I've found that although a ball on the laser dot works extremely reliably for anything other than short putts, short putts I have to bring the ball 1 - 1.5" closer to me. And that reads 100% of the time now.

Before I worked this out, I was chipping 6 footers just so they read. This dot position is of course controlled by what BadEddieKit suggested - SkyTrak height, as well as the tilt of the machine towards or away from the player - you may wish to check that if you haven't. I have found the bubble level way out in this regard.
