside down on the ceiling 13' from the screen. But I find this is too far away. Image is too big. Turns out that I need to mount it directly over my head which is 9' from the screen. Ceiling is only 9' high. Ceiling is unfinished. I bought a universal ceiling mount. The mount plus projector would hang down about a foot. Although I don't think I would hit it since it is directly overhead, you never know where your friends my swing. So I was thinking about putting a wooden box around the projector to protect it. Then I thought why should I even use the ceiling mount. Just build a box hanging from the unfinished ceiling and sit the projector right-side up in the box. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

If you hang it upside, you won't need to use a lot of keystone correction. They're designed with the correct vertical offset for that purpose. Having it right side up, you'll have to angle it down and use vertical keystone. You'll lose resolution that way.

The advantage with a projector mount is they usually have some positional adjustments which are easy to do. With a fixed box you will not have his ability. These adjustments are useful for fine tuning the image placement on the projection screen.

I have the1080st with the ceiling mount from benq. The projector is pretty much right over my head. Using Benq mount I can forgo one of the installation pieces and just have my projector mount right into the ceiling mount itself. This put the projector at the perfect height and is well out of the way.Last edited by Dax; 01-19-2016, 01:19 AM.

I originally bought the Optoma GT1080 and then returned it after I purchased the HT1085ST. I use this mount which is pretty awesome and low profile.

It is nice because my joist was slightly off center and I could use the pieces to offset my project to the mount and get the lens on center. I bought mine "used" through amazon warehouse for around $95. The adjustments are fairly fine with the knobs and hold their position really well. This mount with the optical Zoom worked great.
Also, I have a 8.5X12 screen and have mine mounted at around 12.5-13 ft. I have mine set to project a 4:3 image and fill my screen (at 16:9 is casts out onto the walls). If I was using 16:9, the projector would be over my head and only have a 6ft high image. This set-up (which I found by accident) works really well. I can still watch movies, but scale it to 4:3 in the projector settings.

Very nice, thanks for pics and link! I will be looking for a similar mount for a BenQ, though I might just find a way to sit it on a shelf on top of a wall unit I plan to build on the opposite wall from my screen, which is 16' away.
Glad to hear the 4:3 image works just fine, as I expected it would.

Thanks for the replies. The basement ceiling is unfinished. The ceiling joists run from front to back and are about 15" apart. I could sit a 15"x15" piece of plywood on the lip of the joists. This would be about a foot from the ceiling. Could I set the projector upside down on top of the plywood instead of hanging it from a ceiling mount? Any reason this would damage the top of the projector?
Separate question - The zoom on the HT1085ST is pretty limited. So for me the projector need to be directly over the hitting area which is 9' from the impact screen. Ideally I would like to have it 13' from the screen but then the image is too large. One idea would be to make the TGC course image smaller on the screen. With Windows you can typically "minimize" an applications image on your monitor screen and make it whatever size you like. TGC makes the image maximized with no apparent way to minimize the image. Any ideas?

Only time I have seen the image minimized is when the resolution changes. Mine has gone from 1064 x 768 to 640 x 480 inadvertently. I don't think you want this. This resolution is reflected in the on screen image.
Long and short of it is you will be losing resolution in the image that you project of the golf sim if you are running it in a minimized window.

I highly recommend a mount so that you can adjust the angle of the picture. Why not just mount it to the subfloor above and use this mount which is adjustable in length, You could drop it to whatever height you want and if you can keep it above the ceiling joists, you can then put a board across the joists to protect it. Or build the box you need. You will then have the adjustability and protection. I have this mount. Under $30 US with amazon prime and it comes with a 16 ft HDMI cable to boot.
