  • New Skytrak problems

I just got my new Skytrak yesterday as I'm planning on building a sim at home. I set it up today to make sure everything is ok with the unit in case it needs returned. I have been testing the unit for the past hour, chipping off carpet in the spare room. I'm shocked to discover that the unit is only picking up about 3 of every 20 strikes. I have tried both my samsung galaxy s8 and pc. I have tried both direct and network connection. I am using a new ball.
Are there any fixes in the pipeline for this as £1850 is a lot of money, if not, I will be returning asap as the device in its current state doesn't seem to function properly.
    edit:
I have now setup some fabric so i can strike the ball a little harder and the skytrak is picking up most of the shots now.
So does the skytrak not register little delicate chips eg edge of green etc. I have tried different ball positions with no success.
Also how does putting work, is there a separate mode for this as virtually no putts were registering for me.

One more thing. I only received my skytrak yesterday and I'm supposed to have a 30 day trial period but in the app it says I have only 15 days left. I'm worried now somebody might have previously returned this unit.

id assume that short chips (15 yards and less) are hard to register. i have never tried those shots nor putting on the actual skytrak software itself. i do have also TGC and for chips and putts they have a special 'putting mode' the software goes in to that does something with the skytrak info that is sent to be able to read those delicate shots. So i would say (and this is clear assuming from those previous said results) the skytrak software itself doesnt have this type of mode so it doesnt read short shots nor does it have a putting green to practice on using the skytrak software.

Please see this post below for Skytrak tips and tricks. I don't think there is anything wrong with the unit. It's most likely your setup. I have been using it for just under a month and once I got a Fiberbuilt hitting mat, I started to get good numbers. I also took the unit to a indoor golf shop twice. Incredibly accurate results. My home lighting is not the best, I do believe that's where I may be losing few yards. But mat makes the biggest difference IMHO.

Hey all, With all the bad press around Skytrak with its sim integration problem/sync issues with the pga show this year I wanted to write a post/ turn it positive

When I first got my SkyTrak I also tested it out doing little chips off the carpeted floor. Sounds like I had a similar experience with the unit only picking up 3 out of every 20 shots. It was very frustrating and I thought the unit was defective. After spending more time testing it off my green hitting mat it picked up all the shots. The reason for the no reads was the carpet color, it was not green. I also had issues with no reads when using clubs with white graphite shafts.

Try hitting off a grass color green surface and you should have no issues with full shots, chips, or putts.

Yeah I wouldn't take it back yet. I think it is your set up and the shots you are hitting that is causing this.

Thanks everyone for your input. Any advice on why my unit only has 15 days left of free trial. Its supposed to be 30 days and i only received the unit yesterday. That's where my initial worry started as I was afraid I had been sent a defective previously returned unit.

Can't offer advice about the 15 days versus 30 days. you might need to call SkyTrak about that.

I will say that SkyTrak needs to have proper conditions for reading shots. I had issues with making sure the SkyTrak didn't have a background issue (My hitting area is in the garage and the reflection or color of my car causes mis-reads), correct height, and correct light. Once I adjusted all those items, I rarely have misreads.

I personally don't see the value in putting on a simulator, so I never use it for that. I do practice pitching and that works great. Not sure about chipping, since again I am not sure of the value in a simulator.

I could not agree more. Proper Mat, Background, Height, Light and I would add alignment are critical to SkyTrak. I wish we know the exact picture area it is snapping so that we can make sure it is covered with dark material. I am hitting in my living room and there is a door behind me. I don't have anything reflective behind me but I am not sure if that is a problem or not. I tried putting a dark bed cover right behind me but it did not make a lot of difference. Per folks here I put my ST little less than .5" above my FiberBuilt mat ($ 399). I have a single 90 Watt Halogen bulb right above the ST (~ 4' above). I plan to put couple more Halogen in the room to light it up pretty good, I will make sure no direct light into ST.

