  • Protee vs Skytrak/Mevo +

All of the backorder issues and ridiculous prices of Skytrak made me think about protee. Can anyone help share pros and cons of each. It’ll be a pretty permanent set up. Any help/advice is appreciated!

Skytrak/Mevo+ one of their big selling points is portability...if this is a permanent set up, ProTee seems like a good option

The big one here is portability.
if you want head data to work on swing then the ProTee has that.
Cost also is something to consider.
The entry level component comes with TGC so is actually in some cases cheaper than Mevo plus and Skytrack!

With TGC they are not too far apart in cost.

Yes you need to build a stance platform to house Protee but this can cost no more than a good stance mat for a Skytrack or Mevo, all set ups will need a screen, laptop or PC to run software and projector if you want to project onto impact screen.

A TGC pack can be bought new for under 3000.00USD with software and head data so great value.

In terms of accuracy the system is pretty spot on with all the work done on its interface over the last 12 months

Any issues with grounding the club normally with the protee? Does it mess up the sensors?

I've had several golf simulators. That is P3proswing, Skytrak, ES16 and now a Protee. I thought all of them were good, but none were/are perfect. I liked all of them, but some more than others.

My golf game actually improved the most with the P3proswing, but I had it first. It had great club info, although often reasonable the ball flight left a lot to be desired.

I had a Skytrak early on and it had issues with horizontal launch angles, ball flight, driver distances and the short game was not the best. I still thought is was great for the price they were asking and most of the issues I had with it have been addressed in updates.

For me the ES16 worked well. The spin rates, club distances and ball flights were reasonable and similar to that I got from Flightscope sessions. Club data was quite good. Horizontal launch angle was not the best. It had a major issue with heavy/fat shots. It either did not record them or the ball flight and distance was way off.

I now have a Protee, although it has the older cameras. Compared to my Flightscope numbers, from driver to 9 iron most of the data seems reasonable. The exceptions are spin and sometimes smash factor and of course along with that, I think, swing speed instead of ball speed. For me, the spin for those clubs is about 10% to 15% high. When I see a smash factor for a 6 iron of 1.48, I do tend to be a bit skeptical. Swing speed tends to be a bit lower in those cases, but carry distance is still about right. For my wedges, that is loft through gap, the spin is 10% to 15% low. Interesting enough the spin for my wedge is just about right. I have to adjust the distances for all my wedges down by increasing the drag from 2 to 5%. So, it appears to me one has to know ones distances. I can't hit a club with a launch angle of a bit over 30 degrees or higher because of misreads. For some reason these shots go way long. I typically have 3 to 4 misreads per round. Even though I have good ball streaks in the horizontal and vertical cameras, shots go way off line when those misreads happen.

Having written all of that, I like the Protee. I like the data and sim experience that Protee provides. Heavy or fat shots are very well simulated, so to me there is no issue grounding the club and the sensor is very durable. I've had friends over to play, or did before distancing came into style, and we had a great time playing the various courses in TGC 2019. To the person they all thought the ball data, club data and ball flights were very reasonable.

          Good luck with your selection.

Make sure you are using latest interface versions.
my numbers are pretty much bang on with no adjustments. Very close with Flightscope actually.
There can be a bit of variation in spin but not a lot so the system actually calculates it very well. I would say the variation is no more than you would see between other LM product.

They key is just having a good set up.

Some of the ones I have seen have been cobbled together second hand cams replaced with non recommended, lighting incorrect etc.

              Stonebattle,
shots over 30 degrees are fine, I can hit flops launching at 53 degrees.
The new interface corrects an issue some had of club head passing ball track first which in itself was not the issue but more so how the data was processed.

Get in touch and I will add the newest interface version we have worked on.

Adding the hcam will also help.

In interface select use vcam for spin and you will see the spin numbers change.

The spin numbers without this are based on a default loft value.

This was for users who had no cameras.
There are still some out there who use it with no cameras still.

I have a Hcam. It is an older one, which I think you know. Actually I think the C922 I was using before worked better, I had less misreads with it. This one has a blurry image often, changes settings from one time to the next, has a double image I have to correct often and has misreads even on well struck shots.

I have tried to use the Vcam for ball spin. I have not taken data, but the selection seems better for lower lofted irons, but readings are to low for wedges.

We have tried to get my high launch angle shots to work before, and that wasn't successful.

Your support is the best for sure, still I will wait until the new interface is released.

                  Correct,
You did get the point grey camera. If the image on it is a bit blurry try turning the lens to focus it more. Make sure the settings are saved in the flycapture software. C922 may have been a better camera but you cant run 2 different types without potential issue. We use new cams now which never change settings and are much much better.
You may need a little more set up work if the images on the hcam are missing at times. In settings file make sure avange on the hcam is set to true along with the vcam.
The new interface is available, so if you want to set up a time to get this on and look at some shots let me know

Sure, I will be glad to give it a try. I will give it a try if you want to send it to me. No I do not want to set up a remote session. I have gone into the flycap software many times and made adjustments. The Hcam or the Vcam will not maintain those settings from one time to the next.

You can install 3.17a from the Protee support site.
Without remotely logging in, I can't help you much with it.
It should go straight over the last interface if 3.16p or later, if going over earlier than a cleans install is required.
Set min launch for chipping to 28 to start with in settings file.

Using avange to true in the settings file and having all cam modes to pt4 should be fine, usual bit of tuning with the gain and exposure on the point grey cams in camera devices until the ball streak is solid

One thing to consider is your space and usability. If your space has an A-frame and would require lefties and righties hit from a different spot, ProTee would not work. So, if opposite-handed players will be crowded by your space, ProTee may not be the best bet. ST or mevo+ can accommodate that since they are movable .

Stonebattle with pointgrey you need to save the settings into memory channel 1. This will store your settings into camera memory and will be used on camera power-on.

The only issue the Pointgrey cameras have is it will up 1 or 2 frames everytime you initialize the cameras. This only happens when you click preview in the V-Cam screen, it will go from 40fps to 42fps.

When rebooted it will be back at 40fps. This is the main reason we switched camera brand. You settings will stay when saved into memory channel 1.

I very much appreciate the response Protee. I have tried the above, at least a dozen times, but both the Vcam and Hcam settings still change from one time to the next and do not return to those I set and save.

I just reset them each time now. The focus issue with the Hcam is strange and seems uncontrollable.
