I need a projector to fill an approximately 8' x 8' screen. The projector will be 3.5 feet from the screen and needs to have short throw capability and a 4:3 aspect ratio. Does anyone have a recommendation for the best projector by brand, value, etc...

Here is a pretty handy site; http://www.projectorcentral.com/
Especially the calculator where you can play with ratio, throw, lumens with different projectors.

LG PF1000U? You're in ultra-short throw territory which definitely limits your options for projectors (even in the "short throw" range that most of us are working with, there are only a couple of projectors that do the job). I would think that at 3.5' your projector is at high risk of taking a ball to it.
8x8 (ie 1:1) is not altogether close to 4:3 -- you're giving up a fair amount, ie. you're talking 72hx96w (that having been said, I think the projectors you have available to your have an offset of about at least 13", so you'd only be losing 1 additional foot of height - beyond what your projector could give you). Definitely see the projector calculator that Yrrdead81 references and play with the numbers.
Is your hitting area 12' wide or 14' wide (I think in a previous thread you said you had 12x14 to work with)?

Dear John... heed what the others have pointed out. With the mounting distance that you've specified, your projector is definitely in harms way. Plus, you are in premium spec territory with the constraints that you have imposed (ie. "ultra" short throw").
Use the projectorcentral website as a reference and look at the other postings about projectors in this forum. Your starting point should be screen size. Go from there to find your "short throw" projector. Decent ones are priced well under $ 1000 USD.
