  • Fsx Play?

I have seen a couple of videos about new FSX Play software being in the works. Has anyone heard anything about when they are expecting to release this? Looks like it would be a nice upgrade to fsx2020.

I just got the email with activation code.

Nice! I got mine towards the end of the time it was available so I won’t get too excited.

Well it’s 1/27 and it says Sold Out. Not sure how downloadable software says sold out unless they are using the initial buyers as a Beta test before they open to everyone.

I think a page or so ago it was mentioned this is what's going on.

They are testing the roll out. I think they have to manually add the software to each live account and send the key via email plus give support to the people that might need it. I’m one of the hundred but haven’t received anything but a receipt yet. Guessing it’s not going very smoothly so far.

Yeah, looks like they are rolling it out slowly. I received my activation key and have been playing with it for last hour or so. The graphics is pretty good, but it is lacking some features from FSX2020... dual screen, club analysis, swing cam, etc. But overall, it is pretty sharp looking in comparison to FSX 2020

I have received my key and been playing four the past few hours. I’ve had no problems so far everything was fairly simple!!

Can I ask does, FSX Play overwrite FSX 2020 or is it a separate stand alone software program. I don't want to pay a $500.00 upgrade fee to lose my swing cam and club data playback.
Is the only range the Paris one which looks a bit gimmicky to me, would prefer to have a standard looking range available for practice.?

From a Foresight rep: " ...We only released a limited number of licenses to test the process and verify downloading. It will be back up again online soon. ... be aware that FSX Play may take upwards of a year or longer, to match and completely replace all the capabilities of FSX 2020, and to update all the course renderings. The plan is to release it in stages, as functionality and courses are completed. Customers that choose to purchase the upgrade will essentially use it in tandem with FSX 2020...."

Makes sense...migration process. As long as they honour the free course converted updates for already purchased courses, which it looks like they will. Would of thought they'd at least do the premium courses first though.

The Paris range is the only range. I can see myself using to hit driver since it's kind of setup like a long fairway and to warm up before a round. However, I doubt I will use it to practice much like indo the FSX2020 range. The biggest issue is the green is 60 yards wide. I will much more likely go to a hole on a course and hit shots from different yardages to practice, which is fine.

That is how I always practice too... meaning go to a location on a course to hit shots. Have you been able to confirm that this functionality has been maintained in FSX Play? If for some reason it was omitted it would be a deal breaker for me. Thx for your input!

Yes. I have been able to go to the Practice menu, select a course and pick a hole to practice.

This seems rushed to line up with the PGA show and Torrey. I wonder if they will ever support swing cams given the Swing Catalyst partnership?

Got it. Had some technical issues getting it activated. Foresight support was very responsive.
I'm lucky that Linfield was in included in the first batch of courses. It is the course I play the most(easy and local).
Graphics upgrade is huge! Need to figure out how to change the chase camera settings.

Can anyone who is running both TGC and FSX Play give a comparison of graphics?
I would always play FSX 2020 over TGC if I was on my own… but I would load up TGC if I have friends over as it looks MUCH better.

Does FSX Play bridge the gap?
Foresight always claimed their FSX / FSX2020 graphics were amazing (must have rose tinted spectacles!)… so just wondering how much their ‘improved graphics’ have improved?!

Great question and I too am interested to learn what people have to say about this... following!

FSX Play graphics are style wise different than TGC. Which is better would be subjective.
I'd bet ~100% of users would say TGC graphics are better than FSX2020. Between TGC and FSX Play I suspect it would be closer to 50-50.

Still some bugs in FSX Play. At lease one shot the screen showed spins of 40 RPM but device had correct values.

Any chance you would mind expanding on what some of the differences are?
Maybe like a Pro & Con of the 2 in your opinion? If anyone else cares to comment on this I would be very interested in getting a consensus. Ty!

First thing I noticed and like the best with FSX Play is how they render elevation change of the terrain.
With TGC, E6 and FSX2020 it was not often clear to me if I was hitting up hill or down hill. I always looked at the numbers.
With FSX Play, I can "feel" the up and down hill.

Can the guys that have it dowloaded keep a list going of the courses available. So far I have seen in this thread.

              Torrey Pines
              Linfield

Grunter4...Can I ask are you running your 1070 at Full Graphics and are happy with the result. I have a 1080 and would like to know what to expect.
Some of the cards being mentioned to get the 4K running well are pretty expensive...£1200.00 here in the UK. I don't need 4k yet ,but to upgrade card and projector is a significant upgrade cost.

