To be real or not to be real?

I don't mean to throw another wrench in to the mix but does OptiShot use the same calculations "off line" on the driving range and "on line on the course"? The obvious answer would seem yes, but I am noticing a difference. Hitting a real ball with SS set at 100% and distance to 90% I am hitting about right on the driving range with a 270 total and a SS of 108. However when I go to the course I am only showing a 250 total drive with similar swing speeds.

Before we invest any more time in this we may want to verify the range and course are the same or different and proceed accordingly.

Just checked this through. Course looks spot on in line with range. Constant ratios from 2.46 - 2.48. Looking good. No notable difference between 89% distance and 90% so guess that 1% fall within the margin of error

Check to see if your environmental conditions are exactly the same for range and golf course including the same direction of shot on the golf course that matches the range in case you have wind influencing the shots differently.

Sorry guys. i'm too busy and tired this weekend to do anymore testing. But if you do need more tests done with the golf sense then pm them to me and I'll try and get them done on Monday.

From testing with Buckeye Im 100% ready to call the real ball stock turf setting at 100% Speed, 90% distance. 89% does throw the odd 2.39 ratio, whereas 90% seems to be 2.46 to 2.51 more consistently

I have also been testing with IAN. HOGGARD who hits no ball and found that remarkably the 100% Speed 90% Distance also throws 2.47 average ratio there too So Unless anyone else want to investigate that further think hes the only one hitting that setup at the moment so happy to go with that.

Need one more tester to just confirm the 89S 89D / 90 90 D / for foam stock turf and if all ok on course will be happy to call that one too.

PSgolfer is to test Real Ball Thick turf setting, again think hes only one with that setting so will tune setting from him on that one

Catman is finalising the Height restricted 3 wood as driver setup, and once thats confirmed I personally believe well be in a position to call these settings

3 wood and 5 wood general settings are proving a mystery, so need to decide if we want these fixed or user allowable like irons, but with certain caps etc etc

Played at 89 speed 100 distance with woods today's comp round with almost golf. The distances were pretty much what I would expect to see on the course. Taking an extra 11% off would feel pretty short to me. Just my gut feeling... Speed was probably averaging ok with gs but was seldom close. It was all over the place but averaging ok. Pretty irritating though... Had a 126mph @ 89% fly way over the green at one of the short par 4s... Anyway... Good work from all the past 20 pages of the thread.

6. If using a 3 wood instead of Driver due to Height Restrictions add 9% to the SPEED % setting relating to your ball and turf configuration above... I tested this OK, Catman to confirm

7. Everything other than Driver must be set to real world distances varying speed and distance settings accordingly, however 3 wood and 5 wood must not exceed Speed % relative to your own personal ball and turf setup, but Distance settings may be up to MAX 100% Distance Setting. All other irons must be set to real world distances

8. Any individual Driver, 3 or 5 wood settings may be adjusted to a different % ONLY if evidence from an external device, ie TRACKMAN/GC2/FLIGHTSCOPE etc can prove without doubt that a persons Swing Speed/Distance is not being accurately read by Optishot and an adjustment away from the settings above is required. This change would need to be approved by the Board on a case by case basis

9. All Players must record there rounds and if requested make them available for review by the Board. Anyone found in breach of the above settings or using settings for any club to falsely significantly improve their ability or gameplay (ie, hitting a PW 250 yards) shall be removed from the tournament and face further action as the Board do see fit.


Would appreciate your feed back on this, if you don't object then don't moan if this ever ends up as a rule Please remember though that these are always going to be a bit of a compromise but the aim ultimately is to bring a bit more realism to this SIM. We all know theire are limitations with the machine, and the software but the above settings at least will make things a bit better surely and contribute to a stronger, fairer league. Couple this with the change to the leaderboard setup I posted in another thread and I think we will see a massive improvement overall

So here's the issue that I'm having with those numbers. Tried the settings for real ball of 100/90 and I'm getting a swing speed of around 112 and ball distance of 275. IRl my swing speed is 116-124 with distance of 285. So it's a little off. But I didn't some tinkering and if I set it at 105/90 I Achieve those settings. IRl. So I know we can't go over 100 but I refuse to be shorter then I really am but wait.

When using foam ball with 90/90 settings I'm swinging 115 avg with a 280 drive. Which I could live with. But I'm not going to ever hit a foam ball ever. That's my opinion.

So tomorrow I'm heading over to the HD simulator and hopefully I don't forget to record my swing so I can set my settings to IRl after showing the proof.

No ball #'s are WAY off for me. Had my 160 8-iron @ 120. All Speeds would have to be set @ 115 and up. Some quite high.

Check to make sure that the HD simulator is not boosted.

I would only trust TM/FS or GC2. Even the Foresight software was shown to have had boost.

Willy you might be wasting your time... I have been there and done it (trusted commercial sims). Note that most commercial sim owners jack the sim up to encourage people to walk into the place. No one likes to know that in reality they swing under 100mph.

Only rely on Trackman or Flightscope for real swing speeds and carry.

I have used Protee and Trugolf at commercial places and have seen them jacked up intentionally. Not trying to bash their setup, maybe their HD golf set up its quite good, but be careful in just blindly trusting it.

Maybe someone else has compared HD against Trackman or Flightscope in neutral conditions that can chime in if the data will be helpful to you guys. Just make sure they haven't boosted it. I also have seen club fitters boost their GC2s just to sell new clubs....