I took this device to GolfTec/GolfGalaxy store twice and it worked like a charm. Their room is very well lit, beige color background, very good quality mat. So I think as long as you don't have anything really shiny, background should be no issue. Proper lighting, good quality mat and Height/Alignment are key.

I agree with everything you say, except light. Indoor lighting (or lack thereof) should have no impact on ST.

I did the exact thing, started with chipping. It rarely read and i was convinced I had a bum unit. The problem was beige carpet. Mine turned out to be very accurate once I set it up properly.

                  HI

There is NOTHING WRONG with your skytrak, you are only just starting to learn what can and can't be done with the unit.

The skytrak software doesnt currently support chipping under 10 yards or something, but the next software update is supposed to do something about that according to skytrak seth.

Skytrak does read soft chips etc and putts but you need the software, etc TGC JNPG CG3D Fitness golf WGT etc.......... the software puts skytrak into a PUTTING/CHIPPING mode automatically for short distances, THIS NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE on skytrak range software.

Your 15 or 30 day free trial is irrelevant, just go to the skytrak store on the skytrak website and choose the BASIC Skytrak PACKAGE and pay ZERO. Your skygolf account will then link and sync your skytrak with the free basic driving range package and you are ready to go. You can go back to the skytrak store and upgrade to the game improvement package or play and improve package at anytime, once you pay the subscription fee your sky golf account will sync with your skytrak and you are ready to go.

You must go through the skytrak store even with the FREE basic driving range package to sync your skytrak account with your skytrak, if you dont you will get renewal pop ups and the unit will do strange things like be very slow etc......

Get your skytrak account setup and subscription package selected to sync your unit FIRST then you can start to use it and mess around with it.

Check the forum about subscriptions etc...........asap.

Do you have a source on that next software update that Seth mentioned? Also in something like TGC if I want to hit like a 5 yard chip from the fringe with a lob wedge, should I have it on putting mode or the normal clubs? Thanks!

changing which club you actually are using doesnt affect anything, you can use putter off the tee if you really want to. the regular mode vs chipping/putting mode is it changes some spin settings. TGC will suggest lob wedge and chip or 9i and chip and it will put it automatically in putting/chipping mode for you .

go to CHIPPING PRACTICE SKYTRAK thread, Seth makes a comment about the next release taking a big step in that direction.

Advice to GM23 is to persevere persevere persevere. Many forum members have had initial problems including me, but by experimentation and helpful forum advice I sorted everything out. Skytrak is a super device and I love mine dearly (I am close to logging 5,000 shots with mine now) but because the technology is pretty leading edge it's not really !00% out of the box functional. If I buy a new microwave I expect it to work 100% first time every time and never go wrong - but ST is not like that.

It's like buying a new cricket bat - if you want it to score 1000s of runs for you then you have to give it some love and attention until all its little wrinkles are smoothed out and it's a happy little Skytrak......

Set it up today in the garage with a hitting mat and net. Only misread around 4 of roughly 100 shots so working like a dream now, I wish i could say the same for my swing lol which needs a lot of work.
The only annoying thing is that of the 4 misreads, 2 were probably my best strikes of the session.

You have to pay attention, sometimes if you waggle the light will go out and you have to wait for the laser to re-appear. It leads some to believe it missed a shot when in actuality, the unit was not armed to read a shot. If the ball is not sitting directly on the laser dot, it's easier to notice.

You Could add an Rmotion to your set up which will deal with chipping and putting and add club head data to your skytrack set up.
For full head data and chpping putting the Protee system is a little more expensive but you can play any shot.
Rmotion and skytrack work very nicely together and do a great job of the shorter shots

Be cautious with trying the R-motion, I returned mine before a week due to it not working well and the customer service being absolutely atrocious.

I am sursprised to hear that as the Rmotion has worked very well with the Skytrack set up as long as you use the correct interface.
Did You contact ProTee? I would be interested to hear what you found atrocious