I may hold off until we get some idea of when added functionality will arrive, I like my cheap swing cams , would not want to upgrade and not be able to use those , same goes for my club data playback. As someone who does not have LaJolla the deal does not seem too bad , but I sympathise with the guys that bought that recently. Foresight should make it right for those guys, from memory that course was $500.

I think a desktop GTX1080 would be great for 1920x1080. Not sure about laptop GTX1080(should be good enough). My GTX1070 is in a Zotec ZBox mini computer but is supposed to be a full 1070. I don't feel the need to upgrade for 1920x1080. I think FSX Play(Unity Engine) is much better optimized than FSX2020. I tried running FSX2020 on a Hades Canyon NUC(unsupported AMD graphics ~= GTX 1060). It sucked. While I was fighting to get my 1070 system activated, I ran FSX Play on the Hades Canyon NUC. It ran way better than FSX2020 did. It was playable at balanced and performance 1920x1080.

Ok have a little time on FSX Play now. First thing…I have a desktop with Intel 11600KF processor, nVidia RTX 3060 graphics card, 16gb ram. I thought this was a decent enough setup. I get 40-60 fps in 4k on FSX 2020 on full graphics. I’m getting 21 in FSX Play on full graphics, about 33 in the middle setting and 44 in the full performance setting. It’s pretty unplayable for me on full graphics. It runs fairly smooth on full performance though some holes and some flyovers drag down in the low 20s. It seems to depend on the background and how much detail it has. That said, the graphics are great. It’s so much easier to see elevation changes and the shading and detail seem so much more realistic. Love the upgrade of graphics but if I’m going to run it in 4k at full graphics I’ll probably need to upgrade to maybe a 3080 or something. I think it would need to be at least 33% faster at a minimum so a 3070 would be minimum.

Other things I like are the general layout though I’d like to have the tiles on the left vertically but they don’t bother me at the bottom. They go away on shorter shots on and around the green which is nice. They have a much better and more intuitive club selection. You can put in your clubs, add the loft and the distance you hit them and it will usually automatically select the correct club for the distance you selected or have left. I’ve played La Jolla(Torrey Pines), Butterfield Red/Green, and Pitch and Putt. They are all miles better graphically.

Some bad…the chase camera. I think it’s perfect in 2020. It’s just got a strange feel to it kind of like they made it different just to make it different. Along this line, the physics…the bounces and reactions on the green are unnatural. So much better in 2020. There are a lot of things that don’t seem to work yet like auto putt. Just gives me a one putt. No gripe it’s early yet and it typically only use it on Pitch and Putt. Some of the weather toggles don’t seem to do anything yet. The customization and data could be great in the future but not much doing right now.

All in all I’m conflicted on whether I should’ve purchased the upgrade. On the one hand the graphics are awesome and the interface is clean and neat but the options and customization aren’t really there yet. I think in the future it will be a great software if they develop it to have more of the physics and options of 2020 with the graphics and clean interface of Play.

p3eps brings up some VERY valid points here! It kinda blowsy mind that they have no issue releasing such an unfinished product without giving it away... They essentially are changing people $500 to do the beta testing for them!

In their defense, their software developers used to be overseas and then they brought it in house and tried to work with a program they didn't make (my understanding). There were also a ton of issues they tried to fix but were unable, like the disappearing hole (or at least I'm assuming they couldn't fix, since I worked with them for like 2 years on it and it never went away, including sending logs when it happened..., but I eventually stopped sending because it seemed like it was a waste of time)...

Anyway, This is their program (again, my understanding), also, they are now owned by a larger company, so hopeful some processes change...

I totally agree that this could be a repeat scenario, but it is a significantly better start with THIS than what we got from 2020 when it started.

And as far as the $500 for beta testing, yeah, funny and I totally agree but genius from a business perspective. Look how much they made and look how many tried to get in and couldn't. If they do it right, and use that money to fund improvements and processes and prioritize to make sure they address issues, then it can be great. No, it's not there, but I'm hopeful.

You could be right. I’ve only had FSX 2020 for a couple months. It’s definitely lacking in some areas but the data and physics seem pretty good. As far as future development for FSX Play they could certainly just put out a product that’s “good enough” I guess I’m holding out hope that all the influx of people using GC3 and Launch Pro along with the purchase by vista outdoor they would have the resources and foresight to see the opportunity they have to make a great product. We’ll see I guess…

Not sure how well it shows up in pictures but in person the difference is so much better. Like Grunter4 mentioned the elevation is just so much more obvious when you include shadows and whatnot.
