Brand New GC2 off by 20-25% - Advice?

    I have an older unit currently running 4.0.0.15. There is no difference in ball flight/distance calculations from all the other 3.x firmware I have ever had on my on my GC2

    With respect to ball dimples being different on modern balls, this is a non starter. Ball dimple designs have been about the same forever despite what the ball manufacturers sales material says. As far as I know a GC2 uses ball dimples for spin measurements only. The measurement of launch angle, ball speed and azimuth do not require dimple analysis.

    I'd suggest those having a problem first reload the latest firmware from the download site provided by Foresight which is where I got my latest version. You can also go to any of the free ball ballistics programs like Trajectoware, Flightscope etc and plug in your ball speed, launch angle and spin number and compare their distance calculations with the GC2. They won't be exactly the same but as they say, close enough for government work.

        I went to the range today and I have to say the spin numbers looked right in line with what I would expect to see from ball flight. I did not hook any at the range and I did not see any crazy high side spin numbers either. I could not verify the yardage accurately although I feel it was really close to what it should have been. I guess at this point I have to consider that I have two different swings, although I have been hitting inside my building for a few months now. Hopefully my inside swing will change soon.

          Yah you are Mis-reading my post. I'm not saying the ball dimples are different. I'm saying that the internal components and coverings of the modern tour balls are different. They tend to have lower spin at faster speeds thus farther distance. My point is that gc2 has no idea what the components of he ball are. To prove this take a limited flight ball or even a synthetic foam ball (http://www.almostgolf.com) and hit off your gc2. I've done it and gotten ranges of 200 yards with one of the newer foam balls that has a similar look and dimple patten as a real ball. No way this ball can travel such a distance. The point being is the gc2 reads the spin off the ball and launch angle etc and calculates the distance. Thus on the course it would make sense that real tour level balls would travel 10 yards farther at faster speeds produced by long irons woods or drivers.

            Yes the gc2 has no idea what the internals of the ball are but It doesn't much matter how the ball is made. Whatever spin and speed results from the construction will be measured properly by the gc2. So if it has lower spin and higher speed as in your example then that will be correctly measured.

            This is a completely separate issue from the flight algorithm the gc2 uses to calculate the carry. It's actually not that the gc2 gets the spin or speed wrong but it may incorrectly calculate carry for certain combinations of spin and speed. If you suspect that is the case then enter the data into optimal flight and trajectory optimizer and compare results.

            The limited flight ball example doesn't work because they have completely different weights and sizes compared to an official ball. The gc2 assumes one is hitting an official, legal ball in its flight calculations.

              I think you do not fully understand how the flight algorithms work. They just start with the ball speed, launch angle, spin, azimuth, ball mass and size.. The last two have been limited by the USGA and R&A for a long time. From the time of ball clubface separation they then in small time slices continually compute the changes in the ball flight parameters i.e., new ball speed, spin, drag, lift from spin and vertical/horizontal position relative to the GC2.

              This continues until the vertical position value is zero at which point the horizontal distance from the GC2 is displayed as carry. The final spin and landing angle is used in simulation programs to guesstimate the roll. If you are playing a simulation the the computation for carry stops when the vertical distance is equal to the course elevation at the point of ball ground contact.

              None of this has anything to do with the ball being used IF it is of spec mass and circumference. Whether it initially spins more or less or has a faster ball speed off the clubface is accounted for in the initial measurements by the GC2 which are then used in the algorithm..

                JV17 Just got back from a mini vacation last night. Haven't called them yet, because I wanted to try the tilt calibration software. I'll post an update soon...

                  Ok... So I just re-installed the newest firmware (downloaded from Foresight). Additionally, I ran tilt calibration. Neither attempted "fix" worked.

                  I then took this unit into the garage and hit balls with my putter. I was getting launch angles anywhere from 2.5 degrees, up to a max of 30 degrees. If someone can shed light on how a putter can reach a launch angle of 30 degrees, I'm open ears... Oh, and before I forget.. My putter's back spin numbers ranged from 0.0, all the way to 9,000...

                  Just left a contact form with Foresight. I'm annoyed beyond belief. Hopefully they resolve this promptly.

                      UPDATE: Just got off the phone with Foresight. They read through this thread, and didn't even ask questions... Said without a doubt they want to see the unit, because my numbers seem near impossible with the clubs listed. They are sending me a replacement unit today (or soon), and ask that I put the old unit in the return box so there are no extended delays. I couldn't have asked for a better response...

                      My goal was to avoid bothering them with "stuff" that can be resolved via forums like this; through a community of people with similar goals/experiences/product use/etc. They apparently see the value in you guys as a GC2 community, because again -- the rep didn't question anything that was tried a hopeful remedy (my listed "fixes," and/or your collective subsequent advice).

                      This proves to me two things: 1) That these forums are an awesome source of advice/experience, and 2) that Foresight takes great pride in doing things the right way.

                      Though I am a little bummed out, I could not have asked for a more seamless process... Great customer service Foresight! Can't wait for the replacement unit!

                        It might be a good idea to record or even post the ser# of that unit so that if they do sell refurbished units and someone else gets that one and has the same problem then they will know why.

                          Good news and great customer service by Foresight. Yes this forum is very powerful and I am sure all simulator companies are reading and watching things very closely!
