Another Garage build - Sportscreen/Carl's preferred screen

Thanks everyone who shared their builds/ideas. This definitely helped get my garage build to where it is today. So hopefully what I shared here will also help someone.

    Components
    1. 16ft Sportscreen manual – I actually ordered the power conversion kit but Sportscreen shipped me the manual one by mistake. I installed my set up already and didn’t want to have to redo my install so I decided to cancel the power conversion kit order. I got these components at Homedepot to attach to my drill and worked quite well to power the screen up ad down.
    2. Carl’s custom preferred screen 187x132 inch with 15 inch vinyl flap on the top and side vinyl finish. - I probably won’t get with the side vinyl next time. The side vinyl makes the side thicker and caused wrinkle to the impact screen when it is rolled up. I fasten the screen using Velcro and bungy code ball. This was sturdy enough to keep the screen in place. The picture quality is decent enough even with the wrinkle and I don’t think this will bother me much during simulator play. However, this bothered me when I use the screen to watch TV. So I’m thinking to add another projector screen to the roller and flip it to the front when I watch TV. I’m still thinking of ways to leave gap when this TV projector screen in rolled down in the back while I hit balls to the front impact screen. I’m not sure how long the TV projector screen will last if I just leave it to the back with no gap. Has anyone done this?
    3. Golf mat Wittek Quattro mat - I have not tried other golf mats beside those in real driving range, but I’m happy with the purchase. It is sturdy enough and not to heavy for me to move it around. I also just use Velcro to strap it to the floor and limit its movement when I hit. This also seems to work well enough once you get the angle right.
    4. Projector BenQ TH671ST
    5. Launch monitor Mevo+. – I should be getting this in 2-3 weeks. Hope this will work with my set up. I’m hitting to the garage door and it seems some may have issues with interference. I added insulator foam to shield the garage door to keep temp in check and hope that will also help.
    6. Floor, side and ceiling protection. I don’t have ceiling or side protection installed yet. There were 2 balls (out of >1000s) so far where I hit to the screen 2 feet off the ground and somehow it bounced off upward to the ceiling. Other than that all the balls tend to just fall down on the yoga mats I have under neat the screen. With the set up I have it’s impossible to keep it super clean. I use new balls and clean my clubs every time I hit, but it still leave ball marks on the screen.

Very nice! I'm going with a similar set-up. I placed my Mevo+ order in July, so I won't receive it until November most likely, but I will be ordering the SportScreen and the rest of the items soon. This week and electrician will add a second outlet and I will install a direct drive garage opener as well.

I have a couple of questions:

-If the stealth screen is 16'x10' why did you order the Carl's screen at 187x132cm? Also, is the Velcro attached at specific locations on the SportScreen?
    - I can save several hundred bucks by going manual and don't mind using an adapter for my drill like you, could you share what the kit/components you bought at Home Depot to do this?

    Thanks!

I ordered mine from Shop Indoor Golf. I was looking for a vendor that accepted Klarna or Affirm for payment options as I wanted to finance it at 0% or low APR (OAC) for 18+ months. Also, with the 14wk average wait time on units, I didn't want to pay cash upfront without the unit. Klarna won't actually charge me until the unit ships.

Great, appreciate the feedback! Out of curiosity, did it actually take 14 weeks to get your Mevo+ or did it come sooner than that?

Is there a reason you are hitting towards the door rather than the back wall?

Instead of using the manual hand crank to roll the screen up/down, he's assembled a kit to use a drill as the powered motor to roll it up.

I got the Preferred Carl's screen at 187x120 inch and added 15 inch of vinyl flap on top with Velcro loop side sewn to the top vinyl flap. My sportscreen came with the hook velcro taped on. I want the extra length on the top so the screen got a chance to roll through the roller so it is not simply hung by the velcro. As for the adaptor to attach to the drill, you will need four things 1) 2ft threaded rod (I believe it's 3/8) 2) a coupler 3) 3/8 hook 4) lock nuts (or the whole thing will come apart). I would just take the picture to home depot.

It just fit better for my garage set up going this direction. The back wall has some cabinets which needed more clearance when the cabinet doors are opened. Now if the garage door becomes a problem with Mevo+, I may have to move it to the back wall or go with other launch monitor. My Mevo+ should ship next week.

You can go much cheaper on this and less complex... Just get a steel rod from home depot that is of sufficient length and then just put the end in a vice and bend it into a hook... Cheap easy and no issues and probably half the cost of an adapter with a hook and threaded rod.

I second SkeetShooter's recommendation of bending a rod in a vise. It has worked great and a picture of mine is attached.

I appreciate the response, and pictures of the drill adapter!

I just placed my order for the SportScreen and was looking at Carl's website to order the impact screen, but I am confused on how to select the Velcro attachments to fit the SportScreen. I do not see the drop downs for all the options you mention. On your Preferred Carl's screen, did you go 120" + 15" vinyl or 120" total (which would make screen 105" + 15" vinyl). Is your ceiling height 9' or 10'?

                  Thanks again!

I made a custom order and contacted Carl's for a specific quote. I have a 9.5ft ceiling and I think the max height for the screen was 10ft. I just wasn't sure if I had enough screen height to velcro and roll the screen (or vinyl flap)at least a revolution so it can be hung securely not by just the velcro. So my overall height was 120" + 15" vinyl on the top. This may be overkill on my part. The Velcro was also sewn on the vinyl top flap. I specified the loop side to be sewn on the screen. Joe at Carl's put together a work order that has all the specifics. I emailed Sportscreen and asked for the hook side to be tape on the roller. Vinyl on top and bottom should be fine but along the side make it hard to roll up the screen and not leave wrinkle.

Thanks again for your response. My ceiling height is 9'4", but I read the SportScreen bracket is 4" thus making my effective "screen height" 9'. You mention the 120" length + 15" vinyl may have been overkill on your part. Now that you've had it, do you think that the standard 9' screen + 15" vinyl is enough to secure it to the frame? In addition to the Velcro on the roller, is there additional Velcro on the SportScreen as well?

I'll contact Joe at Car'ls to see if he remembers the specifics of your order, such as where the Velcro was sewn on the vinyl (2" from edge, etc) if by any chance you still have the work order/email and if you can share it that would be awesome.

With your ceiling height at 9'4", I think 9' screen +15" vinyl should be good. Again, don't put any vinyl on the sides. The vinyl on the sides make the side thicker and make it hard to keep the screen flat without wrinkle when rolled up.

There is also velcro on the sportscreen. I velcro the sportscreen to the top flap vinyl. I let the sportscreen hang about 6" longer than Carl's screen.

Here are some more pictures and also the work order that was written up for Carl's screen.

Nice set up and thanks for the detail. In the last picture, what sort of light do you have over the hitting area?. It looks like a good way of not having too much light hit the screen
