To be real or not to be real?

I'm glad to see a lot of discussion about distances with OptiShot. From Day1 I have been posting that I have all my distances tuned down to 92% and posted on numerous occasions that I wish that everyone else would follow suit and tweak their Optishot to their realistic speeds/distances. So glad to see this discussion.

I have a SkyTrak and have done plenty of testing compared to OptiShot. Bottom line OptiShot is not very accurate with Driver, Woods, Hybrids. The swing speed is about 5 to 8 MPH higher than it should be. Also the distances are ridiculously longer. However the irons read a lot closer real swing speed but again the distances were still too long.

Because of limitations in the software this is something very difficult for the board to monitor. This whole discussion comes down to honesty. I have been honest this whole time and have been playing at 92% every tournament.

A lot of people don't really know there Driver swing speed. Everyone the answer is simple. Go to your local golf shop and get your driver swing speed evaluated. And not how fast can you swing the club, but truely your swing speed when you are hitting a true golf shot where you are trying to control accuracy.

Then like it was mentioned earlier, calculate the 2.47 x your driver swing speed. This will give you very close to real results. Then tweak your Driver Distance setting to meet the driver distance you just calculated. Some may be at 93% and some may be at 87%.

Like I've stated, I've had my settings like this the whole time. It really makes playing Optishot so much more fun because its very real. Previously I've done rounds set to 100% and I don't like it because its so fake!

So I challenge everyone to go to their local golf shop and get a true evaluation of your golf swing. We all know OptiShot isn't correct and that's why the provide the means to tweak and adjust your speed and distances.

I would like the board to consider having All Future Tournaments set to only Medium and Medium Fast greens. I think everyone has agreed that Slow and Fast are very unrealistic. I think we will get a better turn out of consistency if we keep it at Medium and Medium Fast. Most tournaments would have very close green speeds throughout the entire tournament and not drastically changing like our tournaments. Please discuss this among the board.

Hey Boys, I reduced my distance settings from 97%to 92% on my driver and my 3w and 5w from 100% to 95% and shot 70 in my second round. It was much more realistic. Is 12mph really a two club wind ? Here are a few samples of DD's calculations for swing speed : total distance. With 97% and 92%

Tryied the speed at 92% this Morning. Sample size was 15 shots. Disregarded 2 misreads (96mph and 101 mph) by optishot. The rest I got to Opti avg 117,3 golf sense avg 118,4. Decided to go with 93% which would mathemetically result in 118,5 for opti.

Distances were noticably shorter and the avg was (no misreads in the avg) 290,6. Previously my stats avg for 268 driver shots on opti was 306. This includes quite a few 2yd drives (putting with driver slected etc.) and a whole lot of misreads so the math sounds Ok to me. All in all this accuracy is good enough for me for now and this is also how I'm going to be playing from now on.

Didn't have time to fiddle with the lighting yet but I'll try and have a look at that at the weekend.

EDIT: Had a look at maxx'es numbers @ 92% distance and something still doesn't add up when it comes to distance generated with specific swing speed...... could be loft, shaft lenght, shot hight or any other variable. I'll have a look at that at the weekend too.

Maxx: could you please post what you have as your driver specs: shaft length, loft, shot type (high, normal, low?) and reconfirm that you are now at 92% distance and 100% speed. and please also confirm that those pics are taken after you were at 92% distance... I'm By no means questioning your numbers... I just want to understand them... (and most of all I want be sure I understand my own numbers)...

Ive predicted they will be longer than the rest of golfers in the world and also longer than the owners of more accurate simulators on here. Not because i believe optishot users truely are better players but because golfers (mens) perception of their average is not the reality. And this is why i believe we cant allow users to pick their own averages and tweak settings to match these perceived averages and the reason why i favour the same settings for all, that and the simplicity.

My gut feeling for these. I've always played more by feel than the numbers but sure... I have some sort of idea.

If I had to put a number in flat calm conditions hitting a proper (non range) ball to each they would be as follows:

D TM RBZ2 @ xstiff @ 8,5deg @ 46" : 240-270m (there is a lot of variance here. I dont think anyone has an exact number for a drive in the same way as they might have for a 9 iron)

I'm actually playing a stiff shaft on it at the moment as my usual shaft is on loan to a friend who is playing in Florida at the moment. I have his stock shaft screwd on at the moment.

My latest official hcp of 2.2 does not yet qualify me to give a solid down to the yard estimate.

I'm also sorry that I inconvinienced you with my metrics. I live in one of the 193 countries that use the metric system and not in one of the 3 ( Burma, Liberia and USA ) that don't.
I'm just going to leave the irons in there as someone else might or might not be interested in them.

And yes this answer was written is a slightly irritated state of mind as I feel that I should be free to express my answer in the way I feel most comfortable doing it.

Dont use any woods other than driver, from that just drop down to a 3hybrid due to 14 club rule and carry lots of wedges

Total yardage for x2 hot 19 deg stiff - 215 (If Carry only then 195)

I've spent a lot of time over there though and I know all well that the reality for everyday life is still very much non metric... And i'll also hand it to you that golf is very much yds in lot's of countries.

There IS a lot of variance for the drives for everyone. I firmly stand behind this opinion. Roll can easily be 10%. So we need to know what kind of roll we are getting to actually make some sort of estimate. In the spring when the snow has just melted the ball will plug in most of my drives and 240m/265yd is a good solid drive. In the heart of summer we can get 30yd roll easy. Even 50 yds is not un heard of. This is not the case with a 9iron...

274y / 103 mph = 2.66
269y / 101 mph = 2.66

From my early calcs of ball speed x smash factor x roll out % I think the ratio should be around 2.5 max so think these readings still show that distances still too far for the swing speeds acheived.

Hogan your 90% distance ratio may well be spot on after all this

Ill get on now and have a few hits and post my results, but definitely think were nearly there now with regards a setting for the distance % that can be applied across all sims. It will then be up to indivduals to be honest about if their swing speed reads correctly I guess
